Argentina: Final Information Network

Traditional Sources

1. La Nación [Source is in Spanish]

La Nación is one of the oldest and largest sources of conservative, center-right daily national news in Argentina that competes directly with Argentina’s other widely read newspaper, Clarín. New issues of La Nación are released daily with sections about politics, economics, society, arts & culture, technology, sports, and world news, demonstrating the breadth that is one of its strengths.

La Nación was founded by Bartolomé Mitre, one of Argentina’s former presidents, whose family still presides over this source [1]. The Buenos Aires-based private company who owns La Nación, called S.A. La Nación, is owned by the Mitre family while the newspaper’s publisher, Bartolomé Mitre, is the founder’s great-great-grandnephew [2]. S.A. La Nación, along with Grupo Clarín, shares control of a major association of companies and publishers of newspapers, magazines, and websites (called ADEPA) as well as Argentina’s primary newsprint manufacturer, Papel Prensa [3]. Due to these holdings, the company has been accused of having a monopoly over newsprint that has negatively affected independent newspapers [4].

While La Nación has its own website, access to news on this site is limited to 35 articles before you must pay for a subscription. As such, PressReader may be used for free access to this source at the following link: https://www.pressreader.com/argentina/la-nacion/20180131

2. Página/12 [Source is in Spanish]

Página/12 is a center-left daily Argentine newspaper published in Buenos Aires that offers content about society, the economy, science, culture, as well as world and entertainment news. The newspaper is owned by Grupo Octubre, an Argentine multimedia company based in Buenos Aires [5]. Grupo Octubre was created by Victor Santa María, a prominent unionist and politician for Argentina’s Justicialist party [6].

Página/12 prioritizes democracy, human rights and critical analysis of information, rather than just delivering news. Their slogan, La otra mirada, which translates to “the other viewpoint,” demonstrates their leftist standpoint that contrasts against popular center-right sources like La Nación and Clarín. In addition to this, center-right Argentinian President Mauricio Macri does not follow this news source on Twitter like he does La Nación or Clarín. This source also claims to use “everyday” Argentine language which they describe as a style of biting humor that is characteristic of the nation and that contrasts tone of the other sources included in this information network. The priorities of the newspaper as well as the style in which it is written reflect its critical, leftist stance. Página/12 also likely caters to its demographic, determined from 58% of its audience, who are between the ages of 18 and 52 years and are of middle or upper-middle class status [7]. Overall, this source is useful for those wishing to gain a view of Argentine news contrary to that which predominates in its most popular media.

3. Diario Río Negro [Source is in Spanish]

Diario Río Negro is a center-right daily newspaper headquartered in General Roca, Argentina and that is privately-held by the company Editorial Río Negro S.A. Its articles are written by correspondents from various cities in Río Negro and Neuquén provinces where it is distributed. Río Negro and Neuquén, are in the southern half of Argentina, situated in Patagonia, where it is considered the oldest and most-distributed newspaper [8].

Diario Río Negro’s website provides provincial and national news in categories that include breaking news, society, sports, and culture. A strength of this source is its local view of Argentina and its clear organization of the origin of each news story. For instance, in the provincial news section of their website, most articles are subtitled with the city of each province from which the news originates, including Bariloche, Cipolleti, General Roca, Viedma, and Neuquén city. The national news is also subtitled, either as “Argentina,” “Buenos Aires,” “City of Buenos Aires,” or “World.”

Diario Río Negro contrasts with the more popular, Buenos-Aires-centered national sources in this information network, since this source has a more provincial focus in that it is headquartered and mainly reports on two specific provinces. The organization of each article by city and province makes it easier to distinguish between which content originates from where, which is a increases user-friendliness. As a center-right news source, it also contrasts most directly with Página/12, the left-wing traditional news source included in this network.

New Media Sources

1. Global Voices [Source is in English]

Global Voices is a non-profit blog that aggregates news stories from various other blogs, independent presses, and social media. The multitude of contributors of each article are bloggers, journalists, academics, and human rights activists who digitally curate the information presented. According to their editorial code, Global Voices is committed to presenting transparent and accurate information with identified sources that avoids stereotypes and conflicts of interest [9].

Global Voices’s strength is in their aim to create a global understanding of a wide-variety of events not typically covered in larger, more traditional news sources. For instance, they defend censorship rights and freedom of speech to attempt to give a voice to marginalized and misrepresented communities, which helps audiences gain a better picture of smaller sectors of Argentina society. On the other hand, given its global focus, Argentina-specific news is posted to the website about one to three times a month, which is less frequent compared to national sources.

2. La Izquierda Diario [Source is in Spanish]

La Izquierda Diario is the first digital daily in Argentina that represents the far-left, from a Trotskyist perspective. More specifically, it represents the Socialist Workers’ Party (Partido de los Trabajadores Socialistas; PTS) in Argentina. As such, La Izquierda Diario focuses on the struggles of workers, women, and youth, and the goals of their project include finding an social and political alternative to the capitalist order and investigating truths where there are cover-ups, thereby “unmasking the lies of the powerful” [10]. Among other media sources, La Izquierda Diario is unique because it is independent and does not receive private or public funding, rather asking its readers help fund their project by becoming monthly subscribers [11]. This source is also part of an international movement of similar left-voice publications in Brazil, Mexico, France, Germany, the United States, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Venezuela [12].

La Izquierda Diario provides sections about the economy, politics, international news, the working world (information about workers protests and organizations), gender and sexuality, and youth in a blog-like format. There is also a section that links to an online magazine called Ideas de Izquierda (Ideas of the Left) with blog posts that center around the ideology, debates, worker’s culture, and movements of the far-left. The top of the website narrows down the contents of each article by provincially (16 of Argentina’s 23 provinces are included), a useful feature for instances in which more information about a specific event affecting a specific area is desired.

The multimedia composition of La Izquierda Diario, which includes articles, videos, and tweets embedded into the website, as well as photo galleries and art (including cartoons) that depict important events and political themes, is advantageous because it presents the far-left movement in Argentina in a multi-dimensional manner. Within this framework, La Izquierda Diario provides a vast amount of information about a relatively small audience within Argentina in terms of political alignment. The strong position of this source functions as its strength and weakness. On one hand, La Izquierda Diario is a valuable starting point for someone seeking to inform themselves about the far-left movement and ideology from a national, regional, and international perspective. This is especially important considering the prominence of workers’ movements in Argentina. On the other hand, the specificity of this source necessitates its use in conjunction with other media sources to gain a balanced perspective of Argentina.

La Izquiera Diaria’s website: http://www.laizquierdadiario.com/

La Izquiera Diaria is also exceptionally active on its Twitter page, linked here: https://twitter.com/izquierdadiario?lang=en

3. The Bubble [Source is in English]

The Bubble is a digital media company that provides daily coverage of current events and analysis of pop and media culture in Argentina and Latin America [13]. Its website contains sections dedicated to the latest news, politics, economy, lifestyle, and sports. The Bubble claims to stray from the standpoint of traditional media in that it provides a “no-bullshit approach to the facts” although it concedes that each writer in its staff speaks from their own viewpoints [14]. The quoted material in the previous sentence also reveals the informal tone of the source. Notably, The Bubble’s founder is Adrian Bono, a Spanish journalist who notably worked as the former deputy editor for The Buenos Aires Herald, the largest English newspaper in Argentina that was shut down in 2017 which contributes to its authority as a reliable source [15]. Additionally, despite being written in English, this source is intended for both local and international readers and its writers work from within Argentina. The presentation of information in English along with reporting on “non-standard” news like upcoming cultural events (in the realm of music, art, food, cinema, and festivals), discount tickets, and the official dollar exchange rate makes it especially valuable for those from who plan to travel to Argentina. Otherwise, this source is useful for those who want an easy to understand, less politicized overview of the current events and issues in Argentina or who want to know more about the culture of the country.

Social Media Sources

1. Mauricio Macri, The President of Argentia’s Twitter Page [Source is in Spanish]

President Mauricio Macri is a member of the center-right PRO (Propuesta Republicana/Repuclican Proposal) party of Argentina. While tweets are posted to this page daily, the author of each tweet is unclear, given that some tweets are presented in first person while others could be interpreted as third person. Regardless of whether Macri or an administrator manages his account, the tweets made represent his ideas. This source is a convenient means of keeping track of major events in which the president is personally involved, such as the G20 which will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina later this year. It is also useful for observing which events President Macri highlights on his Twitter feed in comparison to what events the other sources in this information network focus on, as well as the differences in each source’s interpretation of the same events. With this in mind, it should be noted that as the president of Argentina, Macri must establish a strong political stance and thus the information communicated by this source will likely omit anything contrary to his beliefs and the ideas associated with the PRO. Finally, this source can be used to gauge citizen reaction to Macri’s response to important events, and observing whether these reactions are largely negative or positive may help construct an idea about citizen approval of the president.

2. Margarita Stolbizer, The President of Partido GEN’s Twitter Page [Source is in Spanish]

Margarita Stolbizer is the president of the center-left political party, Partido GEN, under the Progressive party, one of the major political parties in Argentina. According to Partido GEN’s website, the party reclaims politics as an instrument to reaffirm democracy and the search for liberty based on Argentine Independence and Republic within the ethical frameworks of solidarity, justice and sustainable development [16]. Some of the party’s other main ideas include correcting social inequality and exclusion, supporting transparency and access to knowledge and new technology to open opportunities within an equal society, and facilitating dialogue to combat partisanship. As president of Partido GEN, Stolbizer’s Twitter posts align with these ideas. Although this limits the perspective of the source, the page is useful to gain an understanding of a political party different than the one currently holding executive office and from those that other sources in this network represent. In addition to original content, Stolbizer retweets content daily from the official Partido GEN Twitter, from interviews she has taken part in, and from lawyers dedicated to uncovering corruption which provides broader insight into the Partido GEN platform and Argentina’s issue of transparency.

Audiovisual Sources

1. Todo Noticias [Source is in Spanish]

Todo Noticias is a 24-hour Argentine cable news channel that is owned by Grupo Clarín, the largest media company in Argentina (headquartered in Buenos Aires) that also produces Clarín, one of the country’s primary newspapers. As part of Grupo Clarín, the goals of Todo Noticias are to provide honest, accurate, clear, and comprehensive information. The company also claims to be an advocate of democracy, hold national values, and wants Argentina to achieve global recognition. Todo Noticias itself broadcasts a live stream and other videos throughout the day from within categories such as politics, international news, economics, technology, and society.

Todos Noticias is valuable for its popularity; since it represents the information that a large portion of Argentine society consumes, it brings about an understanding of the types of media and Argentines are exposed to. Another strength of this source is that it provides information on a wide variety of topics, including news specifically discussing events that involve the police, a factor that sets this source apart from others. The 24-hour live stream feature of Todos Noticias makes it best for viewing current and ongoing events in Argentina on a national level, although with this speed of dissemination comes a weakness in that the information is developing and may contain errors that are corrected further in the following of certain news events.

2. El Tribuno [Source is in Spanish]

El Tribuno is a daily tabloid that is part of a privately-owned media group Horizontes S.A. El Tribuno. There are two separate websites for El Tribuno: one website provides news about Salta and the other provides news about Jujuy, the two northwestern-most provinces of Argentina. As such, this source currently has 2 different editors, Sergio Romero and Rubén Rivarola. I have chosen to include the information for the Salta branch of the newspaper in this information network as it is the only newspaper in Salta province.

Sergio Romero is the director for the Salta branch of the newspaper, where El Tribuno is headquartered. The Romero family, who have served as representatives to the Argentine National Congress for Salta, has owned El Tribuno since 1957 and have expressed their Justicialist party, pro-Peronist viewpoint through this news source [17]. Although I could not find information linking Sergio Romero to this family, the fact that this source has been held by the same family for a long period of time is important to consider. This information also imparts a sense of the relationship between Romero’s participation in the Argentine government and his control over a private media-company and newspaper in terms of the views and potential conflicts of interest presented by this source. This is especially important considering that El Tribuno is the only newspaper in Salta province.

