  • Description: Children’s Day is an annual national holiday held on May 5th. During this time carp kites (koinobori) are decorated outside families homes. Koinobori originated from the samurai warriors when they used to carry similar colorful banners on the battlefield. The carp is known for its courage and strength that is desired in most boys; therefore families hang these kites to honor their son(s). Each color resembles a member of the household. Black for the father, red for the mother and blue, green, purple, orange for the children, decreasing in size.
