My First Semester at OSU

My first semester at Ohio State has been great. It has been filled with friends, football games, and unforgettable experiences. In August I was really nervous that college classes would be really hard and I would not have an easy time making friends, but it has been just the opposite. My grades remain strong and I am less stressed than I was in high school about schoolwork. In addition, I found a great group of friends that have allowed me to have a multitude of great experiences at OSU. I am extremely glad I was placed in the Humanities Scholars Program because majority of my friends are in Humanities as well. Also, it has allowed me to experience Columbus with them in order to gain my points for the semester. The Scholars Program has allowed me to form a close-knit community with people who I might not have met without being in the program. Next semester I plan on attending more Humanities events to help make my college experience memorable. In addition to participating next semester I want to continue to be a part of the group the remaining time I go to Ohio State. For example, sophomore year I want to become a mentor to help future freshman with their Ohio State experience and to ensure they are welcomed into the Humanities community. Being a Humanities Scholar has allowed me to have a great first semester at Ohio State and has allowed me to make new lifelong friends and experience unique adventures.

“But Out” Reflection

I’d like to do more volunteering in schools, but I don’t have a car to get me there.

I’d like to do more volunteering in schools, and I don’t have a car to get me there. I should find a way to get a ride with someone else or ride the bus.

I’d like to do more activities to help build my resume, but it’s hard to join clubs in the middle of a semester.

I’d like to do more activities to help build my resume, and it’s hard to join clubs in the middle of a semester. So I should look for clubs that start next semester or email a club’s leader asking what I need to do to join mid-semester.

I’d like to not work on four hours of math homework on Wednesday nights, but I’m always busy doing other homework on Monday and Tuesday.

I’d like to not work four hours of math homework on Wednesday nights, and I’m always busy doing other homework on Monday and Tuesday. I should work ahead on other classes’ homework on the weekends, so I can spread out doing my math homework during the weekdays.

I’d like to get an A in Human Nutrition, but I’m not good at science.

I’d like to get an A in Human Nutrition, and I’m not good at science. So I need to think of specific questions to ask my professor during office hours and devote more time to studying for that class.

I’d like to work out more, but I’m always busy doing homework at night.

I’d like to work out more, and I’m always busy doing homework at night. I should work ahead on my homework for the week during the weekends, so I have less work to do on weeknights and more time to work out.

Humans of OSU

“My life story? I’m really just a blob floatin’ through time. I don’t know what you want from me. My one true passion in life is sleeping. I also enjoy heated blankets and cats. I may or may not have smuggled a heated blanket on campus. One time I brought a power converter so I could use my heated blanket to sleep through a nine hour road trip with my friend. I literally slept 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Only to go back to bed at 10 p.m. That was a good day.”

My First Week at OSU

My journey at Ohio State has been very hectic so far. Welcome Week was full of fun events, such as Convocation, Buck-i-Frenzy, and Buckeye Kick-Off. All of these events have allowed me to grasp the Buckeye spirit. I have learned new chants and learned the words to “Carmen Ohio.” In addition, classes have started and the workload has begun to pile up. (Whoever told me high school had less work than college was wrong.)

While all of the events have kept me busy, my excitement for the upcoming school year has only increased. I cannot wait to attend the first football game of the season! I’m also extremely excited about getting involved in clubs and intramural sports. Although I am thrilled for the upcoming school year, one aspect I am worried about is making friends. I have met many people, but a lot of them I do not see again or I have not made a quality connection with them yet.

Even though making friends has made me slightly nervous, hopefully I will be able to find a nice group of friends in Humanities Scholars. I’m excited about Humanities Scholars because it allows me to make the university a little bit smaller and helps me get know new people. I am looking forward to helping serve the community through Humanities Scholars, as well as going to Chicago, attending community events, and learning more about humanities. The Scholars Program along with Welcome Week events have made me satisfied about my decision to be a Buckeye and excited for what is to come in the future.

About Me

IMG_2846My name is Leila Kazemi and I’m from Cincinnati, Ohio. I’m a first year student at Ohio State majoring in Early Childhood Education. I plan on getting my bachelor’s degree at Ohio State along with an endorsement that will allow me to teach fourth and fifth grade, in addition to preschool through third grade. I love kids and I hope to get involved in a service club at Ohio State that allows me work with them. I also enjoy playing soccer, which I plan to continue playing intramurally in college. In high school I was fortunate enough to travel to Europe twice with a choir, and I hope to fulfill my passion for travel by studying abroad. I’m extremely excited to be a Buckeye and can’t wait to see what opportunities Ohio State brings to my life.
