Artifacts
The Ohio State University is a huge college with an amazing selection of student organizations and clubs to be a part of. I have already considered making my own club! Although it’s difficult to do so since there are so many clubs and organizations already on campus. I’ve joined the Big Data and Analytics Association to demonstrate my interest in my major and coding. I would love to participate in the Hackpalachia competition. I’ve also joined their Mentor program where they match upperclassmen with underclassmen to build connections where advice can be sought out. I also wanted to find an organization that aligns with my interests. So, during the Involvement Fair, I joined the Indian-American Association. At their meeting I was able to meet with students with the same interests and principles as me. It helped me gain a group of people who thought like me. It was like a place where I could always feel included. This also led to me meeting a lot of people from my neighborhood and community I knew from elementary, middle, and high school. Since I grew up in Dublin, Ohio, I met many old friends in similar academic fields as me. This helped me build a network easily of people with similar career goals. I’m excited for the events in the coming year (especially because I need somewhere to wear my traditional clothes). The Indian-American Association also has a similar mentor and mentee program as in Big Data and Analytics Association. It is called Big Sib/Little Sib (BSLS) and underclassmen and upperclassmen are paired up based on majors/interest/etc and they will be in a group of pair as a family. I’m trying to clear my schedule so that I can join in on the SSAS Benefit Dinner. The event starts at 6:30pm on September 13th, 2019 in the Biomedical Research Tower; all proceeds from this annual formal benefit dinner will go towards funding Pratham USA’s “Read India Program.” Pratham USA is one of India’s largest and most successful non-governmental education organizations. This organization focuses on innovative interventions to address disparities in South Asian education systems and promote literacy in impoverished regions of South Asia. Although it is not a student organization, I have also gotten a job at Mirror Lake Eatery as a Student Assistant. Dining Services at the Ohio State University makes the application process simple and fast. Due to my prior experience as a hostess, I already had a good understanding of what makes good customer service an integral part of a dining experience– not to mention, a campus dining experience at that. I believe that by mastering customer service early in my academic career, I will be well prepared for front-end customer service relations for any job ahead of me. I also like that my free time between classes is being used so that I can earn money to pay for my tuition, insurance, and meals. I believe having a basic part-time job teaches you humility and how to have grit.
About Me
My name is Vidhya Kewale and I am a freshman attending Ohio State University in order to earn a bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics. I am from Dublin, Ohio and am commuting to school. For my secondary education, I attended Dublin Jerome High School. I enjoy learning about statistics and artificial intelligence. Alongside my goal to achieve academically and work part-time, I intend to learn about advancements in STEM, not just in artificial intelligence.
Aside from my interests in STEM fields, I also love linguistics, photography and music. I am currently finishing my education in Spanish and plan to purchase Photoshop to increase the quality of my photo editing. I have been playing the piano for 10 years and am learning how to play the sitar.
My main goal in participating in the STEM Scholars program is to have a well-rounded experience at The Ohio State University that is both engaging and rewarding for my college career and professional life.
The Honors and Scholars G.O.A.L.S. are Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. With my ePortfolio, I want to reflect on my growth and impact in my time in university. I want to achieve these objectives not just as requirements, but as ways to be involved in activities at The Ohio State University and in Columbus. To gain global awareness, I will have become a member of the Indian American Association. I chose this organization because I want to meet other Indian Americans and be involved in a community I can relate to. I don’t intend to participate in a research opportunity with a professor this semester; however, I definitely plan to be particularly engaged in my Programming Java class since code is a topic that interests me academically and professionally. For academic enrichment, I want to pursue a project on my own related to code. This project will not be a requirement for any of my classes, but something for me to engage in by myself to gain a deeper understanding of programming and the limits of computers. I feel that my weakest trait is taking leadership and guiding others. in order to build this quality, I am going to lead an invasive species removal service. I have done countless invasive species removals as a volunteer, so I want to take this passion of mine and try to organize an event for which I can lead of group of people to a common goal.
My ultimate career goals are to become a data scientist and own my own business. With these goals in mind, I want to make controlled and calculated advancements in artificial intelligence and eventually become a businesswoman who shares a skill or experience she is passionate about.