The news content provided by El Tribuno falls under categories such as the following: international, national, political, technology, women, and health. This channel posts multiple videos per day and their format seems more informal than the format of the traditional news sources found in this information network. El Tribuno also represents a provincial perspective from outside of Buenos Aires; however, in contrast to the other provincial sources present in this network, it carries viewpoint of the Justicialist Party, the party with the largest presence in Argentina’s national congress. The fact that the current president of Argentina is a member of the center-right PRO party despite the largest portion of Congress being occupied by the Justicialist Party presents a potential conflict between political parties that may be made clearer through comparison of the content President Macri’s Twitter page with this source.

Data Sources

1. Country Watch, 2018 Country Review, Argentina [Source is in English]

Country Watch provides accurate and authoritative information about the political, economic, and business aspects of many countries, including Argentina, in a yearly review. The intended audience of these country reviews are corporations, government organizations, libraries, and universities. The information contained in these reviews is drawn from an extensive variety of sources, including the World Bank, the CIA, BBC and CNN news, and the New Encyclopedia Britannica, to give a few examples. Therefore, this source contains a great quantity and quality of background information about Argentina that can be used to gain a basic understanding of the nation’s history and ongoing political, economic, and business trends. This country review can also be used mediate the information received from other sources that cover Argentina, but since it is only updated yearly it will take time to reflect new developments in Argentina presented in these other sources.

2. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO) Country Profile for Argentina [Source is in English or Spanish, depending on the document chosen]

The FAO is a United Nations agency whose goal is to achieve global food security through access to regular, high quality food [18]. Other goals of the FAO align with solving the issue of hunger and include making agriculture, forestry, and fisheries more productive and sustainable in the face of an expanding global population, reducing rural poverty, increasing the inclusion of independent farmers and agricultural produces into the globalized food and agricultural system, and preventing risks and crises while creating support for disaster response [19]. Additionally, the FAO supports the policies and political commitments toward food security of its member nations.

The FAO provides a country profile for each of its member countries, which includes Argentina. The country profile for Argentina lists FAO priorities for the country such as rural development and alleviating rural poverty, evaluating and strengthening the country’s National Plan for food security, strengthening education, promoting environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources, forestry, and biomass energy, creating a system of biological indicators of climate change, and improving the health of animals and the quality of food. The FAO website provides a detailed account of these priorities in a National Framework of Priorities for Medium-Term FAO Technical Assistance which seems to have been in effect from 2010-2014 [20]. This is just one example of the type of publication that can be found on Argentina’s country profile. Some examples of the FAO’s host of other resources about Argentina include: a map of its farming systems, a list of its FAO projects, trade policy briefs (from the WTO), and various statistical databases with indicators such as demographics, inputs, production, food availability, access and utilization, economic and political stability, and emissions, with a data visualization for each of these indicators [21]. The country profile is updated yearly, while some of the other sources are updated more sporadically.

Argentina’s FAO profile is excellent in that it contains an ample amount of information about the country’s key issues regarding resources, rural poverty, and development. Moreover, as an established agency of the United Nations that values reliable statistical data, the FAO is a dependable source for this type of information. The inclusion of this type of statistical information in this information network is essential because Argentina relies on agricultural exports for its economy, there is a presence of extractive companies operating in rural areas, and there is a high percentage of the population living below the poverty line.

3. CIPPEC (Center for the Implementation of Public Policies for Equity and Growth) [Source is in Spanish]

CIPPEC is an independent, non-profit think tank based in Buenos Aires that works on building “better” public policies in areas related to the state, government, and economic and social development [22].  Their goal is to achieve an equitable, democratic society in terms of income and opportunity that improves the lives of all Argentine citizens through development and implementation of policy. The CIPPEC website provides publications on policy measures they want to see adopted, analysis of current policies, and a section with data visualizations of statistical information on the social and political issues they target. The website’s homepage also provides links to articles that experts who operate within CIPPEC (those who occupy positions like directors and investigators of education and social protection) write that are published in various news sources in Argentina. Examples of these news sources include La Nación, El Cronista Comercial, Clarín, El País, and Página/12, which are all major center-right publications in Argentina except for Página/12. CIPPEC’s funds are spread out among several sectors and only 30% of its comes from the Argentine government. While this source has its own clear agenda which will contribute to a distinct point of view, it provides background information about a variety of policies operating in Argentina in its analysis and suggestions for improving these policies. Therefore, it is a good source to use to understand the policies in Argentina and the discourse and debates surrounding them on a more in-depth level than can be expressed in news articles.

Title: Jooang Daily
Author/Org: Jooang Group & The New York Times
Format/Type of information: Traditional periodical. Daily updates on a wide range of topics. It is interesting to note that this is done through some association with The New York Times, but the exact relationship isn’t clear so it could just be branding. This source is really well put together but the wording is rather strong, erring on the side of subjectivity. That being said it’s very thorough and high quality. The perspective of this source seems somewhat skewed liberal in tone, and least in what I have read. I don’tmind it.
How to access: http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/
Update frequency: Daily, if not more frequently

Description/Why it was selected: This was selected because, although it is similar to the other periodicals, it is really of the upmost quality. Very thorough writing and great web design, which is something to be said for. It is from South Korea and published in several languages, including English. Video Source

Title: MBC
Author/Org: MBC&iMBC
Format/Type of information: Visual Source. Provides a wide range of Korean TV programming. The perspective of this source is odd to place, as it is largely only dramas and things meant for entertainment. How to access: http://content.mbc.co.kr/english/interview/index.html
Update frequency: Depends on the program.

Update frequency: Very frequently – while I was checking it I found results from today, and even from the future for planned publications.
Description/Why it was selected: This source was selected because of the way it presents its data. It seems to use a different algorithm than Lexis Nexus, too, as I got different search results from the same keyword. I think that this source will be a great addition, along with Lexis Nexis, to truly probe the vast amount of information out there. It originates from the USA and is in English, although you can search for articles in many languages. I think this is a valuable source because of how thorough and comprehensive it is.

How to access: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/tags/series?t=korea
Update frequency: It depends on the kind of graph. Most are on a quarter basis. Some have been discontinued.
Description/Why it was selected: This source was selected because FRED is, by all accounts I’ve ever heard, the true standard.   I learned about it in my Macro class and refer to it all the time for data ever since. It originates from the USA and is in English. A possible weakness for this source is that some of the graphs have been discontinued. I think this is a valuable source because it can provide in depth information on the ROK’s economy.

New Media Sources

Title: Seoul Searching
Author/Org: Mimsie Ladner
Format/Type of information: New Media source. This is a personal blog about life in Korea. It covers culture, food, day-to-day life, and travel. This is form the perspective of a foreigner living in South Korea

I think this source is valuable because it can convey the daily happenings of Seoul.

Title: “Seoul Korea” (Facebook)
Author/Org: Seoul Metropolitan Government
Format/Type of information: Social media source. Rather similar in scope to the Seoul Government’s Twitter page, but there are few official pages in English. This is from the perspective of the Seoul Metropolitan government.

Traditional Periodicals:

Le Soleil: This is a regional newspaper in Senegal that focuses on the news, politics, economics, society, regions etc. It serves as a great traditional source for all the happenings in Senegal itself. The website is in French and it appears to act as a form of local news. It updates daily and it has three other main sections such as le soleil business, le soleil grand air and le soleil diaspora. It’s also interesting how it breaks up each individual section into smaller subsections such as small opinion pieces.

It can be accessed at http://www.lesoleil.sn

I chose this news source because it was the most relevant and diverse in comparison to others I came across. While domestically focused, this newspaper does a great job of reporting on many different international events and a variety of sections such as politics, economics and culture etc. I liked how they added in opinion pieces, it helped portray the culture there. One limitation of this source is that its articles are not extremely detailed and it can be difficult to navigate the website. Nevertheless, this source gives a great overarching perspective of the country of Senegal.

BBC news: This traditional international news source acts as a newspaper, radio station and T.V. station. Based in Britain, it also has worldwide respect and prestige as a broadcasting company. It is produced in English and updates daily. It is an excellent and trustworthy source of domestic and international news. It is divided into operational divisions and commercial divisions. The commercials divisions consist of BBC Worldwide, BBC World News, BBC Studios and BBC Studioworks.  Moreover, it has individual country profiles detailing their politics, media, population size etc.

It can be accessed at http://www.bbc.com/news

I chose this source because of its accuracy, reliability and familiarity. It not only shares domestic and international news but it does an excellent job of staying impartial.Unlike local sources, however, BBC has limitations in that it only reports on the overarching issues or events of the country. It is not able to zoom in on the ingrained cultural, and societal customs of local Senegalese life.

Wal Fadjri L’AuroreThis regional newspaper works as a traditional news source for Senegal. This major daily newspaper in Senegal covers articles about finance, economy, business, entertainment, sports, politics, employment, and real estate.Unlike the other traditional news sources, I have observed of Senegal, this news source gives good comprehensive coverage of the country political, social and economic viewpoints. Each article posted is longer, more detailed and covers more topics. This French newspaper is broken down into four main headings with between five to seven subheadings listed beneath each one and it has several opinion pieces. To add to the relevance of this source, the website has other major Senegalese news sources listed on their homepage.

It can be accessed at http://www.walf-groupe.com

I chose this traditional news source because of its credible and broadly serving information network. This source gives a great overview of the different viewpoints in Senegal. This can be represented through the opinion pieces posted on the website, and the diverse sections that portray the social, economic, cultural opinions and beliefs of the locals there. One setback would be the lack of sources listed on the website and its relevance in comparison to other sources. Nevertheless, this source is updated daily and appears to cover a range of different issues.

New Media Sources:

Senego: I chose Senego as my new media source which covers regional aspects of culture, politics and societal expectations. Senego is a mix between a news source and a buzz feed article, it’s what I would consider a popular culture website. While not literally credible, Senego gives us a good grasp of the cultural and societal expectations surrounding Senegal. It is divided into Politique, People, Sport, TV and Rubriques which then divides into smaller indexes. The whole website is in French and appears to be a frequent source for young adolescents in Senegal. This source does not update frequently. It updates monthly or every couple of months.

It can be accessed here: https://senego.com

I chose this source because I can see how it is part of popular culture. It is interesting how the website is divided into small subsections such as humor, TV and health. I think it’s a very new and modern approach to new media and gives each reader a good grasp of the trends present there. The main limitation present within this source is the lack of relevant and credible information. The articles are often extremely short and touch more on popular culture, than any significant information.

Seneweb.com: I chose seneweb as my new media source. This local source is interesting because it has a mixture of news, popular culture and blogs on its website. Each blog covers a different topic regarding influential people, politics and culture. Although started by Basile Niane, the blogs are written by a variety of people and appear to be very popular. These blogs are targeted towards adolescents and young adults.  What separates this website from others is that it gives the ability to a general user to add their own opinions and to even create blogs. While this may lower the credibility of seneweb, it will give more creative freedom to the Senegalese people.

It can be accessed here: www.seneweb.com

I chose this source because of its relevance to the popular culture and data dissemination of  Senegal. While most traditional news sources only contain news and some smaller subheadings such as culture. Seneweb.com encompasses creative freedom, news and the culture of Senegal. I think it is interesting the different viewpoint this gives. The website is in French and it is situated in Senegal.

Social Media Sources:

Amnesty Senegal: I chose this international source for the social media component of my country. Amnesty International is an organization that is well known around the world. Thus, Amnesty Sénégal is a domestic form of the organization which focuses on events and happenings in Senegal. Amnesty Sénégal is focused on the promotion and the protection of human rights in Senegal and in the World. Within this organization, there are local Senegalese working to combat human rights injustices. In this way, this source gives a credible centralized point of view of Senegal.I found their main social media site on twitter, but they are also in a sub-index on Amnesty International. Both sites are in French and contain relevant events pertaining to human rights violations and efforts.

