Columbus Adventure With Peer Leader Group

For our group’s Columbus Adventure, we chose to go to the Chop Shop restaurant. Located on north high street, Chop Shop serves gourmet burgers, shakes and sides. When our group went, I ordered an original Chop Shop burger with a side of sweet potato fries. While eating, we each discussed about ourselves, we shared our hometowns, our favorite hobbies, our struggles with classes, and had a great time. Living in Drackket, right next to Scott Dining hall has in a way limited my dining experience on campus. I find myself eating at Scott almost exclusively during the week. After having explored a bit more of High street, I don’t think that this will be the case any longer. With so many new restaurants, I now want to keep exploring and eating at new locations. The extra time spent walking is definitely worth it. (Chop Shop’s sweet potato fries are much better than Scott’s.) There is no picture provided in this post because, sadly, our group forgot to take one while we were busy eating. I look forward to working with my group further and hope that some day, we will be able to go out and eat together again.

Columbus To Do List #2

Harvest Pizzeria

For my second experience from the Columbus To-Do List, I decided to go to Harvest Pizzeria with my sister and her friend. After reviewing the menu, I decided to order the white pizza with spinach, artichoke, and lots of mozzarella. My sister ended up getting the Hawaiian pizza with pineapple and pepperoni. The food was pricey, but it was definitely worth it. I’m glad that I know of a place near campus that has great house made pizza. I will be visiting Harvest Pizzeria again with my friends in family in the very near future.

Graeter’s Ice Cream

For my final exploring Columbus experience, I decided to visit the Graeters Ice Cream store near campus with my sister and my roomate, who is also in HES. Having grown up in Cincinnati, I was already very acquainted with Graeters Ice Cream. The two of us ordered our long-time favorite ice cream flavors. I got black raspberry chip and my sister got cookie dough. I had a great time eating Graeters with my sister. The ice cream reminded me of home. Although this experience was not entirely new to me, it was new to my roommate who was not from Cincinnati. I helped him pick out a good flavor and had a good time talking about Cincinnati and school with him. I had a great time going back to Graeters, it reminded me of home and made me pretty nostalgic. It had been a while since I had last had Graeters and I was glad to finally have some. I would recommend Greaters to any one of my friends at any time.

Overall, my favorite experience this semester was 16-Bit bar and arcade. I had a great time with my family playing arcade games.  I have learned that Columbus is a huge city that has a lot to offer, both in new experiences, such as 16-bit and familiar experiences such as Graeters. I Intend to explore even more of Columbus outside of this assignment. I plan on going to play some board games at the Columbus Area Board gaming Society. I recommend that for anyone new to or just visiting Columbus, that they jump into the many experiences and opportunities that Columbus has to offer right away. There is so much to do in Columbus and hesitation will only hold you back from experiencing great things.

Columbus To-Do List #1 – 16 Bit Bar and Arcade

This semester, I have chosen to complete activities in the “Sports and Games” category of Exploring Columbus. I am looking forward to going to a Columbus crew game, the Old North Arcade, and the Columbus Area Board-gaming Society. I hope that this assignment helps to introduce me to just some of the many activities in Columbus and helps me get to know some of my fellow HES students even better. Many of my friends and roommates have shown interest in the listed events and activities posted on the assignment. I’m looking forward to exploring Columbus with them.  One experience that I have had so far has been visiting the “16 Bit” bar and arcade. When my parents and younger brother came up to visit my sister and I at Ohio State, they took us there.

While we were there, we enjoyed appetizers and had a great time playing old arcade games. My father even set the temporary record in the “asteroids” arcade game that was there. Meanwhile, my brother and I enjoyed a competitions in Pac-Man, Dig-Dug, and Donkey Kong. Our experiences at the 16- Bit bar and arcade even influenced my brother and I to start planning a miniaturized build of an arcade cabinet using a “Raspberry Pi” microcomputer. For a video game enthusiast like myself, 16 Bit was truly an amazing experience. My parents got to play the games they grew up on as children and I got to learn new tricks from them. I would definitely recommend 16 Bit to my friends or to anyone interested in old fashioned arcade cabinet games. I’m looking forward to going back with my friends some time soon.

Running

When I started High School at Los Osos in California, I joined the Track and Cross Country team. In the team, I met a lot of my best friends. I talk to many of them to this day. I started running with my father for fun and as a hobby before high school and enjoyed running after school to stay active. I also enjoyed participating in competitions such as 5k events, 1600’s and 3200’s. Although tiring, running has always been my preferred choice of exercise. After a long run I find myself more relaxed and less stressed. I still run to this day and visit the North Rec Center at least once a week to run a couple of miles.

Moving to California

When I was in 7th grade, my family moved from Cincinnati Ohio to Rancho Cucamonga California. The move was a big change for me. I was scared about moving across the country, but was also excited. When I started 8th grade in California, I made many new friends. Some of these friends also attended Los Osos High School with me after I graduated 8th grade. After completing my sophomore year in high school, my family ended up moving back to Cincinnati.  Although I only lived in California for a couple of years, the connections I made while living there have had a lasting impact on my life and continue to shape my daily life.

About Me

Hi, my name is Scott Kiehl. I grew up in Cincinnati Ohio and attended St. Xavier high school before coming to Ohio State. I have two siblings, my sister Maddie and my brother Sam. At Ohio State, I am a member of the Humanitarian Scholars program and am currently working towards my intended major of Electrical Engineering. Engineering has always been a field that has fascinated me since I was a child. When I was little, I loved to build things out of legos. My interest has evolved as I have grown up. Now, I enjoy tinkering with computer components and building computers. I hope that with the solid foundation in engineering that Ohio State will provide me, I can use my knowledge to invent new solutions for problems and help people across the world. Outside of school, my interests include soccer, running, and video games. I also enjoy a hobby of building desktop computers and dabble in the art of raspberry pi programming. Before coming to OSU I worked for 2 years at a part time job at the restaurant Tom+Chee. While attending St. Xavier, I became much more interested in engineering after taking an engineering class in my Senior year. Another experience I enjoyed at St. Xavier was my role leading a service group that volunteered at a soup kitchen in Over the Rhine. My service experience was truly humbling and it was a major reason I chose to apply to humanitarian engineering. After I graduate, I do not simply want to utilize the lessons I learned at Ohio State for my own personal gain. I want to some day be able to solve major problems that others are facing and improve their lives as a result.

Top 5 Strengths-

  1. Analytical– I am constantly absorbing and interpreting information throughout my day. I tend to listen more than I speak. Additionally, I seek out facts before making decisions.
  2. Includer– I like to make everyone feel like they are a part of a team. When people are being left out, I think of how I would feel if I was the one being left out and attempt to get them involved.
  3. Relator– I like to work with others towards a common end goal. I enjoy associating with other people and like getting to know others and their individual strengths.
  4. Achiever-I like to push myself towards hard goals and challenge myself to learn new skills everyday. I like to chip away at hard assignments and projects and stay dedicated to the tasks while working on them.
  5. Arranger– I like to help others when they are facing challenges of their own. Oftentimes, I will put in extra work to correct both my own and others’ mistakes so that assignments are completed correctly.
