Year in Review

I️ thought the HSS program was very well planned this year. I️ thought the weekly newsletter was the most helpful as it laid out everything we could get involved with and there was a lot of his events that made it easy to get all of our events in for the year. Overall I️ think the year went well and I️ liked how it was easy for us to get involved in HSS for example with the TA position for the scholars class and for the HSS mentors. This year I️ got involved with Medlife at OSU and I️ also am involved with Volunteers Around the World and am going on a trip to Peru this summer for a medical outreach trip. I️ also am planning on being a mentor for HSS next year and applied for the scholar TA position and the PLTL Peer Leader position for Chemistry 1610.My classes first semester were not too hard to adjust to and overall the were not too hard. Second semester was definitely harder, but it all ended up fine in the end after lots of hard work. Overall, I️ think this year went really well and I️ was able to get very involved at in HSS and at Ohio State with the different clubs and opportunities.

Academic Enrichment: I️ interviewed Aaron D’Amore who is a 3rd year Biology major on the pre-med track. Aaron discussed his research and how he is preparing for the MCAT which he is planning to take this summer. He discussed how research is important and how it doesn’t really matter what type of research you get you just need to find research that you’re interested in. The current lab he works in does research on rattle snakes and he said he got the position through talking to his professors. He currently has a job lined up in D.C. with the National Institute of Health in a lab for his gap year between medical school and Ohio State. With his MCAT preparation he has taken 8 full MCAT’s for the last 8 Saturdays and he discussed how stressful  it has been but how worthwhile it will be. He gave some advice with some good classes to take that have helped prepare hime for the MCAT and for medical school and discussed the MCAT prep classes he took this semester.

S: To achieve my 20 hours of service this year I️ volunteered at Akron Children’s Hospital to get the bulk of my hours. I️ also received volunteer hours from Med-life through various volunteering at the meetings for different organizations in the Columbus community. Lastly, I️ also received a few hours for volunteering from the RedCross Blood Drives around campus. I️ think by doing a few different types of volunteering this year I️ was able to see a lot of variety while being able to get involved in the Columbus community while staying involved with my community at home.

Scholars ACH Presentation

To achieve my service hours as a second year Health Science Scholars student I volunteered as a summer quality department intern with Akron Children’s Hospital. In this position I received over 120 hours of volunteer hours in the summer of 2018. The link to the powerpoint attached contains summary of the tasks I completed and the opportunities I received through this volunteer program.

About Me

I am a first year undergraduate student in the Health Science Scholars Program. I was born in England, but have lived in New Hampshire and Ohio, which is where I currently reside. In the future, I hope to work with prematurely born infants as a doctor. I am currently working towards a B.S. in Biochemistry and a minor in Spanish while on the Pre-Med track. After Receiving my degree, I plan to attend Medical school in order to become a doctor. I am also looking to become involved in a research opportunity during my time at The Ohio State University. In high school I was very involved in clubs such as National Honor Society, la Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, the Freshman Mentor Program and many more. Even though I partook in many clubs, my most meaningful experience was volunteering at Akron Children’s Hospital where I spent the last three summers and school breaks volunteering. In college, I would like to become involved on campus through joining clubs and pursuing her volunteer work at a local hospital. When not in class, I enjoy hiking, reading, and exploring new places.