They can be accessed at https://twitter.com/AmnestySenegalor @AmnestySenegal and http://www.amnesty.sn

I chose this source because of how closely I align with their mission. Moreover, this source provides a great reference to the efforts of Senegal in fighting human rights violations. Through these different access points, one can get a solid perspective on the who, what, where and why of Senegal’s human rights movement and advocacy. The twitter posts, in turn, present provoking commentary on different news sources throughout Senegal. In general, I would say the main limitation for this source is that it doesn’t give an overarching perspective of human rights abuses, it is very locally centralized.

Le Senegal: I chose Le Senegal for my social media source. Unlike my other sources, this one provides a different scope on Senegal. It provides a national viewpoint of Senegal through sports. Like most countries in the global south, sports are an innate part of their culture and I feel as though this source can give great coverage of the culture and society present in Senegal. Le Senegal is a platform on Facebook that posts up and coming events in both English and French pertaining to soccer in Senegal. It is a Media/News company situated in Dakar, Senegal and it has over 511,901 followers on Facebook. It is in French and in both languages, French and English on Facebook.

This source can be accessed on Facebook, but also at its media website http://www.lesenegal.net

I chose this source because I believe that it portrays perfectly how the Senegalese people think and act in their community. In most countries, especially in the United States, people embrace sports as a respected tradition but more so it often symbolizes the patriotism one feels for his/her country. I think that this social media source gives a great scope of how the Senegalese people see sports and more importantly their country. The main limitation of this source is that it doesn’t diversify the sports it covers or the viewpoints. It focuses on one central perspective.

UNFPA Senegal: I chose the UNFPA Senegal as my social media source for Senegal. Found on Facebook, Twitter and the main UNFPA website, this source encompasses many of the requirements that the other sources include that being those of traditional, data or new media sources. The UNFPA in Senegal is put in place to assure reproductive rights to all. The UNFPA stands for the United Nations Population Fund. It directly advocates and supports the reproductive health of women, guaranteeing that there is reliable health care, services and consultation for those who need it. Although UNFPA is a global initiative, it is broken into UNFPA global and UNFPA West and Central Africa. This source directly focuses on Senegal and the website is broken down into news, publications, multimedia and data visualizations. It is produced in both English and French.

It can be accessed here: http://senegal.unfpa.org/fr and on Facebook and Twitter

I chose this global source because of the insight it gives us on reproductive rights in Senegal. As Senegal is one of the lesser developed countries, it lacks many basic resources such as education, health services and proper infrastructure. I believe that this source gives a detailed and zoomed in perspective of reproductive rights in Senegal. The data visualizations help to convey the true extent of reproductive failures and successes in Senegal. The only limitation I can see with this source is the idea that it is branching off from the global UNFPA source. In this way, it has fewer resources and most likely funding regarding dissemination of information.

Audio/Video Sources:

Radiodiffusion Television Senegalaise (RTS): This audio-based source is a local, state-run form of television and radio broadcasting in Senegal. Most audio sources in Senegal are private, as such RTS is one of the more relevant and accurate forms of broadcasting.  It operates Chaine Nationale and Senegal Internationale, Dakar FM and regional services. It is also broken up into actualités (news), emissions (channels) and many others. RTS is broadcasted in French and the website appears to have a diverse amount of news portrayed. The news presented contains sections on the local news, state-run channels and mini archives.

It can be accessed at http://www.rts.sn and on most social media sites such as Facebook, google plus, Instagram and Twitter.

I chose this audio source because I thought it encompassed well the radio coverage of Southern Africa, specifically Senegal. It was also in French, their native language which helps diversify the source. The main limitation to this source, however, would be the navigation of the website and the depth of news covered. RTS does a great job of broadcasting on a range of different news, but it does not include much detail in its articles or make it easy to navigate its website. RTS is on most social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and updates daily.

Radio France Internationale (RFI): This audio-based source is an international, and regional form of television and radio broadcasting in Senegal.Although situated in France, RFI has many channels that broadcast out to countries in the Global South. RFI is a French public radio service that broadcasts in Paris and to the rest of the world. It is one of the most listened to international radio stations in the world and it broadcasts 24 hours a day in 12 different languages. All channels are operated by the state company, France Médias Monde, situated in France. Moreover, RFI also covers a wide variety of different sections including economy, culture, sports, sciences, technology and sections on France itself, the international world and Africa itself.

It can be accessed at http://www.rfi.fr and is also found on several different forms of social media, those including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Dailymotion, YouTube, Soundcloud and Tune-In.

I chose this audio source because of how widely used this radio station is throughout the world. In general, radio usage in Senegal is crucial due to the present high illiteracy rate and most locals therefore only use the radio for information about the rest of the world. It is for this reason that I believe this audio source provides great coverage of Senegal. It gives an international viewpoint but also aids in the regional understanding of the country. The only limitation with this source is that it may not be completely in touch with the local viewpoints concerning societal and cultural expectations and customs.

Data Sources:

CIA World Factbook: This U.S. global source works as an English data source for Senegal. The CIA World Factbook is an excellent reference for an overview of a specific country. In this case, the fact book outlines Senegal through its geography, society, government, economy, energy, military etc. For each section, it provides a detailed outline of the country’s profile in general. It also gives several relevant statistics surrounding the country’s infrastructure and economic development.

This source can be accessed at https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/resources/the-world-factbook/geos/sg.html

I chose this data source because of the relevance of the CIA. The CIA is a world-renowned organization that is a credible and recognized international source. In this way, the information portrayed on the website is very accurate and reliable. I already use the CIA World Factbook for several projects I work on, so keeping up to date should not be an issue. However, as the source is only updated yearly, this database will not be the most reliable news source for updated daily news.

Encyclopedia Britannica: This U.S. and UK news source works as a data news source for Senegal. The Encyclopedia Britannica works almost identically to the way the CIA World Factbook does, in that it is an excellent reference which gives a great overarching view of a specific country. In this case, it would be Senegal. The Encyclopedia Britannica is a general knowledge English-language encyclopedia that is shared between the U.S. and the UK. This data news source is broken into several different subsections which cover the country of Senegal. The most prominent being the Introduction and Quick Facts, Land, People, Economy, Government and Society, Cultural life and History. Within each of these headings are smaller more detailed subheadings.

This source can be accessed at https://www.britannica.com/place/Senegal

I chose this data source because of its prominence as an internationally renowned reference for relevant information on the world. Encyclopedia Britannica is a global educational publisher that promotes knowledge and learning. It is also one of the oldest English-language encyclopedias still in production. In fact, this shows that Encyclopedia Britannica has been respected andis a trustworthy source of information. It is for these reasons that I  believe this source give good comprehensive coverage of Senegal. This source will not be updated regularly and for this reason, this source will provide a great background on Senegal, but not necessarily up and coming news. Moreover, as this is a worldwide source, it will not be as relevant to the local culture and societal expectations of Senegal.

Europa World Plus Database: This global news source works as a data news source for Senegal. This source is produced in English and covers the historical, geographical, economic, and political profiles of 250 countries and global regions. It is the online version of the Europa World Year Book. This database gives a great overview of Senegal. It consists of several subheadings such as the Country Profile, Country Statistics and the Directory. Within each category there are much more detailed aspects of the country such as the statistics concerning population, mining, industry and finances etc. This database is great for Senegal because it pays attention to detail and includes several different domains to obtain information from.

It can be accessed at http://www.europaworld.com.proxy.lib.ohio-state.edu/entry/sn

I chose this source because of its relevance and world-renowned resources. This online version produces impartial and efficient background information on the country of Senegal and 249 other countries. This database has been utilized by the media, major business, companies, governmental agencies and libraries for its credible information. It provides an overarching perspective of the country for the international world. A limitation of this source would be the idea that it is not addressing the local perspective of the people. Simply fact-based and written by experts, the societal expectation and culture are not addressed within the database. As this source is updated yearly, I will use it as background information for Senegal.

The Russian Federation: Final Information Network

Traditional Periodicals

  1. National Geographic Russia is a long-standing magazine in Russia that is authored and run by National Geographic but centered mainly on Russia. Articles from this magazine can also be found online and translated into English. Articles contain content about different geographical and natural phenomenons in the geographical vastness that is considered Russia. It can be accessed through a subscription or by visiting the website, http://www.nat-geo.ru/. It is possible to read this website through using the Google Translate option provided when using the link for the Russian page. The periodical gets updated weekly with new articles and has monthly showcased news just like National Geographic in the United States. On an iPhone you can set it up where you receive updates from a certain news source, including National Geographic Russia. The articles from this magazine are ones that will contribute well to an information network because they provide insight on what Russians are reading about pertaining to their country naturally. It shows what places people are interested in, the wildlife that is native there or endangered, and offers a view that is not overly marred by any biases.
  2. The Moscow Times is a popular newspaper in Moscow that covers everything from op-eds to politics to business and the economy, much like the New York Times in the United States. It provides the reader access to news in just Moscow as well as world news. Moscow is the economic center of the Russian Federation and many key events take place there. It is updated daily and is online for internet users to have easy access as well at https://themoscowtimes.com/. This can be considered the central hub of news if someone wanted to get a wide range of topics to read about in Russia. They have an entire tab for the upcoming 2018 World Cup that Russia is hosting. When using a computer to access this newspaper online, a tab pops up where you can sign up to get updates on different categories if you want. I will mainly be using this site for the politically and World Cup news that I am interested in as well. This traditional news source has a variety of information that is updated daily on it. It provides a user-friendly site to search for specific topics and news.
  3. Chaspik Newspaper is a newspaper whose headquarters are in St. Petersburg, also known as Russia’s cultural capital. St. Petersburg is an important city to keep track of news on for many different reasons, including social events and popular culture. They specifically have a section of their newspaper devoted to crime stories, which allows you to see what Russian crime and of international incidents those are, especially with St. Petersburg being one of the biggest tourist destinations in Russia. Different news stories are updated on their website daily, which is http://www.chaspik.spb.ru/. Even though this news source is not an independent news source from the state, the stories do offer a view of St. Petersburg that is organic compared to a news source that is located outside of the actual city and reporting in. You will be able to compare news stories from other sources to how Chaspik reports on the same events to see the similarities and contrasts of stances taken and words used. This is a similar approach to what you should do with news stories that are from the United States from sources like CNN compared to MSNBC or Fox News. The website version of this newspaper allows notifications of updates to be sent to an email when there is something that you have flagged as a topic of interest, namely politics and economics of St. Petersburg.
  4. Russian News Agency TASS is the biggest news source in the Russian Federation and is owned and run by the government. This news source has been around since the early 1900s and now is available online and through their Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages as well. The website is directly translated into English without the user needing to do anything. TASS covers all topics that could be talked about in Russia, making sure to have everything covered from the government’s biases. This includes categories like world news, Russian politics, military and defense, space and science and culture and society. With news from TASS, you must remember the goals of the Russian government and how they want to portray themselves to the world and how they want their citizens to view them as well. This affects the amount of coverage certain stories will get or if they get reported on at all. TASS gets updated daily as news stories happen, and is easily found online through this link, http://tass.com/.

