Mobile radar

In early fall, 2023, I was awarded an internal “Good to Great” grant to support the expansion of the OSU Atmospheric Science Program primarily through the development and purchase of a mobile Doppler, polarimetric radar. I am thrilled to be adding this instrument to the OSU suite of measurement platforms. This instrument will be used to support research endeavors in the areas of severe convective storms, tropical cyclones, winter weather, lake effect snow, and more! It will also be an educational tool as I will be developing a class to teach students about radar hardware, software, data collection, and data analysis. Finally, it will be used to provide real-time support and situational awareness when severe weather threatens us here in Ohio. Leveraging my connections with local National Weather Service offices, my research team will provide images of live radar data that can be used to support NWS forecasters in the warning decision process.

The radar is anticipated to arrive in late 2025, in time for the 2026 storm season! Please check back periodically for updates!
