Project 1 update (DL) week 4

I finished research for my artist, Jasper Johns. I found a really good video talking about his work as well as a book where he has a chapter dedicated to him. I have decided that I will write about 3 of his artworks, Flag, Maps, and 0-9.

Artist Research (DL)

Jasper Johns

What materials are they using? Is their work 2D (drawing/painting) or 3D (sculpture)?

• Jasper Johns is a painter, print maker, and sculptor. This means he works with both 2d and 3D pieces. He works in the pop, abstract and expressionism field when he paints and prints. When he sculpts he starts with wax adding more complex textures on top of the wax. His 2d works involved painting, collages, sketching, and printing.

What emotions or feelings do you get from looking at their work?

• When I look at is work such as his many flag pieces i can tell he is a patriotic person yet all of these paintings also seem rustic with the shading and strokes used. This could show the patriotic feeling he had, but it is no longer because the country is changing more. The rustic flag losing its bright red and blue colors shows how much the country has changed, but one thing has stayed the same: the flag. The flag will always be the same and a symbol of freedom. The other drawings he has such as the several number related ones shows organization and gives off a very calm feeling. Almost as if everything is put in its place perfectly.

How does their mark-making or use of line in their work evoke that feeling?

• The very straight dark overlapping lines of the works of Jasper Johns relating to numbers gives off a clam vibe. He does this by the lines nearly being perfect, dark and overlapping. Looking at 0 through 9 you can see every number yet at the sam time none at all. It shows the consept of perception and when you focus on one number you feel at peace yet looking it as a whole makes you feel in a chaotic state of mind. The flag paintings with the visible strokes makes it feel more vintage. It looks as if the flag is old and each painting he does the flag gets older and older. The flag gets less and less vibrant until it is fully white.

Above is a picture of me practicing the techniques my artist uses in his art work.
