Grand Rounds event 4/20

For my monthly meeting I went to the Grand Rounds event hosted by Dr. Chris Taylor on 4/20. He is the Associate Professor of Medical Dietetics and Family Medicine which is pretty amazing if you ask me. He gave a presentation on Dietary Pattern in Obesity (or thats what I believe it was on as I came 5 minutes late seeing as how I couldn’t figure out how to get to Atwell Hall. I know, I’m a failure). Based on what he was saying though I can assume that is what the presentatio was on. He spoke a lot about how he worked with different groups to get dietary data to see different patterns in (can you guess?) diets and get a look into what causes obesity. He also gave us tons of data, I mean a gazillion slides with charts that opened up to other charts from young children to older adults. He spoke about Scurvy at one point and why its important to look at the data a certain way or else facts are lost (I couldn’t tell you how to look at the data, a lot of what he was saying was above my head no matter that I’ve taken a stats class). He even mentioned plant based diets at one point and though I don’t exactly like what he had to say, I will admit that in order for a vegan diet to work you need to plan it right (as is with any diet really). Its interesting that he also talked on the whole “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and why it is/isn’t and how our patterns (there it is again) on making up for missing breakfast is just as crucial. AKA our snacking and what kind of snacks we choose. Also the things we drink (like sugary beverages) play a huge role too. ANd then he talked about how older individuals (even these still in the workplace) struggle with getting enough protein which is very strange to me but after he explained it and showed us the data (what wonderful graphs he has) I couldn’t exactly disbelieve it. I’m definitely going to be looking more seriously at planning my own vegan diet because he did make some important points.
