Tips from Current and Past Students

I am very pleased with my internship at Grant. We are always encouraged to pursue our passion within the internship. I have a passion in administration, so I helped with intern recruitment, interviews, and development. I have been able to attend several meetings as a guest that have been focused on my interests. All of the extra activities I have wanted to do have been made possible. They are working to even further improve the internship experience and I have no doubt that it will become one of the best internships in Ohio. My peers have other interests and have been involved in different activities than me based on those interests.

I have had a wonderful experience working at Mount Carmel West. The pharmacists, techs, and other interns are fantastic and work together very well. The pharmacy leadership along with several pharmacists have been pushing to grow the intern opportunities. We have been able to complete case presentations as well as help look over patient lab results on the weekends.

My internship at the James has given me many different opportunities over the last few years. I have been able to present 3 posters at ASHP meetings, as well as a potential manuscript based off of the projects that I have completed. The hours are also flexible, which made it easy for me to keep my other internship at Mount Carmel and take on leadership positions in multiple organizations.

I’d suggest students to commit to what they want to get out of it. They need to be motivated to learn from pharmacy experience more so than earning money. Also pay close attention to which pharmacy you’d be working for. Pharmacy experience can change significantly based on whom you learn from. Make sure to learn about preceptors/pharmacists before students start to work.

This internships prepares you very well for whatever you want to pursue, but especially a residency position. The opportunity to complete a research project and take it to ASHP Midyear before P4 year is helpful.

This internship program is by far the most beneficial part of my pharmacy education. I have been introduced to so much clinical work. Before starting my p3 year I already knew how to dose vancomycin, work patients up, and round with the multidisciplinary teams. I also had given a case presentation and was working on a research project for midyear. This job is a very great opportunity, but I would suggest advertising this job to students who really want to learn and want to work a lot. The pharmacists really count on the interns on weekends, but you have to be able to put in the time to be trained as a technician and then as an intern. There are only 2 interns per class so all of the pharmacists are very dedicated to our training. It is a great atmosphere, but it definitely requires students who want/ need to work and are willing to give up a lot of weekends. The first two years have less requirements for weekends.

Apothecare is a unique and wonderful site for an internship or APPE rotation. It is essentially an independent community pharmacy within Southeast, Inc mental health and substance abuse clinic. You have the opportunity to work with some great pharmacists, technicians, and APPE students on rotation, as well as case workers, nurses, and other practitioners in the clinic. We put together adherence packaging for certain clients every 1, 2, or 4 weeks, and we’ve recently started offering MTM and naloxone services. I believe I’m their first intern, and I’m so thankful I’ve had the chance to work there because it is such a fun atmosphere and a unique experience. I imagine that they will only employ one intern at a time, and that they would prefer to hire a P2 (who has been through the mental health module of P+T).

Ask about clinical experiences early on in your internship.
