- Description: There are many types of floats are used at festivals throughout Japan. Each festival may call them a different name. The main ones are mikoshi (portable shrines used at Shinto festivals), yatai (cart floats, two-story floats), yama (carried on people’s shoulders) and hoko (another name for yama).
