You should be prepared to answer basic interview questions about your skills and experiences, as well as behavioral questions. In these behavior-based questions, the employer will likely ask you to describe an example of a time when you exhibited a particular behavior. The STAR technique is the best way to answer these questions. You should also be prepared to ask questions to your prospective employer.

STAR Technique for Behavioral Interview Questions:

  • Situation- Describe the background of your story. What problem or challenge was presented?
  • Task- Describe the goal. What did you need to accomplish?
  • Action- Describe what actions you performed to address the issue or help the situation
  • Result- What were the results of your actions?

Tips for In-Person Interviews:

  • Business professional dress and accessories
  • Arrive at least 20 minutes early
  • Be prepared
    • Know your experiences and qualifications, strengths and weaknesses
    • Do your research on the organization and demonstrate this knowledge
  • Bring copies of your cover letter and resume
  • Have a pen and paper to take notes
  • Develop a list of several questions to ask the employer towards the end of the interview
  • Be aware of your body language
  • Do not discuss salary- reserve this conversation for when an offer is made
  • Send a thank you note or e-mail after the interview
