About Me

A little bit about me…

Personal

My name is Kayla Jones and I am from Cincinnati, OH. I attended Turpin High School starting in the fall of 2016 and graduated (virtually) in May 2020. While this was not the high school conclusion I was hoping for, I am beyond thankful for the opportunities I was able to take part in. My notable academic activities will be listed below in the Academic section of this post. Hover over the images below to learn about a few of my impactful non-academic high school experiences.  With this ePortfolio, I intend to document my college experiences. By the time I graduate, I look forward to having a single location where I can look back on all of my notable experiences.

This is an image after I ran my first half marathon called the Queen Bee in Cincinnati, OH, October 2019. I did Cross Country, Track, and Soccer in high school, but decided to train on my own for a half marathon fall of my Senior year. Due to COVID I have not been able to run another but I still run in my free time!

My Family

This is an image of my family at Devil’s Tower National Park in Wyoming in the Summer of 2020. With COVID restrictions, we decided to go on a camping trip out West through multiple national parks instead of traveling to an area with lots of tourists. Pictured are my mom, dad, and younger sister Katherine (17-Junior in High School)

I am in college to prepare myself for a successful career in the engineering field. Specifically, through coursework, research, and co-ops, I intend to stimulate my problem solving abilities and meet peers and mentors to facilitate my personal growth.

When it came to choosing a major, I initially chose Biomedical Engineering. However, a summer vacation through multiple national parks inspired my choice to change my pre-major to Food, Agricultural, Biological, and Ecological Engineering on the Biological Systems Track, which I was admitted to in December 2020. I am still passionate about innovations in the medical field (genetics specifically), but am curious to study bioengineering in a non-medical context as well. I have not officially declared a minor yet, but am interested in Molecular Genetics and/or CSE.

To date, the most significant extra-curricular I am involved in at OSU is the Society of Women Engineers. Through this organization, I have met most of my friends and learned a lot. It has been very helpful to have role models and networking abilities so early in my college career.

I realized my passion for biology and human anatomy and was able take classes, go to summer camps, and go on field trips to learn and explore these ideas. Hover over the images below for descriptions of a few highlights in my high school experience.

Women In Engineering 2019 Summer Camp

This is an image from the Banquet celebrating the end of a week long Women In Engineering Summer Camp that I took part in through the University of Cincinnati as a rising senior in High School. I was exposed to many different engineering disciplines and took tours of different companies like P&G, Ethicon, GE, and many others. We were also divided in teams and designed an Innovative Design to be implemented at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

Medical Interventions Coursework
____________________________
This image is from one of many dissections I performed in a Project Lead the Way high school course titled Medical Interventions. I am pictured here with two other lab mates after we had removed the intact brain from a fetal pig. Also in this course, we performed ELISA testing, bacterial growth labs, and learned many other essential lab techniques.

To pursue my interests in coding and genetics, I intend to minor in one or both of these areas. Regardless, I will take related classes as electives to explore ideas and increase my knowledge level.

Professional

In the future, I intend to work in industry or research. I want to contribute to revolutionary innovations that benefit the common good. In high school, I started working at a local business called Pinecone Home, where I assembled, painted, packed, and shipped various products. These duties have since evolved. I now am in charge of customer communication on multiple social media platforms including email messages. Here, I have learned soft skills of communicating effectively and kindly with individuals of all types of diverse backgrounds. Additionally, I have been tasked with photography for the business, so perform photo shoots for marketing and our website. A third newer task has been teaching and managing new employees.

Through my engineering career, I intend to impact the future by using my soft skills to make science, and more generally the STEM fields, understandable and accessible. Additionally, I want to be on the forefront of personalized medicine and purse the overlap of genetics and coding.

Civic

I am passionate about equal opportunity. I believe that everyone should be given an equal chance to be successful and beyond that it is up to the individual. I am not actively involved in any volunteer organizations, but am working towards a degree that will allow me to give back to a larger community.
