Introduction and ways to engage

On this page, we will answer the following:

  1. What are branching activities?
  2. Why would we use them?
  3. When would we use them?

What are branching activities?

  • Choose-your-own adventure flowchart of choices based on decision making.
  • One single starting point/decision that branches down into different pathways, eventually leading to a number of ending points.

Why would we use branching activities?

  • Bring more interactivity into an online course
  • Transform a passive learning activity into a rich, active learning experience.
  • Students are immediately able to reinforce and apply information they just learned.
  • Can lead students to learning activities/resources specific to them.

When would we use branching activities?

  1. Scenario/decision-based activities
    1. Nursing simulations
    2. Interview simulations
  2. Pathways to student-specific resources/activities
    1. Asking students prior knowledge to point them towards specific resources
    2. Asking students to participate in certain discussions, activities or assignments based on choices
  3. Reinforce concepts with optional branching activities that can be revisited
