Artifacts

I have recently joined a group that will be working together in order to make helpful review videos for students who are going to be taking the upcoming ACT in hopes of bettering their appearance on college applications. By using our past experience and success taking standardized tests we will focus on central points that allowed us to succeed in our scenarios. Each of us in the group will take on a specific part of the exam that we have mastered and talk about quick tips and hints that can boost an individual’s score hopefully.

About Me

ePortfolio Photo

My name is Jake Michael Irons from Georgetown, MA, a small town about 30 minutes North of Boston. I am in the STEM Scholars Program at The Ohio State University and beginning on the path of majoring in Actuarial Science. For my interests I love all sports, to both play and watch, especially soccer, basketball, and football, and all of these sports played huge factors in how I developed as a human and the traits that define who I am today. Throughout my time in school so far, from Preschool all the way up until when I recently graduated High School, I knew every single student that was in my grade as there were not many of us and few of my fellow peers, moved away or transferred to different schools. These intimate relationships I developed helped get me to this point in my life. Whenever I struggled in school or had trouble grasping a topic in class I would know who to go to for advice and who could help me out the most in each subject. Up until this point of my life however I did not need much, if any, help in whatever Mathematics class I was in and I thoroughly enjoyed each class I took throughout all the years up until now. This is what led me to this point, as a STEM Scholar because so far the most common advice I have been given in my life is do what you love and enjoy and all forms of Mathematics fall under this category for myself. The moment I realized I wanted to pursue a career in a STEM field and was the turning point of growth was in talking with my Pre-Calculus teacher, Mrs. Felides. She was easily my favorite teacher in my entire life and I could talk to her for hours about Math and other things and she would always give me compliments on how easily I picked up certain ideals and inspired and guided me to become a STEM Scholar to prove and support my strength in the field of Math. So that is why I want to be a STEM Scholar, to showcase my abilities and prove Mrs. Felides right on her opinion of my skills in these fields.

My major as I previously stated is Actuarial Science, and I feel as if I am prepared to take on the workload that is needed and required to become a certified actuary at the end of my four years here at The Ohio State University. Throughout high school I excelled in whatever Mathematics course I was taking and developed real friendships with a few of those who taught me in those classes. Specifically with Mrs. Felides, who I mentioned earlier as a major factor in my deciding to be an actuary talked with me separately on several occasions about the numerous paths I could go down with majors that were heavily related to my favorite subject. She helped me narrow it down and then I finally decided on Actuarial Science which puts me where I am now. Mrs. Felides would work with me on problems to give me a taste in the life of an actuary so I feel as if I am ahead of where I should be in a sense, however I still have a lot to learn and have been taught by several teachers how to best take in and learn new information. My math teachers throughout High School have helped me get to this point and have also prepared me to succeed at the college level and beyond as I know how to acquire new skills that will forever allow myself to learn and develop to succeed as an actuary or whatever occupation I end up in.
