Role Model Event: Melisa Diaz

03/06/2018

Melisa Diaz visited Westland high school to discuss how fieldwork is an important component of research for many scientists. Developing field-driven research as an underrepresented specialty and is often very challenging, though worth the hard work! Melisa Diaz shared with students, “As a low-income, female, Hispanic student, many of these challenges were compounded for me with both internal and external pressures.” She explained why she chose a career in research, as opposed to law or medicine, which are what her family expected her to pursue. She explained the challenges (environmental and financial) she faced, but despite the obstacles, it was the best choice for her. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the students!

CCHI Practice Cohort 1

As our Cohort 1 begins their last semester of IMPACT, they are preparing for their CCHI examination! Students met at Westland High School after a long day of class to take a practice examination for their official test date after their high school graduations. Students scored between 20-80% on their first attempts, and designed a practice schedule with OSU administrators. Students will continue to prepare in the weeks to come, and OSU will be facilitating practice examinations prior to their scheduled test dates.

Role Model Event: Gabriel Zeballos Castellon

Mr. Zeballos Castellon started off our 2018 Role Model events by sharing a geologist’s perspective about what it means to be Latino. In his presentation, Mr. Zeballos Castellon explored the difference of perspective between what students saw and felt in their sometimes strange environments, and how to turn that into curiosity and exploration. The students very much enjoyed Mr. Zeballos Castellon’s presentation about how our landscapes shape our identity, and how our home and its surroundings impact how we are and how we act. Thank you for visiting out students!
