OptoMETRICS

One key challenge of any health care provider is to ensure that patients show up for scheduled appointments. The national show rate (percentage of scheduled appointments who actually show up) is approximately 80% across all health care providers and only 75% for optometry appointments. The main clinic has implemented a number of practice management techniques to limit the number of no-shows and last minute cancellations to achieve our show rate goal of 90% throughout each clinic service. The efforts of our exemplary clinic staff has allowed each main clinic service (PVC, AOC, VT, CL, LVR, BVP) to reach this 90% show rate goal for each of the last four academic years with the Vision Therapy Service leading the way with our top average show rate of 95.0%!

OptoMETRICS

  • Part of our previous strategic plan was to increase the quantity and quality of the OPT III clinic experience. As a result, the total number of patient encounters seen during the third year has increased for each of the last three graduating classes.
Table: Increases in patient encounters for each of the last three graduating classes
Graduating Class Increase in OPT III Patient Encounters from prior year
2017 8.6%
2018 14.8%
2019 6.6%

OptoMETRICS

The addition of the Vision Therapy rotation as an OPT III curricular requirement has not only increased our ability to care for the growing VT needs of our patients, it has contributed greatly to an increase in educational encounters for our interns. Over the last three years, the total number of OPT III patient encounters has grown by 19.7%.
