Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

As an Ohio State student I plan on doing my best to incorporate all aspects of GOALS to enhance my education as well as my character and existence as a human.

Firstly I want to involve myself heavily with global awareness. Currently I am taking the London Honors course. It was the only study abroad offered for first semester students, and I wanted to take advantage of any opportunity presented to me. Throughout my life I want to see as many places as I possibly can, starting with London, because OSU has given me that chance. Additionally, I am involved with the Kosciuszko Foundation for Polish Education and Learning. I am part of their summer camp staff and will be going to Poland each summer to teach children English as a second language. As a second generation immigrant, I want to maintain in touch with my roots, and being on the staff last summer changed my life and I want to continue to explore that part of my culture. I also want to take the class Micro 3789.05 to study HIV in East Africa and gain some perspective in that sense.

Next I was to expand my “Original Inquiry”, meaning I want to make my own questions and strive to learn things beyond the traditional classroom. Right now I am working on the Endophytes research project in my biology 1114H class. We’ve designed ou r own question and picked out our own samples to analyzed the fungi that grow within the plants. Furthermore, in the coming years I want to reach out to someone in the microbiology department about conducting some undergraduate research.

As for Academic Enrichment, right now, I took on the most rigorous course load I could. I’m taking 18 credit hours, but so far it really has been manageable. My Chem 1910H class has been really tough for me, but I like the challenge and want to continue on the honors chemistry path. In the future I want to take classes at Stone Lab, for a more hands on experience. Additionally I am in the astronomical society and women in math and science club.

The best current example of leadership development is my involvement in Habitat for Humanity. I want to eventually move into a leadership position in that club, because of how much I love the people and the common goal of the organization. The builds are one of the highlights of my week and the skills I’ve learned are going to be useful in the many years to come.

My biggest goal for my time at osu is to volunteer and commit to serving other as much as I can. Volunteer work was a huge part of my application to college and there are so many better ways to help the community here than there ever was back at home. My favorite club I’ve joined right now is Big Buckeye Little Buckeye, I have been going to a nearby community center and working with kids after school (playing games, crafts, helping with homework) it has been a big eye opener for me. I was to get involved with buckeye food alliance as well, it’s located in the Lincoln House basement (where I live) so it might be a convenient way for me to help. Additionally I want to apply to volunteer at the Wexner center in the next couple of years in order to get medical experience to help me on my Pharmacy School Application.

About Me

Hi, my name is Cate Kapalczynski and I am an Honors Biological Sciences major. As a bio major, my academic interests include the sciences, but I have a love for English and creative writing. My intended minor is in art history, but that may change in the near future. My goal is to become a pharmacist, as I am on the pre-Pharmacy track as well. Finally, one thing that makes me unique is that I have played the alto and tenor saxes for 8 years now.
