Mechanics of Building

Building in a learning management system

Whether you use Canvas or not, building a branching activity within a learning management system (LMS) will be likely be pretty similar. It really is as simple as just building out a collection of pages and linking them together!

Here’s what a full page structure could look like (Canvas):

And here’s an example of how you may link your pages together (Canvas):

Keep in mind that good planning will make building easy. If you plan to think about your branching structure or create certain pathways/pages as you build, things could get confusing and you could lose track of exactly how you are linking everything together.

Note: If you are an Ohio State faculty/staff member, you can reach out to Ross Tamburro for Carmen-specific resources that will take you through the build process in more detail.

Building in a third party tool

Building a branching activity in a third party tool will differ based on your tool of choice, but the basic principles of building within an LMS will likely still apply.

One tool is Twine, which is a cloud-based option that is designed to make it easy to build branching activities. It can be used to plan or build a branching activity. There are plenty of other tools, some of which much more complex, that would allow you to do different things with branching, but we’ll let you poke around from here.
