Artifact #3

My artifact for this year is my red nursing scrubs. I have wanted to be accepted into the nursing program at OSU for many years, and finally having a tangible item to mark this accomplishment has left me with a feeling of pride. Each time I saw another student in these same red nursing scrubs during my freshman year, I felt excitement and it drove me to keep working hard so that I too could wear these scrubs one day as well. I hope that my wearing of these same scrubs help another pre-nursing student stay motivated just as they did for me. I look forward to walking around campus and throughout the hospital in these red scrubs, as they portray my hard work to get into the college of nursing. I believe this feeling of pride while wearing my scrubs will last the entirety of my time here in the college of nursing, and I look forward to displaying my accomplishment and all I learn in the college while wearing my red scrubs.

Artifact #2

This semester, I am taking an Anatomy course for the first time. Some may find the subject dry, but I find it very interesting and, quite frankly, astonishing how much goes into each human body. This past week, I attended Anatomy lab and got to see my first human cadaver. Although most may find this unpleasant and maybe even disturbing, I saw it as my first real step into my desired career path. Since last semester consisted of majority general education courses, this Anatomy course is one of the first classes I have been able to take that aligns and relates to my interests and desired career. In addition to learning more about the human anatomy, I was learning more about myself and felt at ease knowing that my intended nursing path is the right decision. With the introduction to this human cadaver, I realized that I have a deep interest in the sciences, especially the way we all work as humans. I know that from here on out as a Pre-Nursing and hopefully eventually Nursing major, I will be delving into knowledge that will continue to inspire and excite me as a student. I look forward to continuing my education in these intriguing subjects that will help me to be a strong nurse in the future.

About Me

My name is Lilly Joyce and I am from Akron, Ohio. I am currently in the pre-nursing program here at Ohio State. I intend to be admitted into the nursing school next semester, which is my principle goal at this point in time. I have always taken an interest in science courses, especially biology. This interest, as well as exposure to the nursing profession through family, volunteering, and shadowing opportunities, led me to my pursuit of a nursing degree. Eventually, I plan on becoming a Nurse Practitioner after my undergraduate education. I am interested in working with either infants or children because I have found I am particularly skilled at working with these age groups. Another option I am considering is working with people with disabilities. I have developed a passion for working with people with disabilities through different volunteer programs and can see this as a potential career path for me as well. In order to achieve my goal of receiving admission into the nursing school, I have the goal of maintaining a strong GPA these next four years of undergraduate education while also obtaining leadership positions in my Mount scholars program and on the club tennis team. In addition to these goals, I intend to continue with volunteer work either in a nearby hospital or through clubs at Ohio State.

Year in Review

Over the course of this past year, I have encountered many positive, along with some negative, experiences that have allowed me to truly grow as a student and overall person. In terms of academics, I feel that I have put my best foot forward in my studies, which has ultimately paid off. I feel more disciplined than ever when it comes to my schoolwork, and I am proud of the effort I have put into my studies. I believe having a goal of being admitted into the Nursing program at OSU held me more accountable for doing well in my courses and this has had a positive influence in the way I go about my work. From this, I will go into future years of schooling, and life in general, with specific goals in mind to keep me on the right track and motivated. Additionally, I found that surrounding myself with like-minded people who also take their studies seriously kept me disciplined as well.

As an overall person, my first year experience at Ohio State, although cut short, has allowed me to figure myself out more than ever before. I have a better handle on my likes, dislikes, goals and aspirations, and how I want to go about my life– at least for the foreseeable future. I have found people that have added so many positive aspects to my life, and I am very grateful for that. I have a renewed love for learning and absorbing all the information I can. I have been allowed the opportunity, through both Mount Leadership and other organizations/clubs, to put myself out there and grow in my leadership skills. I am especially grateful for these opportunities, as this is an aspect of my life in which I know I can and want to continue to grow. All in all, I am extremely satisfied with the results of my first year, the progress I have made as a scholar, leader, and person, and I look forward to learning from future experiences at OSU and beyond.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: As a nursing student here at OSU, there are not many options for studying abroad due to the required courses and clinical schedule. Alternatively, there are opportunities to go abroad over various breaks throughout the academic year to do service with the skills we learn as nursing students. I am looking forward to attending one of these trips at some point as an upperclassmen. I want to understand othe healthcare systems and cultures as a whole of other countries, and expect to learn a great deal during one of these service trips.
  • Original Inquiry: Beyond the classroom I am taking part in a research study for type 1 diabetes. As a type 1 diabetic myself, this subject holds quite a bit of significance with me. This opportunity will give me much more education on the research process, a complex process that I am not fluent with yet. I look forward to learning more about this, but also working with and learning from other successful adults in the healthcare field.
  • Academic Enrichment: The nursing curriculum is challenging in and of itself, and I most definitely feel academically challenged already during my first semester of being in the program. Outside of the classroom (or zoom room, I should say), I try to apply my knowledge in everyday occurrences. I also practice skills regularly. Also, my research opportunity is providing me with a plethora of knowledge as well.
  • Leadership Development: Currently, I am on the executive board for my club tennis team as the service chair. This semester is a little different in terms of everything being online and there not being a need for our club to participate in service, but I look forward next semester or next year when I can implement more of my ideas for service. With this position, I also am able to work on being a leader by effectively communicating my thoughts and ideas, planning in great detail, and working with others.
  • Service Engagement: I am currently involved with an online tutoring program where I meet two days a week with a young boy who needs some extra help with his schoolwork. I am excited to continue working with him and providing not only help with his schooling, but also providing him with another person to connect with during these times of isolation. Although it is work with only one person, I do believe it will make a difference to the boy I tutor.

Career

In the past, I have volunteered at Akron Children’s Hospital for a period of time, which was a truly valuable experience that enabled me to see more of the hospital and interact with patients and their families. I was lucky enough to be able to sit with a few patients while their family was out, and this small amount of time spent with them only cemented my desire to pursue a career in patient care, especially with pediatrics. Most of my summer job experiences involved coaching tennis to young children all the way up to older adults. I value these experiences where I was able to help develop peoples’ tennis skills as it also allowed me to develop my own teaching skills that I can bring into my career as a nurse. A significant part of being a nurse is being able to educate the patients we take care of, and I know that I have acquired this skill of teaching from my past job experiences. I have the patience and determination that is required of a teacher, as well as the enthusiasm to help others help themselves. I look forward to learning much more from future job experiences as a patient care associate in the hospital, and am excited to gain more practical skills from this position that I will need to use for the rest of my career.

Artifacts

During the summer going into my senior year of high school, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to Italy with my Latin class. This experience was important to me as it was the first time I had ever been overseas independently, but more importantly I was able to learn about history as well as another culture. Over the course of ten days, we visited Rome and Florence. In these cities, we were able to visit different museums, churches, and other major landmarks. In addition to learning about the history of these cities and monuments, I interacted with people from all over the world.  I came away from this trip with a strong eagerness to travel more and learn about not only history of other cities and countries, but how other cultures function.
This experience sparked an interest for traveling abroad at some point in my college career, and it allowed me to have a greater appreciation for other cultures. Additionally, this newfound interest in other cultures has made me realize that I want to study a foreign culture within the next three years at Ohio State. Overall, this experience has allowed me to grow in narrowing my academic interests and mature as an individual.