New Media

  1. Europe Free radio is always updated daily and offers a wide variety of views through the different bloggers and articles posted on the site. The views are not censored or dictated by the Russian government like a Russian news source would be. There is more freedom of expression and opinions other than that of the acting administration and can be easily accessed through having an internet connection and using the link https://www.rferl.org/p/5547.html. The website is useful because it offers news on more than just the Russian Federation, so it is possible to compare the reports from one country compared to Russia on the same event or story. There are many different ways to stay updated with this source, including getting updated through an e-mail subscription because that option was one that could be given in English, which most of the website is. Often, the articles and blogs are authored by people who are not Russian themselves but report on areas in the Russian Federation or surrounding countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union, or those who are using the platform as their only freedom of expression option who do live in Russia, which offers a different perspective than typical news sources.
  2. навальный (“bulk” in English) is a political blog written by a man named Alexey Navalny, who is the chairman of the Progress Party in Russia as well as the founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. This is a blog that is mainly against the Putin administration. Navalny blogs regularly but not everyday, and the blogs consist mostly of content about the political atmosphere in Russia at the current time, especially with how the current administration has been in power for almost 20 years and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. There are live broadcasts as well as his written blogs on his website, https://navalny.com/. You also can follow him on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and several other social media platforms. This is an important information source because it shows the thoughts and views of Russians who do not always support the current administration in Russia. This has significance because often in mainstream media and news in Russia, pro-Putin is almost required.
  3. Colta

Social Media

  1. A great social media resource is to follow the Twitter account of a senior analyst of Russia and blogger, Brian Whitmore. Whitmore does a daily blog about Russian politics called the Daily Vertical. Whitmore currently lives in Prague and had posted his blog on Radio Free Europe, which is where I found this resource, and now will start posting it through The Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA). He posts all his blogs and videos on his account and also posts his own thoughts in a shorter form with his tweets and provides links for other articles and people relating to topics he reports on. His perspective is that of a non-native to Russia, a more westernized view. His Twitter handle is @PowertVertical (https://twitter.com/PowerVertical. It will be easy to keep updated with this source just by checking Twitter daily (which most do anyways) or listening to the videos posted. Whitmore has his blog once a day but also will tweet other things, so this source is always updated at least once daily.
  2. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation’s Twitter account is a primary social media source for the current administration in power in the Russian Federation. This account is verified as the official account of Russia’s Ministry of Defense. Their tweets can either be translated into English or are already published that way by them. It is possible to follow them on Twitter and see their updates, which usually is every hour with an update on a news story or military maneuver @mod_russia. This information source shows what the Russian Ministry of Defense is considering to be newsworthy in their tweets. It also allows an insight into what they report on about other countries, like in Syria. Several tweets on the account were actually in Arabic. The pictures posted are also a valuable insight to what the Russian military may look like. The content tweeted from this account shows clearly what the Ministry of Defense deems a priority for people to know and shows the information that they choose to be transparent about.

Audio/Video

  1. TV Rain is the only independent news channel in the Russian Federation at the moment. They provide news coverage on everything in Russia from politics to editorials, and are on all social media platforms and have a YouTube channel that can be watched with English subtitles. The views and opinions expressed on TV Rain are important because it comes from an independent news source, so the bias is not towards supporting the acting governmental administration, especially with the recent elections and Putin becoming president for another 6 years. The link to their website that has all audio and video links for articles is listed as https://tvrain.ru/. They have a YouTube channel that is accessible to watch whenever, and their updates happen daily depending on what section of news you would want to watch or listen to.
  2. RT (formerly Russia Today) is a television and internet network that is funded by the Russian government and based out of Moscow, Russia, but includes international partners and news, namely the United States in Washington D.C. This information network, like a newspaper or magazine, gets updated regularly. Some areas get updated daily, while others are on a weekly basis if it is a talk show or different interviews. RT is used for the purpose of reaching viewers through satellite channels who are outside of Russia to hear about Russia. The website can be directly translated into English and Spanish and offers world news as well as that in Russia. The material from this source does not favor the United States in certain areas and provides a different point of view than what is normally seen in news in America about similar topics as well as shows how Russians dispute over their own politics. The website for RT is easily accessible through https://www.rt.com/and can also be found on most popular social media platforms or through the downloadable app.
  3. Echo of Moscow is an independent radio station that is based out of Moscow and broadcasts nationwide, namely about social and political events of both domestic and international issues. This station makes a point of showing different vies and tries not to have biases in their reporting unless it is an op-ed of some kind. Echo of Moscow also has a website with access to all their social media and YouTube videos, which can be translated from Russian into English and found by this link, https://echo.msk.ru/. This radio station is unique in the fact that 34% of it is owned by its employees, including Alexey Navalny, who is a prominent figure in the political world as a blogger and activist against the current administration. The statistics given through this source are widely used by many other news sources and is updated daily. Echo of Moscow is not entirely free of scrutiny or even physicall attacks on their office, but they are able to provide news on important issues for Russians without an over-the-top Putin bias. This news source is great to get a middle line perspective on events happening in read time Russia.

Data Bank

  1. The World Bank is a great data source for any country including the Russian Federation. There is a multitude of information that can be found on their website. The data can range from education to internet access to an array of socioeconomic contributions to the functionality of Russia as a whole (GDP, exports, imports, agriculture etc.). All of this data is updated in yearly reports and data can be shown over 20 years into the past. There are visualization tools as well to show a clearly picture of information that you are looking for. To specifically reach the data bank, the link is https://data.worldbank.org/country/russian-federation. This is accessible online and is published originally in English. There is also an app that is the World Bank’s EdStats Data Finder. Statistics can be used to skew information or sometimes can be read wrong, but the data provided by the World Bank does not have an obvious political motivator for providing the information. The World Bank is a mostly western institution but also covers countries globally that they are currently helping.  The World Bank has been and still is influential globally with Russia along with other countries that are their allies.
  2. Europa World Plus is a fantastic data base to use on information concerning the Russian Federation and the surrounding countries. It is updated and published by the Routledge Taylor and Francis Group. This database provides many different caches of information regarding Russia. It depicts historical events, geographical locations and their significance, the current and past political administrations, as well as finance and the population of Russia and the surrounding territories in the federation. It can be accessed through the OSU library database search engine, and the link for the website is http://www.europaworld.com.proxy.lib.ohio-state.edu/entry?id=ru&go_country=GO. The information found on there can be useful if you need background information on something or factual evidence to support an opinion that you read in a blog or have formed yourself about an issue concerning Russia and its involvement globally. It also provides easy access to information about Russia’s neighboring countries. The website as of now has financial and geographical information from 2016, but does update, just not as often as a newspaper would. Since Ohio State provides its students with off-campus access to its libraries, you can use this database anywhere that you have an internet connection.

Switzerland: Final Information Network

SOCIAL MEDIA SOURCES:

Social Media Source #1: The Local – Switzerland’s News in English

https://www.thelocal.se

Language: English

*When you arrive at thelocal.se website, at the top you can click on “Switzerland” by the Editions tool bar. This then changes the website link to: https://www.thelocal.ch – which is the Swiss based online code. [like google.com versus google.de or google.ch]

The first web page offers most of the same information as the second page, except for the fact that thelocal.se webpage offers more information geared towards English users. For example: they have many links on the first page that: help English speakers obtain a job in various cities in Switzerland, and ways to adapt in Switzerland as an English language speaker.

The Local is a new media source that is text based and also interactive for the user. This source provides English translation of Swedish news articles. There are also various tabs on the webpage that redirect the user towards different things. You can view News in Switzerland, Jobs that are available, Homes that are for sale, Galleries which include photos of various cities, Dating which takes the user to The Local dating app, and a Community tab that shows the user items for sale within different cities.

The News articles that are provided give the reader a glimpse into the local news occurring in towns throughout Switzerland, but there are also articles dealing with issues that affect the country as a whole. For example, today there is an article available titled, “Swiss government wants to end tax penalty for married couples”. There is some mention of the political parties and government throughout the news articles. You can also find articles that are more information and entertainment based on the website – for example you can find information about celebrities in Switzerland or events going on.

This source is valuable to those wishing to learn more about Switzerland, because of the information offered on the site. The site is also intriguing because of the various activities you can take part in when using the site. It gives a more in depth look into how one may communicate with others over a form of Social Media offered in Switzerland [the “The Local dating site”, Jobs offered, and the community posting]. The news offered on the website is far above other websites, that I have found that are considered a “Social Media” source. There are many interactive details offered on the website, but the news provided is relevant and true to what is going on within the country. There is a local point of view based on the dating site provided and some of the other local stories that are written about in the news section, but there is also a national point of view concerning the country as a whole. The target audience for this source is someone who does a light search on an event [political, social, etc] concerning Switzerland, and finds an article on this website that gives some more information about the topic. They are not a nationally acclaimed news broadcaster, but if you are looking for interesting stories, events, or even just to get a little bit more information about a national story, this website will do that for you.

Social Media Source #2: The Swiss Info.ch Twitter page

https://twitter.com/swissinfo_en?lang=en

Language: English

The Swiss Info’s twitter page offers news reports and information from current Swiss citizens in real time in an efficient tweet. A huge strength of this source is the ability for the user to see all of the other top Swiss news contributor’s pages on their feed. For example, you can view the House of Switzerland’s twitter feed, and the Switzerland News twitter feed. Both of these offer news reports concerning my country. The twitter feed of all three is a great Social Media source because of the ease of finding information, and the fast rate at which information is being updated on every page. This source, along with the other Swiss pages you can view on twitter, is updated very regularly on a daily basis. Since it is updated daily, it would be best for those who want to use this source to either: create a Twitter account to follow them, or follow the account from their own personal page. If you turn on your notifications, you will be able to get the most up to date information provided from the Twitter account as it happens.

This source is valuable for those wishing to learn more about Switzerland, because of the relevance and popularity of twitter as a news media source. It was very easy to find Swiss news sources on twitter, and to see how regularly information is updated. This brings a sense of comfort knowing that you, as the user, can feel like you are getting the most up to date and current information from the pages you are following.

NEW MEDIA SOURCES:

New Media Source #1: SWI – Swiss Web Info

https://www.swissinfo.ch

Language: English

This website has been mentioned in many different articles that I have read during my research about Switzerland. It is a hub of Swiss news, that is offered in nine different languages. The swissinfo.ch website used to have a radio show, the Swiss Radio International [SRI], which had its last programming on 30 October 2004. The SRI show was one of the longest lasting radio shows in Swiss history, airing for over 70 years. This information is listed on the SWI website, because the information that was broadcasted on the radio show, was transferred over to a web only platform. A strength of this source is the authenticity it holds. The transition of the SRI to the SWI signals to one that the Swiss Info has been a long-used source for news and information concerning the country.

The information offered on this website consists of: national topics, political spheres, human interest pieces, law, and business/tech savvy articles concerning Switzerland and other countries. You can find articles that concern only Switzerland, but they offer information and stories that have occurred outside of the country. When reading those particular stories, there is always a tie back to Switzerland, for example a story about an event that occurred in France is listed on the website, because when you click on it you find that it involves someone who is a Swiss Native or used to work in Switzerland. This is a strength of the source, because you get to see local, and national news coverage from within Switzerland, but there is also an outreach to other countries close or around Switzerland. The contributors are trying to make sure that each article or news presented on the website has something to do with Switzerland in some small way.

This source is valuable to those who are wishing to learn more about Switzerland, because they offer news that is both good and bad for the “image” of Switzerland. You are able to find pieces that celebrate the wonders of the country, but you are also able to read pieces that highlight certain downfalls. This is a definite strength of the website. If a student is ever wanting to read about a news event, and see the other side of the issue, they would be able to find that on this website. It does not provide only a “squeaky clean – Switzerland is great!” point of view.

New Media Source #2: Deutsche Welle Online

http://www.dw.com/search/en?searchNavigationId=9097&languageCode=en&origin=gN&item=switzerland

Language: English

This source is based in Germany, but the expanse of information provided to the reader about Switzerland is amazing. They have current stories, as far back as a few days to a week ago concerning the country. There is a wide variety of different topics covered in the online news articles offered on the DW website. This is a strength of this source concerning Switzerland because, you are able to get a point of view from a contributor that is outside of the country. This is essential when reading about important news articles, so that one can get a different opinion, bias, and outlook concerning the: politics of their country, the tech industry of Switzerland, and it’s sometimes-controversial tax requirements. The contributors of this information are sharing information about events going on in Switzerland, but from an outside the country point of view. There is some bias towards Switzerland in this source, so when reading articles about Switzerland on the DW website, you can sometimes feel a sense of “one country is better than the other”, but there is a mix of perspectives that do compare and contrast the two countries [these countries being Germany and Switzerland].

