My First semester at OSU

The main fears I had before I began college were that I would be unable to have a good enough balance with school and extracurricular. However, as this year has progressed, I have learned how to properly balance both of these things. I was also afraid that I would not be able to hold the same academic level I had initially hoped for. This became apparent as I did not fully manage my time as well as I could have. As a result, I was unable to achieve quite as well as I had hoped for in many of my classes. However, I will continue to work hard as my year progresses, and hopefully I will be able to achieve above a 3.5, which was my goal at the beginning of the year. As far as the Humanities Scholars, I have greatly enjoyed my time with them so far. Unfortunately, due to my commitments as an Evans Scholar, and as a cross country runner, I have not been able to be as involved as I had initially wished for. However, I do look forward to having more time available for me to spend with the Humanities scholars in the coming years. As I continue on my OSU experience, I hope that I will have the ability to keep learning more and more each day about not only the subjects that interest me, but also about myself. If I am able to do this, I will have a greater confidence in myself, and I will be able to continue to achieve more and more. With the Humanities Scholars, I hope to gain more and more friendship, while being able to be involved in the many things going on within their community. In all, I have had a very fun and successful first semester at OSU, and I hope that I will be able to not only achieve the same level of success that I currently have, but that I will be able to do this while meeting new people and having new experiences.

Humans of OSU

Answering what what is the purpose of life.

“I believe that the purpose of life is to live to an appropriate moral standard, and to have fun. As long as both of these are kept in an appropriate balance, life can not only be lived well, but be lived with purpose. Once this balance is achieved, one can begin to focus on how best to ponder our own existence, and find the answers to that.”

Artifacts

I was very intrigued by my strengths quest test, as it gave me insight as to what I might actually think and care about. An examination such as this is very useful because it allows for a proper analysis of one’s basic human thoughts without said person having to delve to deeply into their own sub-conscious. My strengths were being restorative, having input, having beliefs, being an includer, and finally harmony. I am not very surprised by the results to my strengths finder test because I feel that I strive to make what have become my strengths part of my identity. I do try to be restorative, as well as hold strong beliefs in my religious faith. I was impressed that I had the ability to express these beliefs simply in my responses to a certain test. I currently use my strength as being restorative mainly in the house I am living in. With many different people from many different backgrounds living together, I often find it to be my job to make sure everyone continues to treat each other nicely. I enjoy this process not because of all the anger, but because of the end result, which is hopefully everyone being kind and respectful to each other. I use my next strength of input also in this role, as I like to see arguments, and how they begin. I like to analyze what exactly makes certain people act certain ways, as well as different ways that the argument can be resolved. My next strength of belief is something that I am surprised is not my number one belief. I am a very strong practicing Catholic, and I hold all of the principles of the Catholic Church very close to my heart. I have always practiced this way, and I plan to continue to in the near future. My next strength of being an includer was used the most by me my senior year of high school when I was elected cross country team captain. I worked hard to include many of the younger guys in team activities by giving rides, and even calling their parents and asking for permission. I was always happy when the whole team could be together for events. My final strength of harmony shows forth in all my previous strengths, as I like to include everyone, and I want to resolve conflict between others. As such, harmony is very key to my personalities.

My First Week at OSU

My first week at OSU was full of excitement and dread. I loved my first day living on campus, and bonded very well

with my roommate, and those living on my floor. I also got to meet the Cross Country team, of which I am a member,

and go on my first run as a buckeye. As the week progressed I attended the student involvement fair, and was happy

to see almost 10 of my friends from high school walking around, who I got to introduce to the others from my dorm. I

was very excited to join many clubs, and joined many volunteer clubs along with the Pro-Life club. In all of this, I

always felt so overwhelmed. I felt like there were so many people around me that I may never even lay eyes on again.

However, this filled me with a great appreciation for OSU. I love how big the school is, and all the people within it.

What better way to meet others of entirely different cultures and customs, and to learn from their life experiences. As

I began classes, it struck me by just how large and small certain classes could be. While some were huge, like my

Food Science class with 240 kids, and some small, like my School and Society class of 29 kids, the university showed

its true colors to me. With all these connections already made with those close to me, as well as those I have yet to

make, I am really looking forward to the rest of my freshman year, and all it has to offer. My only fear remains

managing my time. With all the course work, along with the expectations placed on me as an Ohio State athlete, and

those of being a Humanities Scholar, I hope I am able to properly manage my commitments, while preforming to the

best of my ability. I have certainly not picked the easiest path at OSU, but I enjoy being busy, even when that leads to

stress with homework. I anticipate that I will have an overall positive experience at Ohio State, while meeting many

new friends, and enjoying many different experiences. I hope I am able to grow as a person on my way to becoming a

teacher, so that I will one day be able to offer my students the ability to learn from my life, in all that encompasses.
