Spring Project

This semester in Arctitecture, Landscape, and City Scholars we did projects “to independently explore [our] interests and practice effective goal-setting techniques.” For my project, I decided to research study abroad opportunities and ways to fund a trip because traveling is something I am passionate about. The summary can be found on this Adobe Spark Page.

Columbus To Do List Part 2

The second place I went to for my Columbus To Do List was Schiller Park. This park was beautiful when I was there with all the fall leaves and I think it would be just as beautiful if I were to visit again during the warmer months. The stage looked really nice for a park as well and I think it would be really cool to see one of their Actor’s Summer Theater shows in the summertime. I also liked the pond with all the ducks swimming and standing around. They were really cute because they didn’t appear to be afraid of people and they sat right off the path, almost close enough to touch. While I was there, I also ran into some old family friends who live close by and it was nice to see them again.

Scioto Audubon was the third place I visited and my favorite park on the list. It had a great view of the skyline of the city and it was very interactive. I love rock climbing walls, so someday when I get the chance, I hope to go back and try that one out. The walkway over the pond was beautiful and gave a nice angle to take a picture of the metro parks tower. I am also a huge dog lover, so I appreciate that there is a dog park there as well. I have a dog at home and I think she would love it if I brought her there and let her play with some other dogs.

Pistacia Vera was an adorable little shop with a ton of delicious-looking pastries. I decided to try their specialty, so I bought one buckeye macaron and one vanilla bean macaron. They tasted ok to me, but they’re not something I would want all the time. My brother, however, loved them and I think I might get some as a present for him for Christmas or his birthday.

The Book Loft was by far my favorite place I visited for my Columbus To Do List. I love books, so that store was like a fantasy for me. I explored every one of the thirty-two rooms and had a ton of fun. I found a lot of books I want to read, but and only bought one. I definitely plan to go back with my friends sometime to show them around and buy some more books. It would be really easy to spend a whole day there and get lost in all of the books and the rooms.

I also stopped by Katzinger’s Deli, which was a nice little place. I’m a really picky eater though so it would be hard for me to actually buy a sandwich without feeling bad about making a ton of substitutions. To me, I think this place would be best for adults who have their own house or apartment instead of college students who have a dorm and a meal plan. If I bought anything but a sandwich there, I probably wouldn’t eat it before it went bad. Overall, I think it was a really nice deli, just not somewhere I will frequent for now.

From these experiences, I learned that Columbus has a diverse array of things for any type of person to do. We have a lot of culture in this city and I really appreciate that. I want to continue to explore more of Columbus because I had a lot of fun and the city it isn’t as big and scary as it seemed when I was younger. If someone else wanted to complete the German Village List, I would recommend going to the parks as soon as possible so it will still be warm and you may even be able to see a show at the Actor’s Summer Theater. I would also recommend setting aside a whole day to go to the Book Loft because you could stay there for hours.

Mentor Interview 1 Reflection

For this interview, I met with my mentor Taylor Brill. This was our first meeting together, so we just discussed ourselves and our college experiences so we could get to know each other better. During the interview, I learned that we are very similar and we come from similar backgrounds. We enjoy some of the same hobbies, we both grew up in small towns not too far outside of Columbus, and neither of us knew what we wanted to do coming into college. It was helpful for me to hear about her experience exploring different classes to find a major of interest to her because I am going through that process now in University Exploration. It’s nice to know that someone else went through what I’m going through and they did find an answer.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S. Spring Semester Project

For my Scholars G.O.A.L.S. Spring Semester Project, I hope to focus on global awareness. One of my life goals is to travel the world and I would especially like to go to Europe, so this would be a good opportunity for me to plan out how I could do that as a study abroad trip. I plan to begin researching study abroad opportunities, such as Global May, over winter break and early next semester. My biggest issue will definitely be how I fund my study abroad trip, so I plan to also look for and/or apply to numerous scholarships. If I decide to study abroad in the summer of 2019, I plan to have all of this done early in the spring semester. If I decide to wait a year, I hope to finish my research before the second half of the semester, a time when I will will too overwhelmed with my other classes.

Columbus To Do List Part 1

For my Columbus To Do List, I chose German Village/Brewery District because I had seen some of the area before and I thought it was very charming so I wanted to explore it more. From this assignment, I hope to learn more about German Village/Brewery District but also Columbus as a whole because, although I lived fairly close to the city, I didn’t visit very often. I grew up in a small rural area where most people were the same, therefore I also hope to learn more about other cultures that may be present in German Village and the Brewery District so I can expand my worldview

To start off my adventure through German Village, I went to Schmidt’s Sausage Haus. Coming up to the restaurant, my favorite thing is the brick paved streets because they give it a great historic atmosphere. Inside, I loved how everything had such a German feel, even the outfits of some of the employees. I also quite enjoyed my potato pancakes and my chocolate cream pie. They also feature live music four nights a week, which I, unfortunately, missed on this trip, but would love to go see in the future. From this experience, I learned a little more about German culture through their food and the history of German Village as it pertains to Schmidt’s. I would absolutely recommend this iconic German Village restaurant to a friend and I plan to go back in the future to try more of what Schmidt’s has to offer.

About Me

I’m Taylor, a first-year Architecture, Landscape, and City Scholars student. I come from West Jefferson, Ohio, where I graduated from West Jefferson High School in May of 2018. I am undecided on my major, but I am considering  actuarial science. At Ohio State I am a member of the club Buckeyes for Baking, where we bake desserts to donate to a local drop-in center, Star House. I am also in the process of joining Guiding Eyes for the Blind, which is an organization that trains guide dogs. So far, I have enjoyed my time as a Buckeye, and I can’t wait to continue to be a part of this university for the next four years.
