Psychiatric Pharmacy

Martha P. Frankhauser

MS Pharm, BCPP, FASHP, FAzPA

By: Joseph Cusimano, PharmD candidate (Class of 2018)

In December 2016, I had the pleasure of conducting an informational interview with Martha (Martie) Fankhauser about her 40-year career in neuropsychiatric pharmacy and academia. I first met Ms. Fankhauser at the Arizona Pharmacy Association (AzPA) Annual Conference in 2016, during which she gave two lectures and co-presented the Psychiatric Certificate Program, and have stayed in touch with her since.  Ms. Fankhauser’s career in pharmacy began in Kansas, though it can probably be traced back to her father’s family-run pharmacy. From high school to college, she took an interest in psychology as well; as such, it was only natural that she would one day combine her family’s trade with her interest in how the mind works.

Dr. Ken Hale is a well-known figure in OSU’s College of Pharmacy.  A cherished professor among numerous students, Dr. Hale specializes in teaching introduction to pharmacy and prescription drug misuse and prevention.  He became inspired to start the college’s GenerationRx initiative after seeing an upswing in overdoses, with the hope to address and combat medication misuse.  The Generation Rx Lab is a fun and innovative educational experience within the Labs in Life exhibit at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI). In this lab, COSI visitors of all ages can conduct engaging, hands-on experiments as they learn about the science of drugs.
