Service Engagement

I hope to volunteer with children and teens in the community, specifically those with special needs. This is something I did during high school, almost every weekend, through an organization called Friendship Circle. I think small connections between college students and kids in elementary and middle school can have a huge benefit for everyone involved. As people get older, we tend to identify ourselves with individuals of the same age – forgetting that we were once younger. I believe by fostering these relationships with special needs children in specific, we can better understand one another and how we all contribute to society.

Leadership Development

I am on the OSU mock trial team this year, which is an activity that I greatly enjoyed doing during high school. I am learning to balance my coursework with the requirements of the team – which has been challenging. I’ve grown from it and continue to learn time management skills. In the future, I hope to share these skills with my peers and incoming freshmen, perhaps by becoming one of the board members for the club. Additionally, I would love to develop my leadership skills by becoming a Chemistry TA next year. I love chemistry and believe it would enhance my social skills and efficiency in communication.

Academic Enrichment

Generally speaking, I want to go into the profession of Neurolaw. In my current classes, I get to learn how the brain works and how people think, as well as how their cognitive processes change over time. At the same time, I am a member of the OSU Mock Trial team, and constantly learning how the legal system works from an insider’s point of view. I plan to declare a double major in neuroscience and film production and then attend law school. Film production may seem entirely unrelated, and it is, but I truly love to create films. Further, I believe that video is an excellent medium for effective and creative communication – an incredibly important life skill.

Original Inquiry

I hope to do research in the behavioral neuroscience area – I’ve been interested in this subject for some time now. I hope to learn more about neural plasticity in the adult brain. I have also taken the time to be creative outside of class by beginning to play the guitar. This project has given me the chance to take care of myself emotionally and to focus my energy on something non-academic. Along those lines, I hope to join an organization on campus that focuses on the guitar and making music! I would love to start a band with some friends one day.

Global Awareness

Moving to America at a young age from England has contributed greatly to my appreciation of other cultures and ideas. I hope to expand my traveling to more than English speaking countries, hopefully through the STEP program! I want to be able to travel to a country that will open my eyes to what other people’s living situations are and learn how to help them in the future. Before I travel, I think I’d like to join a student organization involving international relations – hopefully giving me the chance to learn more before visiting another country. In the next four years, I would love to take classes related to other religions and cultures – I believe this will help me grow.
