Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

In the honors program, my ultimate goal is to become a more curious, well rounded person who is prepared to enter graduate school, and ultimately the workforce and make a positive impact on society. Beginning with the goal of Global Awareness, I am going to pursue a Spanish Minor, and I hope to one day be fluent in Spanish. I think its very important to learn and understand cultures around the world, and because of this I hope to be able to travel abroad my senior year in Spain so I can further develop my Spanish. As well, through USG, I know I will meet people with different life experiences than my own, and become a more knowledgeable person on cultures around the world. As for the second goal of original inquiry, I want to become a more curious person with a better understanding of the intricacies of the scientific process, and I plan to seek out research opportunities in the John Glenn School of Public Policy, and the Department of Chemistry. My interest in the environment and conservation is why I want to hopefully do  research to improve campus conservation policy. I will begin this by taking courses in Environmental Science, which leads me into the idea of academic enrichment. To me, academic enrichment means going outside of your comfort zone, and constantly challenging yourself to broaden your understanding. In order to do this, I decided to major in both Chemistry and Political Science. Both of these majors are extremely different in the type of learning, but I think that they are complimentary in what I want to achieve. To further this, I want to take as many honors courses as possible; the depth at which content is analyzed makes me a more effective learner and a stronger student. As for the goal of leadership development, my idea of leadership is usually to lead by example, but one of my goals is to become a better leader through my words. As a member of the University Student Government, I have a great opportunity to become a better leader in this way. One of my most important personal goals is to find a service organization to help people around campus and make as much of an impact as I can. In high school, being involved in the community service club as well as cards for kids broadened my perspective on the world around me, and helped me to realize just how much doing service, no matter how small, makes an impact. My hope is to become a part of the organization Students Demand Action, as well another service based organization(outside of politics). All of these ideas are how I just want to begin to embrace the Honors G.O.A.L.S., and one of my personal goals is to not be stagnant in how I get involved and grow as a person. These Honors G.O.A.L.S. help me to find that constant growth.

About Me

My name is Stephen Jackman, and I’m an honors student at OSU studying Chemistry and Political Science. My hope is to one day become either an Environmental Policy Advisor, or a Congressional Campaign Manager. I have a passion for politics, and a fascination with the workings of government. I hope to use my Chemistry knowledge as a background to eventually lead into Environmental Science in grad school. I went to Thomas Worthington High School, and was a delegate at Buckeye Boys State, as well as a member of the tennis team, golf team and Community Service Club. I was also involved in Cards for Kids, a mentorship program for elementary school students. In my spare time I love to watch movies and play cards.
