Artifacts- (Space Camp)

When I was in fourth grade my grade school held a school wide essay writing competition, judged by NASA engineers, for a chance to win a trip to space camp.  I had always been interested in science and decided to write an essay and ended up winning.  I would say that this experience was probably one of the single most influential experiences in my childhood which steered me towards engineering.  I can say with certainty that without this experience I would not be where I am today.

About Me

Hello, my name is Bobby Jennings.  I have a younger brother who is a sophomore in high school back in Cincinnati, and 2 younger sisters who are both in 8th grade.  My mom is a substitute teacher at my sisters’ grade school and when she is not doing that she is taking care of our 3 month old golden retriever.  Over the summer my dad bought a small prototyping company which he runs everyday.  I find the work that his company does to be fascinating since I love mechanical things and building things with my hands.  I am majoring in mechanical engineering and plan on minoring in computer science and nanotechnology physics.  I am constantly coming up with ideas for inventions or improvements to existing technologies and I hope my college degree will help me to capitalize on some of these ideas.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: During my time in grade school and high school I have taken 2 trips out of the country, one to Germany, and one to Mexico.  In the seventh grade I participated in a cultural exchange program with a school in Germany where the German students lived with us for 2 weeks and then we traveled to Germany to live with them for 2 weeks.  While this trip was a lot of fun and I made a lot of friends, it was not nearly as fulfilling as my mission trip to Mexico.  Between my junior and senior years of high school I participated in a school mission trip program to Nogales, Mexico where we helped out at a soup kitchen for those who had been recently deported or were seeking asylum in the US.  Talking to these people and hearing their stories made me want to do more trips like this, when I am off school, to help those who are less fortunate than me.
  • Original Inquiry: For as long as I can remember I have been interested in 2 things: learning how things work and building things.  I want to use these 2 interests to participate in undergraduate research in either physics or mechanical engineering. I think both of these fields could be interesting as long as I can find a topic I am interested in and a researcher who is passionate about their work.  I am particularly interested in nanotechnology.  I am really excited to learn more about nanotech as I progress through my courses and I feel very strongly that it will play a massive role in medicine in the future.
  • Academic Enrichment: The courses I plan to take reflect my intentions to work in robotics, particularly nano-robotics, since I plan to major in mechanical engineering with a double minor in nanotechnology physics and computer science.  I have known since the 4th grade that I wanted to go into mechanical engineering since I have always had a fascination with taking things apart to learn how they work and then putting them back together.  Another long running interest of mine has been computer science.  In the 8th grade I had some free time before school started every day and decided to learn HTML and CSS.  Since then I have taken 5 computer science classes in high school which gave me a solid understanding of Java.  More recently I have become fascinated with the usage of nanotechnology in medicine and think that a minor in nanotechnology physics would be a great step towards entering the field.
  • Leadership Development: This year I have decided to become involved with the Archer-Torres-Blackwell-Drackett community council where I serve as the vice president, Baja SAE, club Rugby, and the first year leadership initiative.  On community council and the first year leadership initiative I learn about new ways and techniques in which to lead.  When I participate in Baja SAE and Rugby I can put these skills into effect when I lead the other freshmen.  I plan to expend my involvement to other organizations, such as archery club, as well once Covid restrictions permit in-person meetings.
  • Service Engagement: Currently I am involved in service through Metro High School.  I tutor two math classes and a computer science class three days a week.  This experience has been great for me because I feel like I am actually providing a tangible benefit to the students.  It is incredibly gratifying to have students come in to a break out room with a problem they cannot seem to get and then see them leave with a firm grasp on whatever concept they did not understand coming in to the break out room.  Once Covid restrictions relax I would also like to help out at Habitat for Humanity.  I did this my senior year of high school and really enjoyed it since I have two years of experience doing residential renovation work and have been working with my hands since I was little.  I also would love to do this now that I’m 18 because I will now be allowed to use power tools meaning I can bring all my tools from my workshop to do much more meaningful work in the house.

Artifacts- (West Point Leadership Conference)

My junior year of high school I was selected to represent my school at West Point Society of Cincinnati Leadership and Ethics Seminar.  This experience was very impactful to me because it helped me to look at leadership as an opportunity to help everyone achieve their common goals if I could guide everyone in the right direction.  Throughout my time in high school and beginning college I have had multiple leadership experiences such as being captain of my high school’s rugby team.
