Howdy Botanists!

My name is Katie Bruns and I am a senior Forestry Fisheries and Wildlife student. While I may specialize in wildlife sciences, botany has always been a passion of mine. From working in my high school’s greenhouse, to having hundreds of specimens I’ve collected from the outdoors, I have an appreciation for all things green. My formal education in plants; however, has yet to bloom – so with this class and this webpage, I hope to not only educate you on the Ohio outdoors, but also myself! One of the things I appreciate most about my field and nature is how interdisciplinary it all is. From the wildlife, the fish, the birds, the trees, the plants, the soil, the streams, and so much more, everything has an impact on its ecosystem. To fully understand what it means to be have an impact and be impacted by your surroundings, I can’t wait to explore the mosses and the plants that make life on earth possible!

Myself with a coyote (Canis latrans) at Dr. Stan Gehrt’s coyote lab in Chicago!

To learn a bit more about me as we begin this 7 week long adventure, I’ve drawn you my coat of arms! Starting from the top left, my symbol that describes me is a buck mount. I love all things wildlife and truly have an appreciation for the marvel that is a 8-point buck! Moving to the right. my motto is “Live and Let Live.” I am a strong believer in allowing living things to live how they please, and I will live how I please, we only have one life, no need to critique how someone chooses to live it! On the bottom left is my hometown of Cincinnati. Nothing beats skyline while looking over the skyline! 🙂 I have always lived there, and while I hope to travel lots in the future, Cincy will always have a place in my heart! Lastly is my major, as stated above earlier, but I don’t get tired of talking about it, so I’m happy to mention it any chance I get! I had the pleasure of working with the Division of Wildlife where I really saw this dream take off! From snake surveys to black bear trapping, electrofishing to goose banding, my heart lies with the wildlife – and hopefully soon with the plants!
