Video Introduction Assignment: Let’s Get to Know Each Other

This is assignment was used in a general education, lower-level undergraduate course. The Course Management System used for the assignment was Canvas, and this was a “discussion” post. It was graded as “complete/incomplete” and allowed “liking” and “threaded replies”.

Let’s Get to Know Each Other

Download the Canvas app on your phone, log in, navigate to our course, and use the “arrow” button in the top right hand corner to record a short video where you introduce yourself to the rest of the class. Since we are all going to see our families over the break, introduce your family too!

Remember, family can be defined very broadly. If you aren’t going to see parts of your family over break (i.e. you are an international student), make a video of you chatting with them on Skype, or introduce us to your Ohio family – maybe a community of friends. Be creative!

Try answering these questions in your brief video introduction:

  • Where do you live?
  • Who is in your family?
  • What interested you in taking this course?
  • What is something you would like to gain from taking this course?

If you have a camera on your computer, you may use the “media comment” feature in Canvas to record your video instead. If your computer doesn’t have a camera, it may have a microphone you can use to record an audio-only comment. If you do not have a microphone or camera, feel free to respond by typing; written language has worked well enough for thousands of years.

In addition to recording your video, feel free to insert photos, link to a website about something you like, etc. Have fun with this assignment!

Email sent about 3 weeks before the semester started to introduce the assignment:

Dear students,

Welcome to [Course Name]! I am really excited about this course. Our course is now live [website] – check it out!

I wanted to let you all know that your first assignment involves you introducing us to your family. This assignment is due 11 am the first day of classes, right before our class. To do the assignment, download the Canvas app on your phone, log in, navigate to our course and the discussion board post “Assignment 1: Introduce Yourself with a Video” and use the “arrow” button in the top right hand corner to record a short video where you introduce yourself to the rest of us. And, since we are all going to see our families over the break, introduce your family too!