This source is valuable for one who is wishing to learn more about Switzerland because; the reasons mentioned above, but also, you are able to get “outside the bubble” of only using sources that are generated from inside the country. In order to get a different point of view, one should consider including a new media source from a country that is different from their own, but close enough that it can be compared in some ways.

AUDIO SOURCES:

Audio Source #1: World Radio – Swiss Radio in English

https://worldradio.ch

Language: English

This source offers a wide variety of news and information about Switzerland. It has a wide overview touching on many different subjects. Those of which include: religion, politics, entertainment, classifieds, and radio shows. What can be appreciated the most about this source, is that it is the web edition of a radio show that is streamed in Switzerland. It is offered online in English, with a text base version of the news piece, that one can read while listening to the radio show. The reports concern local, and national news pieces that are deemed “popular”. For example, the local reports you can listen to, are usually about something crazy or super interesting that happened in a small canton or town in Switzerland. On the national level, there is a lot of broader stories being talked about, which concern the general populous. The contributors do not seem to be biased, but there is a lot of stories that only involve Switzerland, and not a lot of mention about the other countries they are involved with. This could be a weakness of this source, because you might be getting one-sided/one point of view reports which could be missing key information that would aid in your understanding of the event being reported on as a whole. This source is valuable for those wishing to learn more about Switzerland because, of the duality that this source holds. One can argue that many more people are willing to listen to a radio report of the news because, it is easier. You as the navigator of this website are able listen to the news reports while reading the text provided, but you can also compare the text stories from this source with those from another – with the added bonus of being able to listen to a contributor speak their report. This is a huge advantage when navigating the Global Info Society because, you are allowing yourself to see more than one perspective at the same time when using this source.

Audio Source #2: SWI swissinfo.ch – YouTube Channel

https://www.youtube.com/user/swissinfovideos/videos

This source is perfect for the Audio Source category because, the content is produced by the same contributors from the swissinfo.ch source. The SWI YouTube channel is set up the same way as every other channel available on YouTube. When you arrive to the channels page, you first see their highlighted video of the week, which is either a video they are trying to promote or is a very popular video for the week. You can then click the Videos tab to see their videos in order of newest to oldest. There is a WIDE variety of information and topics covered in these videos on the channel. From entertainment pieces, cute cartoon videos made by a Swiss artist, to news reports dealing with current topics and issues. Netherlands: Final Information Report

New Media Sources

DutchNews.NL (New Media)

Launched in 2006 and based in Amsterdam, DutchNews.NL is a “provider of quality Dutch news and current affairs in English for an international audience”. This media source reaches nearly 25,000 people daily through their online webpage, digital newsletters and their social media site. DutchNews.NL acts as a kind of online newspaper, free to all, containing articles published daily on a variety of topics, including Politics, Business, Society, Sports. They also included subsections on European and International news. After digging a little deeper, I found that each topic had multiple articles published in the last week, so it seems that it is constantly updated with current news.

I chose this source because it seems to be a comprehensive and complete view on the news in the Netherlands. It covers a multiple array of subjects and is frequently updated. I will use this source to maintain a daily account on happenings in my country. It can be accessed through the web URL www.dutchnews.nl as well as on twitter @DutchNewsNL.

NL Times (New Media)

Another Amsterdam-based websource, NL Times is an online platform that offers English-language news and information about happenings in the Netherlands. Founded as recently as 2013, NL Times provides a modern, almost off-beat source of news, categories entitled “Food” and “Weird” at the top of their homepage. Similar to DutchNews, this source is aimed at American Expats living within the Netherlands, or those who living outside of the country looking for an inside view. A limitation of both of these sources is that insight may be lost in translation. I’m a firm believer that it’s hard to get a truly authentic view of a country when everything is being translated out of the native language, yet these sources are helpful for me when I look to monitor daily happenings in the Netherlands.

This source can be viewed on line at https://nltimes.nl or on twitter @NLtimes. Similar to how I’ve used DutchNews.NL I plan on monitoring this cite once a week, in order to help with global news posts and to stay informed.

BBC News Netherlands (New Media)

I initially planned to stay away from BBC coverage of my country as I wasn’t sure if the source would provide a consistent and heavy enough output of news. Yet when I went to the BBC Netherlands website page I found multiple articles published weekly. Written in English, BBC Netherlands stories include a wide range of topics, from Parliamentary decisions to profile pieces on famous Dutch citizens to sports reports on the Dutch National Soccer Team; I found this source to be quite comprehensive. While each BBC Netherlands news article does not have an author, I assume that these pieces are written from the perspective of a British reporter looking in on Dutch happenings, rather than a writer from the Netherlands.

This source can be viewed at http://www.bbc.com/news/topics/cvenzmgywd2t/netherlands.

IamExpat (New Media)

Founded in 2009, IamExpat is an online media platform created and run by expats currently living in the Netherlands. The site gives “up-to-date information, news, job listings, housing services and lifestyle tips for internationals in the Netherlands”. This source has such a bevy of information I would consider it invaluable for anyone who has decided to live in the Netherlands, coming from another country. Exploring through the webpage I found information on housing in each of Netherland’s major cities, information on how to find education options, upcoming Dutch events and festivals and links to services that are provided to expats. The is also a fairly comprehensive news section of the webpage keeping expats up to date on stories progressing in their country.

This source can be found at https://www.iamexpat.nl/ yet surprisingly do not have a social media presence which I feel would be beneficial to their goal of reaching out to and aiding expats.

Traditional Media Sources

Elsevier Weekblad (Traditional Media)

Elsevier is a weekly news magazine published in the Netherlands and it is the most popular news magazine in the country with a circulation of 86,000 copies as of 2015. Primarily focusing on politics, this magazine has an online component as well with topical subjects as well as opinion pieces. They also try to comment on the most recent happenings around the world, as they have recently devoted entire sections of their website and magazine to Bitcoin and the American Dreamers. This magazine publication also seems to lean right-wing and be very pro-American and tout conservative ideals, manifesting in multiple positive pieces on President Trump. I found it interesting that they also devote large pieces of their publications to a section entitled “Living in America” about how Dutch citizens can earn a living in the States. In fact, more than 88,000 Dutch expats now live in the United States.

I chose this source to get an idea of the political landscape of the Netherlands and to gain an insight on to just one side of the Dutch spectrum. This source can be accessed through the website URL www.elsevierweekblad.nl and on twitter @Else4Weekblad.

De Groene Amsterdammer (Traditional Media)

De Groene Amsterdammer is another weekly periodical published in the Netherlands, based in Amsterdam. This source states that “In a time of intellectual impoverishment, De Groene offers refreshing ideas, new facts and unexpected insights”. De Groene also frequently attempts to uphold the image that they have no commercial interest and limit themselves to the things that “really matter in the world”. It seems that De Groene is the left-wing alternative to Elsevier so I am eager to take articles on similar topics from both sources and to compare the differing viewpoints. The majority of articles seem to be under the subheadings, Arts & Culture, In The World, and Identity Policy.

This is accessible online as well as at www.groene.nl as well as on twitter @DeGroene.

De Telegraaf (Traditional Media)

In contrast to both De Groene Amsterdammer and Elsevier Weekblad, De Telegraaf is a Dutch newspaper published daily rather than weekly. Founded in 1893, it is the largest Dutch daily morning newspaper with a daily circulation of 430,686, though like many traditional media sources, circulation has dropped drastically over the last 15 years, with circulation in 2001 being over 807,000. De Telegraaf is known for having a populist alignment, actively campaigns in political issues and, is often criticized for publishing sensationalized news.

Being a traditional daily newspaper, my way of monitoring is through its website, https://www.telegraaf.nl/, rather than its print publications. De Telegraaf also publishes its major stories on twitter @telegraaf.

Social Media Sources

@NRC Twitter (Social Media)

The Netherlands ranks 4th in the world in use of social networks so it is safe to say social media is a vital source of news for the average Dutch person. After researching the most viewed twitter accounts in the Netherlands in reference to daily news, I found @NRC, the social network proponent of NRC Media. They have over 550,000 followers and tweet daily on national news. They cover a variety of topics including technology, education and business. The account tweets out news constantly as there are normally 4 articles posted hourly. As social media is one of the main ways I as a student receive news, I wanted to use this source to show how the social aspect of media is being used in my country. The NRC twitter is accessible throughhttps://twitter.com/nrc.

@AT5 (Social Media)

While searching for a new social media source to add to my network, I came across the tool “social baker”. This is website that allows you to place in a variety of stipulations including industry and country, and it will find social media accounts that match that. I searched daily news in the Netherlands and found @AT5, the local news twitter account for Amsterdam. Social Baker stated how many followers it had, 548,257, as well as how fast it was growing. @AT5 is the fastest growing twitter account in the Netherlands, gaining nearly 200 followers daily. Similarly to news accounts in the US, @AT5’s tweets give a brief sentence headline for  a news story and provide a link to an article with more detail.

This source is purely in the Dutch language, so would not be the most helpful for me to monitor, so when it comes to social media, I have chosen to follow the @DutchNews.NL account which tweets in English.

Audio/Visual Sources

NOS Journaal (Audio/Visual)

NOS Journaal is a television program aired in the Netherlands that informs viewers of the latest news from 6:30 am to midnight. The program is aired on NPO 1, the Netherlands first national television station. NOS Journaal’s goal is to provide the most complete picture of the news of the day. I chose this source as I wanted to find the equivalent of a CNN or Fox News station that broadcasts news continuously throughout the day.

BNR Newsradio (Audio/Visual)

BNR Newsradio, first aired in 1998, is the only all-news radio station in Netherlands. The station provides domestic, regional and international news and live news every half-hour. I was really interested in finding the Dutch equivalent to a 700 WLW here in the states. What are the Dutch listening to in the morning on their way to work? BNR has many different programs with varying hosts, these programs include, Better, discussing healthcare, Show Watch, discussing stock exchange and investing, The World, an analyzation of international politics, and many more.

The BNR website, www.bnr.nl, also allows you to stream the station live.

Data Sources

CIA World Factbook – Netherlands (Data Source)

I chose the Netherlands CIA World Factbook page for my Data source because I believe it provides the most comprehensive data on the economy, population, history and politics of the Netherlands. The Factbook is a credible source that will allow me to quickly access quantitative date over time, examples include GDP across varying years, or percentages of population that use the internet. Unfortunately, CIA World Factbook, while objective, offers a very limited and basic set of data values. For my next data source I plan on finding a source that offers a variety of different surveys and information sets on the Netherlands Society.

The CIA World Factbook is easily accessed by web at https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/nl.html.

 Survey Data Netherlands (Data Source)

Survey Data Netherlands is an archive website containing surveys in which enormous amounts of data are collected. It consists of multiple sources that conduct surveys on the Dutch population on several topics including society, culture, medicine, work and leisure. I was shocked at the amount of data provided; I could type in a keyword and find surveys on so many various talking points. This source provides a much more personal touch to the Netherlands in comparison to just the CIA Factbook profile.

This data is available at www.surveydata.nl.

Germany: Final Information Network

As it currently stands, Germany is one of the most influential agents in Western Europe and the European Union. With its expand economy and agreement into political party convergence, Germany sits as one of many European epicenters for news. Naturally, news coverage of Germany and the events that occur in and with it is dense and plentiful. That is why this Information Network has been created.

The purpose of this Network is to give a comprehensive and condensed mapping of where to go for credible information on Germany. The Network can be broken down into multiple categories where each source will cover some type of German-related news. Within each category are sources that present different perspectives. These perspectives give different points of view to news as it happens in Germany through an unbiased and biased lens. It is important to note that Germany has upwards of six major political parties. Biased perspectives are used in this Network to gain an understanding of political standings after using unbiased sources to read of an event that occurs.

