Artifacts

Everyday we face challenges or experiences that alter our personal development. Usually, these are small occurrences that play a role into something in the long run, but sometimes something can seem to alter one’s development almost immediately. This happened for me the fall of my sophomore year in high school. I was used to school being something I didn’t have to give a second thought to. Tests were just things I seemed to be able to utilize intuition or common sense to do well on and homework was merely a task of completion. I faced a rude awaken in my Honors Algebra II class when I started doing poorly on quizzes and tests. It was something I didn’t acknowledge at first, but finally, I received a grade of 59% on a test and knew I needed to change something. I started studying everyday and doing the homework to help me better understand the material. I asked questions in class and got help from my peers. Before tests or quizzes, I made myself study guides and reviewed them thoroughly. This type of dedication allowed me to earn an A as my final grade, but it also shaped my work ethic for everything concerning academics.

This experience not only allowed me to do well in that one class for the one year, but it set the foundation for the rest of my high school career and also my college career thus far. I continue those study habits and keep the same motivation that I developed from this. School is something I directly work towards, not passively complete. I dedicate time and effort with the goal of doing well because I know how much it hurts to fail. But, it shows me that sometimes it takes failing to truly excel beyond what you would’ve without it. knowing that, I am able to handle failure as an opportunity for growth. I learned that I am resilient, hard-working, and have perseverance. These skills are something I try to maintain for the sake of my current and future success, and I owe it to my academic artifact.

About Me

My name is Elise Jurkovich and I am an Engineering student at The Ohio State University. I am currently undeclared within the program but am very interested in Materials Science Engineering and Industrials and Systems Engineering. Growing up, I have always enjoyed math, science, and being creative so I am excited to apply these skills and interests to my major. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics play a huge role in my everyday college life due to the classes I am currently taking. But, they also have always been especially interesting to me due to their complexity and usefulness to every aspect of life. Additionally, I am  interested in pursuing a business minor so that I can be flexible in the workplace with my technical degree. I  hope to continue in the STEM EE Scholars program and also build onto my academic experiences throughout my years in college. The end goal is finding a job after graduation, and whatever that may be, I plan to utilize Ohio State’s resources to do so.
