Exploring Columbus

I have not decided to pick one of the lists. I have not chosen a list because I wanted to try some of the restaurants columbus has to offer but I also wanted the freedom to go see a Blue Jackets game if I decided to. I hope that this assignment introduces me to the variety of activities that the Columbus area has to offer. That way I will have places to go and explore off campus. One experience I have had in downtown Columbus was going to my high school hockey team’s state playoff game. I was in eighth grade and preparing to enter high school. I played hockey so it was a great experience to go to Nationwide Arena to see our team play in the state playoffs.

The first place I visited was Stack City, a burger restaurant. The outside of the restaurant was unique and it made a good first impression for the restaurant. The inside was nice too and the restaurant was clean. The menu was easy to understand and while it mostly contained burgers, there were other options as well. I ordered a BBQ Burger and it was very good. The meal was affordable, even for a college student. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to a friend or anyone looking for a good burger.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

The second place that I visited was Jeni’s ice cream shop. I had been to a Jenis once before but I was not able to sample as many flavors as I wanted to. The Columbus ice cream shop is well known for its variety of strange flavors from pumpkin to corn. I was not that adventurous however as I ordered peanut butter ice cream with chocolate flakes and dark chocolate ice cream. The ice cream was incredible and it was not too expensive. The environment of the store was positive and I would recommend that anyone who likes ice cream go to Jeni’s at least one time.

The final location I went to was the Olentangy River water trail. The trail provides a scenic view of the Olentangy River and it is easily accessible to Ohio State students. It runs from Worthington Hills Park to Confluence Park and the trail is 13 miles long in total. The trail is While the weather was not very good when I was there, I could see the trail being popular among runners in the summer and spring. I know many people who run on a daily basis and I would recommend the trail to them.

My favorite experience from this project was going to Stack City to get burgers. The burgers were fantastic and the service was exceptional. Two out of my three locations were food related and I learned that there is good food near campus that I can access easily. I will definitely continue to explore more food options that Columbus has to offer. If anyone else wants to explore food options around Columbus I would suggest both Jeni’s and Stack city but they could explore any of the other options that Columbus has to offer as well.

My peer group visited a restaurant called Brassica. It served mediterranean salads and sandwiches.   The food was very good and the atmosphere was lively. I do not usually eat mediterranean food, but the trip made realize that I  should try new things even if I am not sure if I will like it. During the trip, I was able to talk to my peer group and get to know everybody better. I was able to get good advice about classes and college life in general. I would recommend that everyone go to Brassica because even though I do not eat mediterranean food often, I still thought the food was really good. Going to Brassica was an overall good experience and I would go back in the future.

Artifacts

Throughout high school, sports were always a big part of my life. I played at least two sports a year for all four years of highschool and almost every day after school I would go to a game or practice. I met many of my best friends through sports since they consumed many hours of my week. Sports also helped me academically. I became more competitive and while it may seem like sports would make my grades worse, my  busy schedule made me more efficient and focused on the tasks that I needed to complete.

During  my first semester in college, my greatest resources have been other people and many of the people I met are in the same dorm as me. Being in Humanitarian Engineering Scholars has helped me find a great community of people who can help each other in many ways. One way is through academics. Most people on the floor are in similar classes and are able to help each other out with understanding and completing assignments. Outside of class, I have become friends with many of the people on my floor and this is why I chose my dorm as my artifact.

About Me

Hello, my name is Billy Kelly and I am a first year student at the Ohio State University. I am studying engineering but I am undecided on the exact type of engineering that I would like to study. In high school I enjoyed math and science classes the most and since engineering would allow me to continue along this path, I selected it as my major. Outside of school I participated in many different extracurricular activities. I played hockey, baseball, and golf and on Sundays I volunteered to teach PSR classes at my church. I worked at the local rec center teaching young children how to skate and play hockey. In the summers I caddied at a country club near my house. During my first year at Ohio State I want to decide what type of engineering degree I want to pursue and work hard to get a good start. I hope to be able to participate in an internship or co-op while I am attending Ohio State. It is also important to continue serving the community by volunteering as often as possible. If it is possible I am also interested in studying abroad for a semester to broaden my education and get to see different parts of the world.

Top 5 Strengths:

  1. Competition- This strength means that I often compare myself to others and try to beat them in all aspects of life. This is accurate to me because I love the competition of sports and I often find myself measuring success in the classroom based on how I am doing compared to other students.
  2. Achiever- I connect to this strength because I am constantly trying to challenge myself. When I try to rest i often feel like I should be doing something else.
  3. Harmony- I will try to avoid starting an argument unless it is absolutely necessary and I often find myself mediating during disputes between other people.
  4. Developer- I realize that as college students, no one is fully developed yet, however as everyone continue to experience new situations, they will begin to find who they really are.
  5. Empathy- I can usually tell how others are feeling based on small signs that they give off. Using this, I can anticipate what they want or what they are going to say and act on it.
