Artifacts

INDA2010-00139

The artifact I have chosen for this entry is the presentation that my scholars group and I did on the UN Millennium goals project. The goal that we were assigned to study was maternal health care, and the region that we chose to study was India. This powerpoint presentation was created a couple of weeks ago when we had to do class presentations in our scholars seminar class. The reason I chose this artifact is because it expands on several topics that I am interested in. The issue of maternal healthcare in India expands on the topics of women’s rights, important issues in developing countries, and how living in poverty or rural areas can impact a person’s life.

Going into this project, I was aware that most of the healthcare for women in India is not affordable or adequate. However, I was shocked to learn that more than half of India’s female population encounters the problem of not having proper maternal healthcare. Even middle class woman in India face these problems, because medicine needed during pregnancies and after pregnancies can sometimes end up being $800 for just one prescription. As I continued researching maternal health care, I found more startling facts like that. From this research, I learned how to find data from reliable website and what constitutes as a credible site. From this topic, I will be able to bring forward the issue of healthcare for women in developing countries and how it is an issue that needs

About Me

My name is Harliv Kaur and I am from North Potomac, Maryland. As a first year student at the Ohio State University, I will be double majoring in business and political science. Coming from a politically active family and being raised in a city with such close proximity to Washington, DC helped shape the future I wanted to pursue. 20 years ago, my father was granted political asylum by the government of United States to protect him from unfair prosecution in India. This story helped spark my interest in politics, world affairs, and encouraged me to be an active citizen like my father was. Throughout high school, I remained worked on student council and my county’s youth committee which allowed me to work with different population of students. Working on governor and delegate campaigns also helped me broaden my understanding of people and truly experience diversity. With my exposure to activism in high school, it became clear to me that in the future I would ideally like to work with an organization such as the United Nations, the State Department, or the White House. I hope to pursue a career that allows me to be a leader while also serving the people around me. As a minority and female, I have always found importance behind the prospect of leading and being active in my community. In college, I hope to join similar organizations and participate in cultural and social diffusing activities to help get a better understanding of this new population. All in all, I look forward to becoming an active student at the Ohio State University. 10547732_10204603380301046_5977146442515977429_o
