Flying Kite

Included in Toys & Games box, Festivals & Holidays box

  • Description: Brought to Japan from China by Buddhist monks, kites were originally used to lift materials to construction workers.  However, they are now used for festivals and recreation. Kites vary by region, and in Hamamatsu, kites are flown during the Hamamatsu festival, celebrating the birth of Lord Hamamatsu’s baby son.  It is still customary to fly a kite when a baby boy is born.  This is known as hatsudako.
