Group of six colleagues having a team meeting

Having good professional references can make or break a job offer. Choose references that you trust. They should be able to attest to your skills, accomplishments and work ethic in your current or past positions.

Tips for References:

  • Provide references upon request (usually when the employer is down to the final candidates or is ready to make an offer)
  • Have 3 professional references ready when you apply for a position
  • Ask your professional references for their permission before you include their name and contact information on a reference sheet or application
  • Include their name, address, phone number, e-mail address, your relationship
  • Header- use the same header as your resume and cover letter to be consistent
  • Sample reference sheet
