Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Global Awareness:

During my time as an undergraduate student at The Ohio State University, I hope to take the opportunity to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country. I have a passion for Spanish, which is part of the reason that I am pursuing a Spanish minor, and I hope to enrich my educational experience by bringing my learning out into the real world. Additionally, I am interested in taking the course HIV In Context: East Africa, where I will gain valuable exposure to real-life situations in a class that integrates science with history and study abroad. These experiences will allow me to gain global awareness by exposing me to different cultures than I have experienced before.

Original Inquiry:

I hope to work toward the goal of original inquiry by pursuing research experiences in scientific fields. I will speak to my professors who are involved with research and request the opportunity to get involved. I will also make use of the office of undergraduate research.

Academic Enrichment:

I will not just take classes to complete my major, but seek out classes that I find genuinely interesting and intellectually stimulating. I will take advantage of the opportunity to shadow physicians in order to take my learning outside the classroom. I chose to major in biology because I enjoyed biology classes in high school, and the biology major provides the benefit of aligning closely with pre-med prerequisite courses. I enjoy learning Spanish and Psychology, and I believe that pursuing minors in both areas will benefit me in my future work as a physician. I am excited to take the course HIV In Context: East Africa because of the once-in-a-lifetime travel and learning experience it allows. My course selections go beyond the minimum requirements because I am pursuing not one but two minors.

Leadership Development:

I am currently involved in the pre-medicine club, which allows me to have some leadership potential. I am interested in reapplying to be a Student Leadership Advocate. I would like to shadow physicians or take part in a medically-based internship, as well as become involved in research. I am a figure skater, and I am in the process of joining the OSU Figure Skating Club.

Service Engagement:

I am currently on hiatus from a three-year service commitment to the teen volunteer program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I plan to begin volunteering again over the winter break, as I have found my experience over the past three years to be both rewarding and educational. I am also open to volunteering at other hospitals or health-based organizations, such as Equitas Health or any of the Columbus-area hospitals.

About Me

Lily Kaufman is a first year undergraduate student in The Ohio State University’s College of Arts and Sciences, and is a member of the Ohio State University Honors Program. She hopes to one day work as a pediatric doctor, as she is currently pre-med and an Honors Biology major. She is interested in a variety of areas of study and is considering changing majors, adding a second major, or adding a minor in either Neuroscience, Spanish, Psychology, or Business. Lily enjoys engaging in service work outside of school, and was highly involved in her high school’s Service Board organization as well as a long-time Art Cart volunteer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Lily hopes to continue volunteering in a hospital setting during her time at The Ohio State University, as well as get involved with research. Outside of academics and service, Lily enjoys figure skating, for which she is currently training to pass her Senior Moves in the Field Test, as well as baking, spending time with family and friends, exercising, playing with her dog, and trying new restaurants. While at OSU, Lily hopes to join clubs and organizations such as YoungLife, Greek Life, and pre-health interest clubs.
