Lee Krasner was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 27th 1908. She was an American abstract expressionist painter, this is often characterized by the use of gestural brush strokes or marks, you also get the impression of spontaneity through this kind of art. She had formal art training at several institutions in New York. She was influenced by George Bridgman and Hans Hofman, becoming more formalized in the depiction of the human anatomy, this also enriched Pollock by making his art more intuitive. In the 1930’s she obtained a position for the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project, working along side the Mural Division she learned about working on a larger scale. In the future she continued to be an active member of the Artists Union and American Abstract Artists throughout her life. She marries Jackson Pollock who would also be categorized as an American abstract expressionist painter in 1945, some say he was a trouble artist. By the time they met and married Krasner was already an established artist, she introduced Pollock to the artist Willem de Kooning among other artistic figures. While living together near Springs, Long Island she developed Little Image paintings, it was thickly painted with abstract symbols. It is one of her most significant contributions to the Abstract Expressionism. Lee Krasner is seen as a very transitional figure in art and abstraction, her art work sells for high prices at auctions and is one of the few female artists to have had retrospective show at the Museum of Modern Art. Sadly, only after 11 years of marriage, Pollock dies in a car accident, Krasner then devoted the rest of her life to her husbands art to ensure his legacy, but she also was continuing to explore the art of abstraction, the last decade of her life was full of many honors, awards and publications. Krasner in 1978, died and was laid next to her husband, along with Rothko, and many others in the exhibition Abstraction Expressionism: The Formative Years.