Genießen! (Enjoy!)

Data Sources:

Data sources are among the most unbiased and factual sources that can be found. The following databases provide statistical information about Germany. It is best to use these sources as a background knowledge or source to go to in order to verify information

Europa World Plus

Europa World Plus is an international reference series that provides key surveys for more than 250 countries around the world. The almanac is overseen through the worldwide publisher of Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group with data being provided from numerous sources that can be accessed through each country’s bibliography. For Germany, the main statistics appear to come from the 2015 census. You may choose a country such as Germany and view its history, demographics, and specific statistics such as population, external trade, and industry from the last updated period. This site is updated on an annual basis as censuses are created on this timeframe. This site can be accessed through OhioLink or any other library site that has authorization to use it on a subscription based fee. For Ohio State Students, search Europa through http://library.ohio-state.edu/record=e1000527.

Europa World Plus began in the United Kingdom and is written in the English language. This data source is based on statistical evidence so it takes an objective perspective. This source is vital in determining what information is true in a news post. It is a easy to follow fact checker. A downside of this source is that it takes longer to update data than news sources. However, this source is still valuable because it offers a basis to determine the validity of information online.

Deutsche Bundesbank Eurosystem

The Deutsche Bundesbank Eurosystem is a catalogued data source that lists statistics of a myriad of accounting systems, markets, finances, and sectors within Germany. The DBE lists graphs and stats about anything related to German economy within the respect of confidential information. The DBE is advised and processed through the European Central Bank in tandem with the German financial department. This source is another fact-based format that gives objective information about financial patterns in the German economy. The DBE updates quarterly as it tends to follow trends within the stock market. It can and does update sporadically with census business information. This source can be accessed through the DBE’s main website; https://www.bundesbank.de/Navigation/EN/Bundesbank/Eurosystem/eurosystem.html

Even though the DBE originated in Germany and is maintained there currently, the language that it is written in is English. It can be assumed that English is used to provide information to a universal audience rather than just the German state. As with Europa World Plus, DBE provides objective information. This information focuses solely on German economy. This source provides another fact checking link for someone who wants to look further into the validity of a news story. However, this source is not easy to navigate. If you are not familiar with economic lingo, finding your way to a specific data source will be a task. Overall, this source is valuable to have when pursuing background information on a news story.

Traditional Sources:

Traditional sources have a more familiar tone. Each source is related to a type of news broadcasting site that provides general stories of things happening either in a specific part of Germany or over the entirety of the country. Each one will have a different perspective. The main intention of each source is to provide an objective synopsis with a certain emphasis of political opinion depending on which source is used.

DeutscheWelle.com

DW.com is a German news site that provides newspaper articles on their website in over 30 languages including English. Similar to the layout of CNN.com, users can choose from categories to read on articles of news, sports, culture, and more. All articles are run through the Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster.  This source is updated hourly as it is one of Germany’s largest distributors of news. This source can easily be accessed through http://www.dw.com/en/top-stories/s-9097 or through their Twitter @DeutschWelle.

Naturally, Deutsche Welle is located in Bonn, Germany. Every post, as well as TV and videos, is written and presented in English. The aim of DW is to broadcast information for the world about Germany. With this being said, one should be weary of the information they receive through this source since it is directed at a foreign audience. More research into smaller or equally reputable German papers is advised since the full story may sometimes not be reached. This site is very good for non-German speakers and provides short synopsis of stories that are published in Germany. Overall, this source is valuable to a person that is new to German news. It is written in English and the website is easy to navigate.

Der Tagesspiegel

Der Tagesspiegel is Berlin’s daily newspaper that covers stories and news events within the city and surrounding areas. It covers the northeast region in terms of German broadcasting and provides unbiased information to German citizens. Many articles fail to mention an author, so it is assumed that Der Tagesspiegel runs articles through its main distribution network under its own name. This source is updated hourly if not sooner and works similarly to a local online city newspaper with printed copies available daily in Berlin. This site can be accessed through https://www.tagesspiegel.de

Der Tagesspiegel is located within Berlin, Germany and is published in the German language. This website provides information in a similar way to The Columbus Dispatch. Anything local and nationally noteworthy is posted to the Berlin populace. It appears that Der Tagesspiegel takes an objective approach. Articles that I have read do not suggest political leaning. Since its first publishing in 1945, it seems that this company has stayed on track to providing just the facts. This is great if you are a German speaker. If you are not, then this source is not the best. Since it works similarly to a local American site, this source is valuable in finding news stories that Germans want to see. So long as you can understand some German, this source is a good fit in the Network!

Die Welt:

Die Welt is a similar news source to that of Der Tagesspiegel in the sense of its history and credibility. Die Welt provides German citizens with everyday news sources through articles, videos and interviews. Articles can be categorized between politics, live tv, sports, and economy.

The major difference between the two sources is that Die Welt is a known conservative news outlet. Many articles favor a right-wing perspective. Die Welt tends to provide more information about right leaning parties such as the SPD or Alternative für Deutschland. Die Welt is run by head publisher Thomas Schmid who oversees authors and their publications of German politics. This source is updated daily in accordance to political events that occur in Germany. This site can be accessed by monthly membership through the website https://www.welt.de.

Die Welt is located in Berlin, Germany and acts as a more personalized source to those that have conservative views. This site is published through Axel Springer SE, the largest news distributor in Europe. For Germany, Die Welt is the broadsheet newscast. This site is written completely in German and focuses mainly on political events that occur in Germany. A solid strength of this source would be its coverage on events. If there is a lack of knowledge about something going on in German parliament, Die Welt is thorough in describing the structure and how it is supposed to look. However, since Die Welt is a conservative leaning broadcastor, there tends to be a trickle of bias that occurs in its articles. Overall, this source is valuable in understanding political opinion. If you are used to getting your information mainly from a liberal source, check out Die Welt to see the other half of the coin.

Gruene.de

Gruene is a political party website that provides opinion based stories and motives for Die Grünen. This site is run by Die Grünen, a liberal political party within German parliament that focuses on nature conservatism and democratic practices. This source is set up in a newsletter format to try and persuade a reader to join Die Grünen. It has articles and announcements about things happening in and around Germany in conjunction with the political party. This site appears to be updated on a monthly basis as more events are created for the event. It can be accessed through https://www.gruene.de/startseite.html

This source is based in Berlin, Germany as Die Grünen’s headquarters are located there. The website is written in German as to entice the German citizen. The information that can mainly be found there is facts regarding the party and events occurring with them. Of course, the perspective of this website is liberal and based solely on Die Grünen. I chose this site due to the lack of knowledge of political parties. In order to understand German politics, one must first know of every political party. Die Grünen is a small party among six more. This site was provided to give context and background of political entities when reading about them in the paper. A major downside to this source is that it only provides information to one party. For this reason I will provide a wikipedia link below that points to other parties and their overviews. Overall, this source is valuable in understanding the motives and actions that political parties have. In turn, this will make reading news stories easier to understand since more background knowledge is present.

Visual & Audio Sources:

Visual and audio sources look to provide news and information in a new way. The following sources are easier to access because of the audiences they wish to reach. They are strong in their ability to reach a wider range of people and their free access. However, it would be ill-advised to use these as your only source. While these sources entertain, they do not cover stories as in depth as other sources. My advice is to play around with these sources and get a good idea about a topic. Then, do more research with the rest of the Network to find out more details within the story.

Ardmediathek.de

This site covers the broad category of German culture within entertainment, news, sports, and even the stock exchange. Ardmediathek is run by the ARD organization which stands for The Working Group of the Federal Republic of Germany’s Public Broadcasters (translated). This site is used primarily as a German media outlet for ease of access and information among German citizens, similar to a tv network such as ShowTime having an online site but for numerous networks piled into one . It is updated daily with new articles on German artists and political events. More importantly, this site offers live German TV at any time of the day. The directory of mediathek is set up similarly to any news station website within the United States with the intention of being free as well as an open source to the public. You can access this free to use site through http://www.ardmediathek.de

ARD is based in Berlin, Germany. The entire network is in the German language since the target audience are citizens of Germany. This source is unique because almost all information from other sources aside from data sources can be found on it. It is an expansive site that covers all things German. However, it is mostly an entertainment source. The source seems to not take a perspective at all and simply provides information, radio, and entertainment to its listeners. This source is a great place to find out about German culture. There are many satirical comedy shows that depict what’s going on in Germany as well as professional talk shows. Whatever form of media you prefer, ARD has it. A weakness however would be that it is a bit difficult to find specific things being a non-native German speaker. Since we are using this as a means to understand German culture, it is difficult to know where to go. Even with informative tabs to direct, many of the videos seem like small supplemental videos similar to YouTube. It’s almost as if you need a German to help you through the many videos and directories. Overall, if you are able to work your way into ARD, this source is valuable in adopting and learning about German culture and big news. It gives the user an easier way to take in information other than a traditional source.

Deutschlandfunk.de

Deutschlandfunk is a radio website that provides daily news and entertainment stories about events that are occurring both nationally and internationally. Spoken in German, the numerous hosts talk about topics ranging from Merkel to München. The entire operation is run by Deutschlandradio, a national German radio broadcaster. There are talk shows that go on to talk about German politics and others that dissent on the latest fashion trends. Deutschlandfunk acts similarly to a mini podcasts aggregate in its numerous audio shows and their short durations of less than 5 minutes. The site updates hourly as more mini-casts are added per category. This site can be accessed through http://www.deutschlandfunk.de

This source is made up of numerous radio stations located around Germany. All speakers are German native. On some occasion there are English episodes, but this is rare. The most popular sources of information are politics and daily news. Typically, the podcast speakers try and keep an unbiased perspective. They follow a similar pattern to NPR in America. However, like NPR, Deutschlandfunk has a hard time trying to hide its liberal roots. So, it is safe to assume that this source lies slightly on the left. This source is a refreshing alternative to receiving information. It is easy to put on a podcast and go about your day while listening to all things happening in Germany. However, as was noted, this source does lean liberal which adds a weakness in terms of wanting an unbiased perspective. Likewise, not knowing any German will in no way help if you’re listening to a German podcast! Overall, this source does well on adding a new type of source to information intake. It is easy to understand and can be accessed anywhere.

Euronews.de

Euronews is a multilingual news source that provides information about almost every country in Europe. Euronews is run by CEO Michael Peters and trickles down in command to distinct news stations within each country. These stations provide information to the main site that publishes stories for all of Europe. Each article provides an author’s name. This source is updated by the minute. The main website can be accessed through http://www.euronews.com. Germany is a subcategory among the main stories and can be reached by typing  ‘Germany’ into the search bar.

Euronews is based in Lyon, France. Depending on where you access the site, Euro News can be written in numerous languages. Assuming that you are from an English speaking country, using ‘.com’ as your end command will take you to the Euronews site that is written in English. The information that can be found here are major events that occur around the world. The source take an objective perspective since it is at an international scale. I find this source to be very strong by looking at Germany as a whole and covering what it does internationally with other countries. Some weaknesses of this site would include that it does not go extremely in depth with many of its stories and that you need to search deeper to find stories about Germany since it covers so many more countries. Overall, this site is a great source to start if you are looking for problems or events occurring with Germany and other countries or Germany itself. It gives an overview of an event and by using other sources in this network more information can easily be discovered.

New Media Sources:

New media sources get you as close to the action as you can get without being there. Primarily consisting of blog posts, these sources take accounts of citizen reporting within Germany and publish them to a large audience. To note, some sites and authors can pose biases based on political stances or affiliation to the state. The sources used in the Network are not biased, but it is still crucial to pay close attention to sources that may be and keep note.

