My Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement

  • Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences.

I have always been interested in deaf culture, because it is so different from any other culture. Since it is a culture that a lot of people don’t know exist, they are often not educated about it. I would like to learn more about deaf culture so that I can better understand and appreciate it, so I plan to take sign language in order to do so. Additionally, I plan to become more involved in Indian cultural organizations in order to become more immersed in my own culture.

  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community.

I would like to be part of some type of research at the university, so that I gain the valuable experiences that come with it and form connections with professors and researchers that will allow me to thrive in the future. My plan is to inform myself about the different types of research that is ongoing at the university, and find some that sound interesting to me, and then apply to be be a part of them. I am particularly interested in research because I know that it will give me a different perspective on how processes occur, which I may have not been able to see before.

  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.

One of my goals in order to fulfill my academic enrichment, in the classroom, is to make sure that I am taking classes that are interesting and challenging for me, so that I am able to better develop my learning skills. I want to take classes that will allow me to think critically, as I know that these will be more valuable for me in the long run, than a class that I can get a GPA boost from. As well as this, I have been attending meetings for, and would eventually like to become a member of, the Neuroscience (NuRhoPsi) Honor Society, because they have many events and opportunities to learn more about neuroscience and other medical fields.

  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

In order to develop my leadership skills, I am planning on joining a committee or applying for a leadership role in one of the organizations that I am involved in. As well as this, I would like to apply to be a Neuroscience ambassador and become more involved in the neuroscience program at the university.

  • Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

Currently, I have joined MedLife at the university, which participates in many service projects around the OSU community and also provides services to people who cannot always afford the best medical care. I also plan to volunteer at hospitals in the community in order to help people, and gain experiences that will be valuable for medical school.
