Dr. Mahmood Khan

Principal Investigator

Dr. Khan is a Professor and Director of Basic and Transitional Science in the Department of Emergency Medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He has extensive training and experience across cardiovascular pharmacology, metabolism, physiology, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering, with 15+ years in cardiovascular disease research.

His long‑term interests center on identifying biomarkers and translating tissue‑engineered cardiac patches to patients with heart failure. He has published 80+ peer‑reviewed papers and eight textbook chapters, and serves as PI/Co‑I on NIH and extramural grants studying novel scaffolds and drug‑releasing nanoparticles for cardiac regeneration, wound healing, and angiogenesis. The lab also focuses on exosomes/extracellular vesicles for myocardial repair and biomarker discovery. Dr. Khan mentors undergraduate/graduate students and postdoctoral researchers toward impactful careers in research.

Dr. Divya Sridharan

Research Scientist

Dr. Sridharan specializes in differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into cardiovascular cell types. She holds a PhD in bioengineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and has prior experience differentiating mouse pluripotent stem cells to the cardiac lineage. Her current research focuses on differentiating human iPSCs to cardiovascular progenitors for myocardial regeneration. Outside the lab, she enjoys traveling, reading, and Indian classical dance.

Dr. Syed Baseeruddin Alvi

Postdoctoral Researcher

Dr. Alvi, from IIT‑Hyderabad, specializes in nanomedicine for theranostic applications. His PhD work focused on photothermal/photodynamic therapy for skin and breast cancer. In the lab, his research includes fabricating and testing novel drug‑releasing nanoparticles and hydrogels for cardiac repair post‑MI. He enjoys mountain biking in his free time.

Dr. Pankaj Singh Dholaniya

Postdoctoral Researcher

Dr. Dholaniya completed his PhD in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology at the University of Hyderabad. He specializes in computational biology and machine learning with a focus on neurobiology, brain disorders, and aging. His current work applies data‑driven approaches to cardiovascular disease to develop novel therapeutic insights. He practices Shotokan Karate and enjoys exploring new technologies.

Lab Manager

Muhamad holds a Master’s in Clinical Research and has been in Dr. Khan’s lab for six years, studying the effects of hypoxia on hiPSC‑cardiomyocyte maturation. Outside the lab, he enjoys photography, mountain biking, and breakfast at The Lox Bagel Shop in the Short North.

Research Assistant

Ayza graduated from Ohio State with a BS in Neuroscience and serves as the Noor Community Clinic undergraduate student coordinator. In the Khan Lab, she studies fibroblast activation and nanoparticle formulation. She aims to become a pediatrician and has experience as a PCA at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She enjoys volunteering with cats at the animal shelter and traveling.

Student Research Assistant

Omar is a Biomedical Engineering major at The Ohio State University with plans to pursue medical school. In the Khan Lab, he develops electrospun cardiac patches using biomaterials and conducts Python-based data analysis to evaluate cardiomyocyte behavior and recovery outcomes. Outside of research, Omar serves as a Patient Support Assistant at OhioHealth and enjoys wrestling.

Medical Student Researcher

Adel is a second‑year medical student at Marshall University. In the Khan Lab, he differentiates induced pluripotent stem cells into cardiomyocytes and combines them with fibroblasts and endothelial cells to form 3D cardiac organoids that resemble in vivo heart tissue. He plans to pursue an internal medicine residency followed by a cardiology fellowship. He enjoys playing soccer and working out.

Colette is a third‑year Honors Health Sciences major who hopes to attend medical school. Her research focuses on data analysis during cellular reprogramming of somatic cells into induced pluripotent stem cells and cardiomyocytes. She also plays on the Women’s Club Ice Hockey team and enjoys running marathons.

Rabiya is a second‑year Neuroscience major at Ohio State. Her research assesses treatment effects on cardiac remodeling following permanent‑ligation MI in mice. She performs cryosectioning, histological staining, and imaging to identify fibrotic tissue. She plans to attend medical school and enjoys pickleball and running.

Veronica is a third‑year Biomedical Physiology major at the University of Georgia. Her research investigates which isoforms of BK channels are present in extracellular vesicles. She plans to attend medical school and enjoys reading and playing sports.

Uzair Ahmed graduated with a degree in Neuroscience in 2025 and a minor in Global Public Health. He joined the lab in 2021, where he developed a broad range of scientific interests, primarily focusing on human‑induced pluripotent stem cell‑derived cardiomyocytes and modeling cardiac ischemia. He remains committed to pursuing medical school and a career as a physician. Outside of the lab, he was actively involved in BuckeyeThon and Philocracy, enjoyed playing soccer, and valued time with family and friends. He is now pursuing an MBA at the Fisher College of Business.

Syed Ashraf graduated in 2024 with a degree in Health Sciences from The Ohio State University. He plans to attend medical school and pursue a career as a physician. Outside the lab, he enjoyed photography, archery, and traveling to explore new places.

Ghazala Sameer is a second‑year Biomedical Engineering student and a member of BMES. She joined the lab to learn more about stem‑cell reprogramming and bioengineered materials with potential cardiology applications, while building research skills and problem‑solving approaches. She enjoys reading, working out (weightlifting/tennis/dance), volunteering, rock‑climbing, and go‑karting.

Student Research Assistant

Salmman Ahmed earned a BS in Biology from John Carroll University and is pursuing medical school at LECOM. He previously conducted research at Case Western Reserve University on proteins in mitochondrial fission and at John Carroll on synapse development in Drosophila. In Dr. Khan’s lab (Spring 2021), his work included immunostaining, nano/microparticles for cardiac repair post‑MI, and mouse echocardiography. He enjoys mentoring/teaching, fitness, theology books, and has a strong interest in cardiology.

Abbey is a second‑year Microbiology major in OSU’s combined BS/MS program. She plans to pursue a PhD and move somewhere warmer than Ohio. She joined the lab in January 2023 and looks forward to developing an independent project. On campus, she is active with the OSU Boxing Club and is a Group Fitness Instructor at the RPAC. In her free time, she enjoys her two yellow labs, reading, and working out.

Katie is a first‑year Biochemistry major with double minors in Spanish and Neuroscience. She is a member of MAPS and Phi Delta Epsilon, and a Morrill Scholar. She joined the lab to gain research skills and collaborate with the team. She aims to focus on neurosurgery and neurological diseases in the future and apply stem‑cell recovery insights to her work. She enjoys reading and discovering new music.
