10/15 Artifact

An artifact that aptly describes my first semester academic and extracurricular experience is this photo of Undergraduate Student Government from the Ohio State Homecoming Parade. I currently serve as a representative in the Academic Affairs committee, and this involvement marks one of the most profound intersections of my academic and extracurricular interests. I have long since had an interest in politics and when combined with my love for getting involved, Student Council provided the perfect outlet in high school. At Ohio State, I hoped to continue this involvement and joining Undergraduate Student Government, particularly the Academic Affairs committee, remains one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. As a Human Resources major, much of my time here will be spent examining how to most effectively use human capital and resolve interpersonal differences—working as a committee representative to enrich the academic experience of every undergraduate on this campus is certainly an effective, hands-on way to do that. Additionally, the look at the bureaucratic networks and the business-government relationship that the university has is fascinating, as I am also pursuing a degree in public management through the Glenn School. Altogether, Undergraduate Student Government is a rewarding, challenging extracurricular that combines my academic interests with my passion for getting involved and doing good.

Year in Review

I’ve grown mainly in my interest areas–though I knew I wanted to pursue degrees in Business and Public Affairs, it was not until this year that I realized my main interests were human capital and education policy. I’ve long been passionate about education, but higher education policy was an area I didn’t realize that I had such a keen interest in. I also got involved on campus, which was one of my goals starting the year. However, I think I have a lot of room to grow in budgeting and prioritizing my time, which is my main goal next year.

This is a picture of the Undergraduate Student Government’s Academic Affairs leadership for the 2017-2018 year. USG has been an integral part of my experience at Ohio State, and I am so honored to be taking a bigger role in advocating for students through my role as Deputy Director. I will specifically be working in regards to collaboration with other bodies within USG and the University itself. Education policy, specifically higher ed policy, has really revealed itself to be an area that I am passionate about and I am excited to see how my interest in the area grows and changes in the coming year.

About Me

I am a firm believer in the maxim that you get 12119130_767081323398344_548742732956197949_nout of something only what you put into it. As someone who has had a lifelong love of learning, my next four years at The Ohio State University will be spent putting in time and hard work to get a comprehensive, marketable, and advanced education that will serve as a springboard for a life spent working in the fields that fascinate and intrigue me.

I am currently a first-year in the Fisher College of Business, pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration and studying within the Department of Management and Human Resources with a specific focus on international labor and negotiation. I am hoping to supplement these studies with a Bachelor of Arts in Management, Leadership, and Policy from the Glenn College of Public Affairs with a particular focus on public management, where I will take courses that help make sense of the legal environment in which public organizations operate. I also plan to pursue either the Global Option in Business or Global Option in Public Affairs degree designation program that Fisher and Glenn offer during my four years here at Ohio State, as I hope to have an internationally-focused career and believe a global understanding of the fields I hope to work in will only enhance my marketability and practical skills. Participating in either Global Option program will require taking classes that expose me to other cultures and participating in co-curricular programs such as Global Labs or study abroad programs that allow me to gain hands-on experience working and learning in a global setting. Additionally, I plan to pursue a minor in either Organizational Communication or City and Regional Planning, two interests of mine readily available to study through the Department of Communication and the Knowlton School of Architecture respectively.

After graduating from Ohio State, I plan to attend law school and study either international labor law or municipal law, hoping to eventually work for either an international firm or as corporate counsel for a large city. Ideally, I would like to attend a joint-degree JD/MPA program, which would prepare me for examining law in a governmental context and connect legal institutions to societal realities.

To succeed in this, I will need to spend my undergraduate career honing my reading, writing, and analytical skills. I hope to take classes in composition, language, speech, and logic during my time at Ohio State. My ultimate goal for my years here at Ohio State is to do the things I love, and do them well. I’ve always had a deep-set passion for ethics, business, public affairs, and world politics. With the resources at Ohio State, I hope to continue to immerse myself in these topics academically and co-curricularly with the ultimate goal of pursuing a law degree after graduation.

I hope to do this through not only taking challenging and engaging classes in these subjects, but also participating in extracurriculars such as USG, the Collegiate Council on World Affairs, FisherInk, the Civic Leadership Council, and PassGo to further immerse myself them outside of the classroom and gain hands-on experience.

I believe the only way to make the most out of one’s college experience is to fully immerse yourself into it, and I wholeheartedly plan to do that. I want to add to the tradition, honor, and excellence found at Ohio State and spend my time here making great friends, memories, and connections that I will keep for the rest of my life.
