G.O.A.L.S.-Year in Review

Global Awareness:

The primary way I have developed my global awareness is through joining an Indian dance student organization on campus: Raas in the 614. Through this organization, I have learned more about my own Indian culture and heritage, while also celebrating the diversity that exists in this world. The other way I have developed global awareness is through my service work. I have met and engaged with many people of many different backgrounds and cultures who have shown me the unique difference present around the world. I plan to further develop my global awareness by taking coursework in the global studies category and directly engaging with different cultures through travel.

Original Inquiry:

During the first half of my undergraduate studies, I assisted in a bioengineering research lab, working on a spine research project. Through this experience, I have learned about the overall research process and developed my critical thinking skills. I will continue to work towards original inquiry goals by continuing to assist in a research lab.

Academic Enrichment:

My Honors Contract demonstrates a commitment to academic enrichment by including a diverse set of courses that will allow me to explore various educational dimensions and have a more well-rounded course of study. I chose the Neuroscience major as I aspire to become a physician. I felt that this major would allow me to expand my scientific knowledge in a field directly relevant to future medical study. I chose the Economics major as I was interested by the field and wanted to engage in study that is less relevant to medicine. However, economics is a major part of the world and is highly prevalent in the healthcare industry, making it useful to know. My GE course selections demonstrate a commitment to excellence by allowing me to become more educated in broader areas of study that I would not be as exposed to when focusing on the study of medicine.

Leadership Development:

This past year, I was highly involved with a few student organizations: Neuroscience Ambassadors, Mirrors Sophomore Honorary, and Raas in the 614. Within all of these organizations, I have pursued leadership positions as best as possible in order to develop my own leadership skills. Although these organizations are not directly relevant to my career goal of a career in medicine, I believe they have been useful experiences to engage in activities that I am passionate about, while developing the crucial leadership skills every physician needs.

Service Engagement:

I have volunteered at various locations through my undergraduate career thus far. I have volunteered at a NNEMAP Food Pantry, the Wexner Medical Center, the Student Wellness Center, and at the Cherry Street Mission among other experiences. All of these experiences have allowed me to give back to my community while simultaneously growing as a person. I hope to continue serving my community as a physician, and also through various charitable organizations and programs.

G.O.A.L.S. Statement

Global awareness means appreciating different cultures other than your own and working to learn more about them through various types of experiences. I plan on expanding my global awareness by taking courses regarding different cultures around the world and possibly studying abroad.

Original inquiry means asking questions about the world around us and striving to find answers to those questions. I want to pursue this facet by always critically analyzing information in classes and asking questions to understand the material better. I would like to find and participate in research in an independent laboratory to attempt to solve some problem or simply further scientific understanding.

Academic enrichment means taking rigorous coursework in a well rounded manner in order to achieve goals. I chose the neuroscience major and economics minor in order to gain all the knowledge I need to apply for medical while also gaining a diverse set of knowledge that allows me to be an active member of society. The courses I am taking and will be taking challenge me, helping promote my problem solving and critical analysis skills.

Leadership development means working towards improving leadership skills through various activities and experiences. I hope to improve my leadership skills by taking on more leadership roles in different clubs and attending events to learn how to become a better leader. Currently, I am on my dorm’s hall council, becoming a leader of the dorm and expanding my leadership experience for the future.

Service engagement means forming a commitment to serving the community and seeking out opportunities to serve as often as possible. I hope to volunteer at a hospital and participate in various service events through different organizations such as Pay It Forward. I want to help those who cannot help themselves as much as possible, which is something I am attempting to do as the service chair of my dorm’s hall council, setting up service events for students in the dorm.
