Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: To work towards this portion of the Honors and Scholar’s G.O.A.L.S. I would really like to study abroad. I’m not totally sure when or where yet, but I think that Europe is where I will end up mostly because it is the area of the world that I’m most interested in going to. Though I also think that going to somewhere in Asia or Africa could provide a really good learning experience for me as I am much less familiar with the culture. I also think that being a history major and focusing on other parts of the world for that degree will really contribute to this area of the G.O.A.L.S.. I am not interested in American history so that really makes me look at other areas of the world and learn about their history and cultures, which I find to be really fulfilling.
  • Original Inquiry: Personally I think that I will contribute to this concept through undergraduate research as I am really excited to start looking for those opportunities. I think that it is such a critical part of being at a research institution, and Ohio State has great research opportunities for the Humanities fields. I also fully intend to take rigorous courses as I progress through my degree because that will allow me to do more research work on my own as well.
  • Academic Enrichment: I truly enjoy taking challenging courses and always have. Even with the start of this year (Freshman year) I am already challenging myself by taking an Honors class despite not being in the honors program. Additionally, I jumped right into my major due to the rigorous course work that I took in High school. I find course work to be one of the places where I really enjoy pushing myself because as long as I set aside the time I need to do it I will find value in the work. I’m really looking forward to the classes that I will get to take in the future because of this.
  • Leadership Development: I’m trying to join as many co-curriculars as I can while also continuing the sport that I have done since I was extremely little. I hope that when I find the clubs and organizations that I want to be apart of I can eventually take leadership roles that I am really passionate about. Additionally, I ride horses and am member of the Huntseat Equestrian Club team here at the university  so hopefully I will eventually hold a leadership role in that. Along with that I will continue to gain leadership experience with my job outside of school.
  • Service Engagement: I have always participated in community service opportunities through various clubs and my sport and fully intend to continue with that in college. Additionally, I would like to find organizations that I’m passionate about and start to do community service in that respect. I also think getting involved on campus will help me to get involved with the community and lead to more service opportunities.

Career

Mentor Interview

I interviewed my PSL Mentor Christen Hill this past week. My goal going into the interview was a candid conversation and not a real journalistic interview, which I achieved. For background Christen is originally from Beavercreek Ohio, and is a second year marketing major. When I asked why she picked marketing she said it was due to an interest in business that she’s always had. I then asked her about why she chose PSL to which she responded that she was always interested in politics and it allowed her to expand other interests while she was at school. Christen discussed how she really enjoyed the PSL seminar field-trips her first semester. She went on to say that her favorite ones had to either be the jail as it was interesting to see the process and what it is truly like, or the Franklin county court. Christen also went onto say that she is also in the morrill scholarship program (msp) which has brought her some of her closest friends and more diversity in her college experience. Overall she has been really excited about the opportunities that she has been able to explore here at Ohio State.

About Me

Hi, my name is Madeline Johnson but I go by Maddie. I am currently a Freshman at Ohio State majoring in history, but I plan on adding a second major in Politics, philosophy, and economics as well as a judicial politics minor. I’m a Politics, Society, and Law scholar (PSL) on top of that, which I have hopes will expand my knowledge and allow me to get more involved. My future plans with all of this is law school due to my massive interest in international law though I might also pursue a Ph.D program at the same time. I think that education is extremely important and can’t wait to continue to learn as much as I can and expand my interests.

Beyond that I’m originally from Bexley Ohio and attended Bexley High School where I was extremely involved both inside and outside of school. I was a member of JCL, Model UN, and 4-H. Additionally, I held board potions in all of those clubs for at least two years if not more.

Outside of academics I am a competitive equestrian and on the Huntseat Equestrian Club team as well as showing on my own. It is something that I have been doing since I was little and have no intentions of quitting at this point. I’m also trying to get involved with other things across campus and I’m slowly joining other clubs.
