Module 7

Taking this online strategy class this summer has really helped tremendously with my online learning skills. Over this summer I was able to greatly increase my knowledge on, online sources. Before taking this class I had knowledge of some sights and other things but never fully explored the web like I should have. One thing I learned was how to properly do research. To effectively do research there are many search engines that you can use. The most common which I also use is Google. Google gives you a lot of ability to narrow searches down to only get exactly what you want. You search by types of documents, websites or news papers. You can also search by dates and times which can really come in handy. If you are searching for a primary source and you know exactly when it was published this will help you a lot. Effectively researching and finding sources can save you a lot of time in the back end. You won’t waste your time going through sources that will be no help to you. It also helps if you are writing a paper because you can get direct information rather than a source that might be all over the place with information that will cause you to have to sort through it. Another big topic I learned about was studying. Sometimes studying on your own may not always be the best choice if you find yourself needing help with what to study you can always use the internet as a resource to do these things. There are many websites out there with plenty of tips and guides to help you with studying. Many of them let you pick if you want to watch a video or read the material to help best fit your learning style and ability. There are web sites out there for memorization techniques like Studystack.com. This website in particular has quite a few topics to quiz on including topics for specific majors. I myself struggle with time management and Mindtools.com is great for helping plan out things. It gives you options to plan out different types of assignments like projects or big research papers that you may need help planning out. From taking this course I was able to learn quite a bit about myself. Before taking this class I knew I was bad at time management and with procrastination but the online surveys actually broke my levels of time management and procrastination down. I also gained ideas on what to do in certain situations to help myself. This has also made me more aware to myself so i look out for it more. My most meaningful experience was doing the blog post on Carmen. I know I will have classes in the future that will require me to make blog post so getting to do that now really helps and I’ll know what to do in the future. I will be applying my research skills to classes I take from now on and I will be a better writer because of it. I will also pay more attention to time management in the fall.

Module 6

Doing research on a topic can be troublesome at times. There is so much information out there on the internet that it can be hard to tell what’s reliable or not and also to narrow results down to what you need specifically. In the end effective research skills are very important to have and will always be helpful.

Note Taking Strategies

Being able to take good notes is very important in college. Everybody has their own personal technique on taking notes which you will need. If you have problems with note taking there are always other options to look into. There are many techniques that can be found on the internet. If you are a visual leaner, a good note taking strategy making a mind map. You start with the main idea in the middle of your paper and can expand in all direction to add information, drawings or any other information you feel necessary. If you learn by remember a word or phrase you may want to use the key word method. You can take the most important word or phrase out of a reading and elaborate on it. You have to create three total columns and the second one is where you would add details and the fourth is for supporting material. A third way and also the one I find most affective is the Cornell Method. There are five stages to this note taking style. First you record your notes on one side of a two column table. Next you recall key words or statements on the left side of the table. Third you recite main facts and ideas from the columns to help you remember them. Then you reflect and lastly review. Any technique can be easy to use for an individual person; my advice is just to make sure you have one.

Educational Videos

The video I decided to watch was a timeline of the Civil War. It went battle by battle giving specific times and dates of the battles of the Civil War. Every battle was very important and had an effect on the end of the war. For example, the confederates won the battle at Chancellorsville but one of their best generals were killed which weakened their army. The most important event that happened, which was backed by other previous victories was the Union soldiers gaining access to Petersburg Virginia.

I found this video to be a great way to learn about the Civil War. This specific war has so much history behind it and events and battles that took place that it is hard to always remember everything. This video gives in depth look at dates battles and even the generals leading during battles. This helps a lot and also being able to actually see a map that shows routes took and places where battles were fought. In all this video is very helpful and I would definitely recommend it.