Global Voices

Written by citizen reporters and bloggers, Global Voices depicts the people’s voice on what is going on in their region of the world. Global Voices is an international community and does not hold ownership over any authors or publications. The formatting would be to follow specific writers based on their appeal, country of interest, and credibility. This source does not update as frequently as traditional or media sources. Typically, it will update weekly or bi-weekly if you are following a specific country. To reach this source, visit https://globalvoices.org and find Germany under the ‘Europe’ tab.

Global Voices was originally founded at Harvard in the United States but holds no place of origin according to its motif of being a ‘global voice’. Most blog posts are written in English, but some can be in an author’s native language depending on the audience they are writing to. Typically, these sources will cover information ranging from citizen’s emotion towards a country’s decision or some type of new knowledge about a country that was not previously known. This can be a strength to the Network since we can learn about new information that wasn’t covered in previous publishing. Likewise, it gives new perspective of a person who is actually going though these events rather than a news site covering events. However, there can tend to be some bias. Global Voices tends to keep an objective stance, but with personal experience comes personal opinion. It is important to note emotion alongside these stories. Overall, this is a good source since it provides a new perspective that gives bias based on actual account (and in some cases not actual, so watch out!). It provides more information about what the public thinks about what’s going on in Germany.

Spreeblick

Spreeblick is an open source German blogging aggregate that provides many news stories via free online access. This site is known in Germany and one of the most popular alternative information sources in the country. This site is also run by local bloggers that live in and around Germany. This source is updated on a daily to weekly basis, making it a bit more dependable. This site can be accessed through http://www.spreeblick.com

Spreeblick began in Berlin, Germany and has grown to become a nationally recognized blog aggregate network. The blog posts are primarily written in German with a small amount being written in English and neighboring country languages (Austrian, Polish, etc). Many bloggers post about entertainment topics within Germany while a great deal of many others talk politics and news. Spreeblick is of a younger generation of Germans, so the perspective seems to take a liberal tone. However, there are numerous articles that tend to lean left as well. With so many different political views, the perspective seems to balance itself out in terms of not taking a political stance. This source has a strength of playing both sides of the political field. However, since it is such a new network, a weakness is that this source is not as well known as other sources. As it grows in popularity it will surely gain more users and writers. This source is valuable in finding out more about events going on within Germany. It takes a deeper dive into the citizen’s views and provides further insight that one may not have gotten in a traditional source.

Social Media Sources:

Social media sources provide a real time look at what people think about what’s going on around the world. This is perhaps the most commonly used source since the stories and opinions that are collected are from citizens. In order to get the full effect of social media sources, it is crucial to understand the level of bias that will inevitably come into play. Many times you will be looking at someone’s opinion, not a news story. Social media is fast and large. Sifting through the data is taxing, but well worth finding popular opinion about what people think about certain topics in the world.

Twitter Filters

Twitter is a heavy source of opinion in the social network of apps. With the ‘advanced search’ option, you are able to filter through the tsunami of tweets to view topics that are tailored to your liking. The authors of this source are every user that posts a ‘tweet’. Using hashtags, one can search certain topics and see public opinion of matters occuring around the world. For instance, using the two keywords ‘Germany’ and ‘Immigration’, one can see public oponion about the political dilemma going on in Germany. This source is updated by the second as millions of users post at any given time. This source can be found in the ‘Advanced Search’ box on Twitter.com. You must have an account to access this feature.

Twitter headquarters is located in San Francisco, California. Twitter is posted in numerous languages and any can be found depending on who you follow and what you are looking for. Twitter is a source that provides both story and opinion. The users make up primarily the opinion side while other companies, business and news sites make profiles for the users. There is no clear perspective on this app since it is open to any and all users. Being an avid user, I have experienced every political stance and opinion. This source is great if you want to see what the world has to say about certain topics. It can provide the viewpoint of those that don’t often have a voice. However, many people base their posts only on opinion rather than any research. The extreme bias that comes into play can be due to lack of knowledge. Because of this Twitter can be damaging when trying to learn more about a topic. Overall, this source is beneficial when all information about a story is known and becomes useful to see popular opinion.

Tandem Language App

Tandem is a crowd-funded mobile device app that acts first and foremost as a language learning tool. Through registering and acceptance into the application, a user is able to pick languages that they want to learn and find matches to others that are trying to learn their native language (ie: English). Through this app, people are able to discuss anything and everything while learning new languages.  This source does not update as the previous sources do. The user is responsible for finding out information by talking with another person through language acquisition. This source can be accessed by downloading the Tandem app via mobile device. You must apply to be accepted into this application. This allows for more privacy and a more stable community. More information can be read on the apps website at Tandem.net.

There is no country of origin that is related to Tandem. By using English to help non-native speakers learn, Tandem uses any language that you want to learn when discussing topics about politics, business, or culture. There are many perspectives that can be found on Tandem. If you know of topics that have political ties to them you can search and find people that are interested in sharing that perspective. This source is a great way to get a one-on-on real time opinion on what’s going on in Germany. A weakness of this topic is that people may not want to talk about specific topics. If you push too hard, that may make some uncomfortable. A word of advice is to just allow conversation to flow and see what information you can get from it. At that, another weakness would be that you may not get all the information you’re seeking from the source as well as that person may not know anything about it! Overall, Tandem is a valuable way to get a one-on-one experience with someone who lives in the events that you’re interested in.

Italy – Country Report: Information Network Final

Title: Rai News

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: Visual/audio

Updated daily

How to access: http://www.rainews.it / Twitter @RaiNews

Description: This source is an Italian news channel and website that is known as the biggest news channel in Italy. It is in Italian, and it covers both national and international news, focusing more on national news stories. The source’s perspective has been considered to be geared more towards the conservative government, but its greatest strength would be that it covers such a wide array of topics. The biggest weakness would be its biased point of view, though it is not always inherently clear when reading the articles. This source is valuable to those wanting to learn more about Italy because since it is the biggest news source in Italy, those reading articles on this site can see a news source that citizens all over Italy use daily.

Title: La Repubblica

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: Newspaper

Updated daily

How to access: http://www.repubblica.it / Twitter @repubblica

Description: This source is an Italian newspaper that is a very popular general-interest source based out of Rome. It has been around since 1976 and updates daily, with local editions in cities all over the country, such as Bari, Bologna, Florence, Genova, Milan, Naples, Palermo, Parma, and Torino. Their website focuses on both national and international news stories, and local stories in the local editions. This newspaper is known to lean left in their reports, and this bias is their biggest weakness. It is valuable for those wanting to learn about Italy because it not only gives national and international news from an Italian viewpoint, but it covers local stories as well.

Title: The Local.it

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: Social media

Updated daily

How to access: https://www.thelocal.it / Twitter @TheLocalItaly

Description: This source is basically Italian news in English, including international news that specifically pertains to Italy. This website also has other countries it focuses on in Europe, and their goal is to be “a window on life in other cultures”. It is useful to have sources that are not in Italian or based in Italy because it gives an outside point of view on Italian issues, and when comparing to other Italian sources it is easy to see some of the differences on how these stories are portrayed.

Title: Corriere della Sera

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: Newspaper

Updated daily

How to access: http://www.corriere.it/index.shtml?refresh_ce / Twitter @Corriere

Description: This source is an Italian newspaper that is one of the most well-known daily newspapers in Italy. It is in Italian, and has a moderate, pro-government standpoint. This source covers national news mostly, and focuses in on specific regions and even specific cities within those regions, giving a variety of stories from everywhere in Italy. This source is useful for those wishing to learn more about Italy because it gives more of a variety of stories and it even is in Italian, so if one is learning Italian it can be interesting to get the perspectives of different cities around the country while improving their reading skills.

Title: CIA World Factbook

Author: United States government

Type of source: Data

Updated sporadically

How to access: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/resources/the-world-factbook/geos/it.html

Description: This source is a government database in English that has information on all countries in the world, with specific data and facts on each of them. It is divided into different categories that help you identify what exactly you are looking for, ranging from geography to transnational issues. This source is more than likely at least a little bit biased because it is looking through the lens of the United States looking at other countries around the world. It can be a helpful source still because the actual facts, such as GDP, are correct and can help with just general learning about a country.

 Title: Italy Chronicles

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: New media

Updated sporadically

How to access: http://italychronicles.com / Twitter @newsfromitaly

Description: This source is a pretty well-known blog that follows different news stories from Italy. It has been running since 2005 and the founder, Alex Roe, has been cited in the Italian press, has been cited in Wikipedia and the Huffington Post, and has also been a commentator on affairs in Italy on the Australian radio. This source is also useful in the sense that it is not based in Italy, with not only news stories but travel advice and stories as well.

Title: Il Sole 24 Ore

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: Traditional

Updated daily

How to access: http://www.ilsole24ore.com/?refresh_ce=1 / Twitter @IlSole24ORE

Description: This source is a very well-known daily Italian newspaper that is located in Milan, in Northern Italy. This source has plenty of categories, including Italy (national and regional news), world news, and then it divides into specific categories such as finance or business. This source leans towards being conservative, but is not terribly biased in this way. It is a useful source for those wanting to learn about Italy because since it is such a well-known newspaper and covers different regions than some of the other sources I’ve listed, it gives a broader perspective into the lives of Italian citizens and how they get their news.

Title: Italian News Clicks

Author: Emmanuel College

Type of source: New media

Updated sporadically

How to access: http://italiannewsclicks.blogs.emmanuel.edu/

Description: This source is through Emmanuel College and is “an easy reader of selected clips from the Italian press designed to provide students, teachers, scholars, and lovers of Italian language and culture with a realistic and lively sampling of everyday life and, a friendly introduction to major Italian newspapers and columns”, according to the header. Since it is a sampling, it samples national news from around the country. It seems to be sporadic when updating, so it is not the best news source if one is looking for a daily or even weekly source for their Italian news, but it can be useful to see how people who are not from Italy (specifically Americans in this case) view Italian news and how they can portray their news even when they do not live there or experience it firsthand.

Description: This source is a Twitter account of a weekly printed newspaper that updates with stories about Italian affairs and the Mediterranean. This source is in English, and is written to provide an English version of the tabloid free press in various regions of Italy. Following the Twitter is a bit different than following a regular news source since there is not a specific way to find exactly something you’re looking for if you don’t search for it specifically in the Twitter itself. You can browse, but it is easier to use the search function. This source can help one learn more about Italy from a social media standpoint, as one can get an idea of how Twitter can be used as a news source.

Title: OECD Data

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: Data

Updated sporadically

How to access: https://data.oecd.org/italy.htm and http://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/economics/country-statistical-profile-italy_20752288-table-ita

Description: This source is more of a source for specifically data on Italy. It has many graphs and other graphics on different aspects of Italy, such as agriculture, development, and education. It is not clear how often this source is updated, but if I were to guess it would be at least annually to reflect the previous year’s statistics as well. It not only has graphs of these topics, but has graphics of rank, showing where Italy stands in relation to other countries around the world. This source can be helpful when learning about Italy because it gives more of a general overview of data based information.

How to access: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiT6hzoVYo26aXj4icVBgDw/featured

Description: This source is a YouTube channel with videos about political news in Italy, mostly national politics. It is mostly opinions of various citizens who run the channel, and it has garnered a large following, probably of people with like views as the people who post these videos. This source seems to be more biased because these people have similar points of view when they make their videos, but it can be helpful when trying to learn about Italy because of this source being biased. It helps one learn not to only trust one source.

Title: Gazzetta del Sud

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: Newspaper

Updated daily

How to access: http://www.gazzettadelsud.it / Twitter @GazzettaDelSud

Description: This source is a pretty well-known Italian newspaper source that is not as widely used, because it focuses on Southern Italy. It not only covers national Italian stories, but specifically southern news, and even divides into the Southern Italian regions and focuses in on Sicily and Calabria. This source is one of the only sources that focuses on Southern Italy and these regions specifically, which again gives a broader perspective when learning about Italy and reading Italian news.

