G.O.A.L.S. End of Sophomore Year

G. So far to cultivate my global awareness, I have taken a 2 week medical service trip down to the Dominican Republic with my Volunteers Around the World club, and taken a few semesters in French and Spanish. I plan to study abroad next summer, hopefully in Germany, to continue working on global awareness.

O. I’ve started to take some more advanced coursework that allows me the chance to get an understanding for the research process, including several chemistry lab courses. I have not participated in any official research yet, though I plan to do this next summer during my study abroad trip or somewhere here in Ohio.

A. My curriculum proposed in my honors contract shows my commitment to academic enrichment through all of the advanced coursework, honors courses, and well-rounded course selections. I’ve chosen Chemistry as my major, making sure to take honors courses in my field of study in addition to honors GE’s. I’ve also decided to add a minor in Clinical Psychology to further my understanding of people, since my end goal will be attending medical school.

L. The biggest thing I’ve done to further my leadership development is to run and get elected as the President of the Chimes Junior Class Honorary. I’ve learned a lot so far about leading an organization and all the work that goes on behind the scenes to make sure everyone works together and enjoys their time spent. My current job as an EMT also helps me to develop as a leader since people rely on me to help them confidently in their time of need.

S. I have been involved in my medical service trip to the DR through VAW, I volunteer with my sorority DZ regularly, I’ve volunteered at the James Cancer Hospital for a semester, and I am currently working on organizing multiple volunteer trips and projects through the Chimes Honorary. I will continue to volunteer wherever I can, and plan on going down to the coast soon to help with the relief efforts for Hurricane Irma.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness- I plan to work towards my goal of global awareness through study abroad, service trips, and several courses throughout my college career. I would love to explore French culture and deepen my understanding of French language by studying abroad junior or senior year. This summer I will be traveling to the Dominican Republic with Volunteers Around the World in order to provide free health care, teach children about health, and explore Dominican culture for 2 weeks. I also plan on incorporating my future in the medical field into my global studies coursework by taking Medicine in the Ancient World and learning about many older medical practices from around the world.

Original Inquiry- In order to work towards my goal of original inquiry I plan to take several advanced science electives, volunteer in labs and hospitals, and get involved in research. Taking physical chemistry and biochemistry will both help me to further understand the workings of the world, and will give me the knowledge I need to work towards meaningful original inquiry. I plan to volunteer in either a lab or a hospital this summer, and I know that either will teach me a lot about the field that I am interested in and will allow me to have new experiences to inspire inquiry. Sophomore or junior year I plan on getting involved working with a professor here on a research project, and possibly getting funding to start my own.

Academic Enrichment- I will use my Academic Plan to create a program of study that serves my academic and professional interests by forming it to both involve my love for science and French culture and include the requirements I need to fulfill in order to attend medical school. I chose my chemistry major because it has always been my favorite science field and it teaches on the most basic level how everything in the universe functions. I chose my clinical psychology minor because I also want to be able to understand the people that live in this universe and to learn about what chemistry can’t always explain when it comes to human life. I am most excited to be taking Anthropology, Medicine in the Ancient World, and Classical Mythology because they hit on some of my side interests that are more cultural based. My course selections show that I am committed to truly learning about people so that I can best serve them as a physician.

Leadership Development- I am currently involved in Volunteers Around the World, and plan on taking a leadership position on the executive board next year so that I can assist in planning our service trips and ensuring that as many students as possible have the opportunity to go on this life changing trip, and that we can do as much good as possible for the people will we be treating. In addition I plan on joining Greek life and am signed up to rush this semester. I will run for a position each year, and I intend to run for president my senior year so that I can have the experience of leading such a large group of people in service and in creating a functioning network and family.

Service Engagement- This summer I will travel to the Dominican Republic on a service trip to provide free health care with Volunteers Around the World. Throughout the school year we run fundraisers to be able to purchase all of the medical supplies that we will need on the trip, and next year I plan on taking a leadership position in the organization. This summer I also plan on volunteering in a lab or hospital, and in addition to teaching me a lot it will also allow me to give back to the community around me. In the future I would like to look more into tutoring at risk kids, as it is something I have done in the past but would like to find another similar program to get involved in here at OSU.
