Catalan talks start with three hours of “therapy” about the origins of the crisis

On Wednesday, February 26th, a historic meeting occurred between the Spanish PM, Pedro Sanchez, and Catalan’s Premier, Quim Torra. The two met with the 15 other heads/representatives of Catalan and central governments throughout Spain, in order to reach common ground on the issues. The initial point of the meeting was to identify the origin of the conflict, and attempt to work it out from there. The talks themselves went very well, leaving everyone feeling good and at ease about the situation, despite the continuing differences between the two governments.

The Catalan government would like to have a government pardon for the separatist leaders found guilty of sedition last year, but the Spanish government is not moving from their position on this. To avoid any arguments in person, Sanchez decided to bring the 44 points that the Spanish government has drawn up in order to give Catalonia the autonomy they want. However, if the talks end up continuously diverting from the issues at hand, then there’s no telling where these talks are going to go. These negotiations aren’t reaching the full potential that the Catalonian government wants, but at the same time, they aren’t willing to compromise on many of the aspects that the Spanish government is offering them.
