Year in Review

This academic year, I have grown in several ways. These include growth in study skills, leadership, and independence. First off, I have truly grown the most in my habits when it comes to studying. In high school, I did not truly know how to effectively study. Even at the start of the semester, I didn’t know exactly what I was doing. However, I quickly learned that I needed to find efficient ways to further improve my learning. Over time, I learned what strategies to use, and that I had to go to a study room to get the most work done. Next, my leadership skills were in use throughout the semester. Like all honors and scholars, I strive to be a leader in my community. This year, I was selected to be on the Leadership Council of my scholars program, furthering this notion. From this experience, I have continued my learning on how to be an effective liaison towards the members of the group that I am helping to lead. And lastly, I have grown in my self-independence. Before I arrived at OSU, almost everything that I did was assisted or helped on by one of my parents or a teacher. Now, I have learned how to fit into my niche on campus, and truly thrive on my own.

Throughout the second half of the year, I’ve truly come into my own in the sense that I am truly efficient at managing my classes and workload. I feel confident in my abilities to understand how to approach tasks and when to plan to accomplish them. As my classes start becoming more business-oriented, the work that I am completing has reaffirmed my plan to stick with my marketing major. I am enjoying most of my classes this semester and I can definitely see myself fulfilling my original plan. On the other hand, my love for the Sport and Wellness Scholars group is only growing. Considering that my end goal is to gain a job in the sports marketing field, having a direct connection to the sporting world through this organization is invaluable. I find that I made the right choices before college, and that I am ready to become even further immersed into both areas of my development.

Artifacts

The artifact that I will talk about here is an award that I won in high school for my soccer team. It was called the “Coaches Award”, and it stood for one’s fantastic leadership and hard work that made the coaches’ jobs a little easier. I won this award both my sophomore and my senior year, and I think that it is a great mentality to live by. Taking the extra step to be prepared and ready is so important. Also, being someone who can act as a leader when others may not be available is invaluable. Therefore, I try to model this kind of behavior, and I try to exemplify leadership wherever I may be.

About Me

My name is Ben Kelley, and I am a member of the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars. I come from Dayton, Ohio, and I’ve wanted to be a Buckeye long before I was one. As a child, I was an Ohio State fan from an early age. When it came time to decide where to attend college, the decision was an easy one. I am so excited to have spent a semester here and I love Ohio State. When you love Ohio State so much, you naturally want to be a leader for them. Therefore, I have tried my best to exemplify the qualities of leadership in the classroom and outside of it. I am a Marketing major, and I strive to succeed in all of my classes, not just those with business included. I have also joined Buckeyethon, been named to the Leadership Council for my scholars group, and also played in multiple intramural sports leagues. Looking out on my upcoming 3 and 1/2 years here, I cannot wait for what comes next. Go Bucks!
