Q: What is a superfund site?

a: A nationally contaminated site that contains dumping of hazardous waste which is not properly managed.

Q: What toxins were released?

a: Heavy metals which mostly consisted of lead, zinc, and arsenic.

Q: Is the site safe now?

a: No, the site still contains some dangerous mineral. In addition, the site still remains on the National Priorities List, and construction for reuse and redevelopment has not been completed. There are still more clean up and safety precautions that need to take place.

Q: What is the current situation of the site?

a: There are still four major area within the site that contains contaminates that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is still currently cleaning up. Each site has its own unique situation on how clean up is being conducted due to the different environmental problem each area causes. The Argo Tunnel and the Argo Mill, however, is open for guided tours.

Q: Are superfund sites common?

a: Yes, there are about 1,875 superfund sites and counting in the United States and United States territories, with some sites being more minute compared to others.