Title: Alguer.it

Author: Multiple authors

Type of source: Newspaper

Updated daily

How to access: http://alguer.it/ / Twitter @AlguerIT

Description: This newspaper source is a city specific source based out of Alghero in Sardinia, an island off the west coast of Italy that is considered part of the country. The name of this news source (Alguer) is the Catalan word for Alghero, though the website is completely in Italian. This source gives a very specific point of view from this city, and has other local editions from Cagliari, Sassari, Olbia, Nuoro, Oristano, and Porto Torres, which are all cities in Sardinia. This source can be useful when learning about Italy because it gives the perspective from the Sardinian island, when most of the news tends to be Northern Italy or Southern Italy. This is the only source on my list that specifically adheres to one region, and it is interesting to get that perspective.

Nigeria: Final Information Network

Traditional Sources

Vanguard: This is a daily newspaper in English straight out of Lagos, Nigeria that has been published by Vanguard Media since 1983. This source includes access to the latest news on politics, business, technology, style, and entertainment from Nigeria. According to the source: “Media: Is Bola Tinubu The Biggest Media Entrepreneur in Nigeria?”. M2 Marketing Management, 2008, this is one of the few publications in Nigeria thought to be free from political control and influence. As this corruption is a big problem in Nigeria, Vanguard will be an invaluable source of objective information. I selected this source because of its reputation and popularity in Nigeria.

The online version of the newspaper, https://www.vanguardngr.com, provides easy access to the news stories, as well as the publication’s account on Twitter, @vanguardngrnews. This source is updated hourly.

The Punch:  Much like Vanguard, this is a daily newspaper published in English with an online version, http://punchng.com, and an official Twitter, @MobilePunch. This newspaper was founded in 1971 in Nigeria and is published by Ajibola Ogunsola. According to the website, The Punch is the “most widely read newspaper in Nigeria.” A 2014 article from the “About Us” page on the website alleges that the Research and Marketing Services (RMS) Lagos conducted a “current” survey in which The Punch, Saturday Punch, and Sunday Punch constituted the most widely read publications in Nigeria. (https://web.archive.org/web/20031015215403/http://www.punchng.com/aboutus#mission).

I also selected this source because of its reputation and popularity in Nigeria.

The Independent UK:  The Independent is a UK-based news publication that has a complete collection of articles and commentary on Nigeria. Although this is not a newspaper that originates from Nigeria, The Independent is a reputable British online newspaper (which won the British Press Awards in 2004) and which has been in publication since 1986. Articles are added daily. I chose this source because of the newspaper’s vast collection of articles on Nigeria and its reliance on freelance journalists to report internationally, allowing for the inclusion of more global perspectives. Additionally, the UK and Nigeria share a deep historical and cultural connection, due to Britain’s history of colonization in this country and the large number of Nigerian-Brits that live in England today.

The Independent has a Twitter account (@Independent), useful for keeping up to date with their stories/reporting on Nigeria. (https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/Nigeria)

The Nation Nigeria: The Nation is an English-language, daily newspaper that is published in Lagos, Nigeria. According to 2009 and 2011 reports by the Advertiser’s Association of Nigeria, The Nation was the 2nd most-read newspaper in Nigeria. According to the website, the paper stands for “freedom, justice, and the market economy.” In the “About Us” section of the newspaper’s website, it states that the target audience is the business and political elite, the affluent, and the upwardly mobile. The newspaper is owned by publishing company, Vintage Press Limited, whose “Who We Are” section describes The Nation as “a quality, national, newspaper with credible and dependable information. Not beholden to any interest group. Loyalty is to the nation.” The website is updated daily.

I chose this source because it adds a conservative perspective to my Information Network. Unlike more general news sources like The Punch and Vanguard, The Nation seems to target a more specific audience, the elite class. Additionally, The Nation focuses more on Nigerian business and economy than my other sources, and these aspects are important in the understanding of the economic makeup of a country. The Daily Trust: The Daily Trust is a daily Nigerian news website that is owned by a private publishing company called Media Trust, which also owns a weekly edition called The Weekly Trust. The company is based in Abuja, Nigeria and is produced in English. According to The Guardian, a British-based publication with ties to Nigeria, both newspapers rank among the top seven for advertising revenue in Nigeria. According to the website, this publication specializes in Nigerian breaking news and daily life.

Kabiru A Yusuf, chairman of the Media Trust Board, was the Southern African Correspondent of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) prior to venturing into local Nigerian publications. This provides a unique, dual perspective to my Information Network, because the chairman has had experience working with both an international publication and a national publication. Additionally, the website includes pages for Agriculture, IT, and Women in Business, which none of my other traditional news sources included. I think the IT page is especially relevant to this course, because it is an entire homepage dedicated to information technology, including stories on Facebook, Microsoft developments, and other prominent tech news.  News Media Sources

Naij.com: According to Alexa, an Amazon Company tool, Naij.com is the 7thmost visited website in Nigeria (https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/naij.com), and according to another news website, YNaija, naij.com is a “Nigerian news and entertainment portal that features aggregated news content,” (https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/naij.com). The official website is https://www.naija.ng, and the accompanying Twitter is @naijcom.

Unlike my other two sources, naij.com is not a newspaper, rather a news website created in 2012 in Lagos and is part of the global consumer internet company, Genesis Media. Another unique feature to this source is the available content based on user-submitted stories. I think that this source will provide a different, and more personalized, approach to the news in Nigeria because of this user involvement, but might fail to provide more comprehensive breaking news stories, due to its reliance on reader’s stories, rather than typical journalists.

Nigerian Entertainment Today (NET): NET is a Nigerian newspaper with a popular website of the same name, which specializes in entertainment and breaking celebrity news and interviews; it is updated hourly. According to Amazon’s Alexa software, NET.com is Nigeria’s 33rdmost visited website, meaning that much of the country’s population visits or has visited this site before, its target audience is under age 35. This publication has its headquarters in the capital, Lagos. I selected this source, because it is more like a tabloid or blog than to a traditional news source. Although this source would not report on politics, popular culture is also important to the identity of a country (Nollywood, for example, is extremely important to Nigerian culture and is extensively covered by the NET) and this is currently the only source in my Information Network that deals specifically with this type of news coverage.

The NET has a Twitter account, @theNETng.

Social Media Source

President Buhari: I will be following Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari (@MBuhari) on Twitter. My first 3 sources are following this account, and I believe that it is important to stay up-to-date with what the leader of a country is telling his own country and the world about news, politics, and policy, whether this information is propaganda or unreliable, or accurate and reliable. This will serve as a point of contrast between what the press is saying and what the head of state is saying. This account does not provide information on who is running the account, but several tweets are in first person, maybe to convince people that the President is doing the tweeting. This account was created in December 2014.

Richard Mofe-Damijo : Nigerian actor, Richard Mofe-Damijo (aka RMD) is one of the most popular actors in Nollywood and has over 1 million followers on Instagram alone, showing his massive influence on Nigerian pop culture. In 2005 RMD won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. According to his website, rmdtheactor.com, he has starred in over 60 movies and TV series, both locally and internationally. I am choosing to follow him because celebrities have a tremendous influence on a country’s culture, and are also often vocal in their own political opinions on what is going on in their country and around the world. Just as I stated that is important to follow a publication that focuses on Nigerian popular culture, I think it is equally important to follow one of the popular culture icons that are so often reported on, to gain a better understanding of Nigeria.

Data Sources:

The World Bank Nigeria: I will be using the official Nigeria page of the World Bank database website (http://www.worldbank.org/en/country/nigeria) to keep informed about Nigeria’s population, GDP, economic growth, and development statistics. This website is published by the World Bank, and Nigeria’s page specifically is directed by Country Director, Rachid Benmessaoud, who is based out of Abuja, Nigeria. The World Bank does not have a Nigeria-specific Twitter account, but rather a “World Bank Africa” account (@WorldBankAfrica). I find this to be odd, seeing as Africa has over 50 independent countries, each with their own regional, cultural, political, and economics needs and differences, but the World Bank is a valuable and reputable source of data.

International Monetary Fund Nigeria: I will be monitoring the IMF reports on Nigeria by checking its webpage on Nigeria (http://www.imf.org/en/Countries/NGA#featured)once a week, for any new information on Nigeria’s economic development. The IMF is a useful database because it shares the 2018 Projected Real GDP, as well as annual reports on Real GDP growth and the inflation rate, starting from 1980. This source will give me a detailed picture of the Nigerian economy and how it improves or worsens with time. The IMF’s Nigeria page is run by Resident Representative, Amine Mati, who is based in Abuja. This source includes daily news reports and articles, but the economic data is updated annually. The target audience for this source appears to be less towards Nigerians themselves and more for scholars and economists who are interested in the economic development and progress of countries on the macro level.

Visual/Audio Sources:

Channels Television is an independent 24-hour news and media channel based in Lagos, Nigeria that is run by owner John Mamoh. This source classifies itself as a “watchdog” of the government, which I believe is invaluable to the press in every country. According to the African Press Organization (APO), Channels TV won the best Nigerian TV award for the 8th time in 2014. The Youtube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/channelsweb) is useful for keeping up to date with Nigerian news via visual information, including interviews with politicians and locals, and events in real time. This source provides live streams daily.

Guardian TV: Guardian TV is the media outlet of The Guardian Nigeria newspaper. This source specializes in science and technology, business, and sports reports, as well as political and breaking news and is updated daily. This source is different than the newspaper edition, because it adds the visual elements of interviews and demonstrations of new technology that is being reported on, for example there is a video titled “What you should know about cerebral palsy” on the homepage which shows a child with cerebral palsy along with text providing information about the condition. This is an effective way to communicate information, because many people would prefer to watch a short video clip, rather than reading an article on the same matter. The targeted audience is adult, educated Nigerians who are interested in keeping up to date with this subject matter. The inclusion of the video of the child allows the viewer to see what cerebral palsy looks like. This source is useful for keeping up to date on any new health, science, and technology reports specifically.

Reflection

To find the sources, I first Googled “top Nigerian Newspapers” and then verified each source with its respective Wikipedia page, then its website, another website that mentions it, and finally, its Twitter account, as Twitter seems to be the easiest and most effective way to stay up to date. Googling terms like “Nigerian Twitter” was not as successful because dozens of unverified accounts were the first to pop up. I learned that searching for international information requires a lot more digging and verifying than American and British publications which I am more familiar with and which I know for a fact are reputable. To add additional sources, I plan on repeating my searching strategy, as well as digging deeper using the LibGuide and other library databases for lesser known sources. Although more difficult than finding news sources from America, finding Nigerian sources was not very difficult. I think this could be because of Nigeria’s close ties to Britain, its status as the most populated African country, and the official language being English; these factors could contribute to the output of readily available information.

To locate new sources for my Information Network, I googled key terms, such as “Top Nigerian news authorities”; “Nigerian Newspapers by popularity”; “Nigerian economic report” etc. I used Wikipedia to get summaries of sources, and then verified them using the citations at the bottoms of the pages. Additionally, I used the LexisNexis database to locate more traditional news sources for my final draft, as the traditional sources were the hardest to find and verify.  Since Nigeria is an English-speaking country, I faced little difficulty utilizing local sources, however, I found that this second time around I had to include some British-based publications (The Independent, the Guardian) which could be because of the Nigerian government’s contentious relationship with local press or less availability of local journalism due to a lack of resources (compared to resource-rich countries like Britain). I have gained a greater appreciation for researching information sources outside of the United States because the lack of familiarity I have with publications outside of my home country (although I am familiar with The Independent and the Guardian because of the US’s close ties with British journalism). I found myself taking more steps to verify new sources than I would with domestic publications because of this unfamiliarity. I think that if Nigeria did not have such close ties to Britain, or was majority English-speaking, many of the stories wouldn’t reach the headlines of international publications, which is a barrier to the global information society.
