Service Engagement

In my first semester I joined Students Supporting People with Down Syndrome (SSPDS), and it has been a great experience so far. We haven’t been able to have any in-person events with the Self Advocates, but I’ve been able to participate in the virtual Buddy Walk which brings awareness and raises money for individuals with Down Syndrome. We were also able to take part in other virtual events such as a meet and greet to get to know the Self-Advocates, a cooking class, and a craft night. I can’t wait to continue to be involved in this amazing club in my future at Ohio State, and hopefully I’ll eventually be able to take on a leadership role within SSPDS.

In-person service was difficult during COVID-19 restrictions; however, I did have the opportunity to volunteer at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. I’ve never worked at a food pantry before, but I learned how to fill baskets of food for families, make go-bags for people who didn’t have a vehicle but still required food pantry services, and I had a really humbling experience overall. When restrictions are raised and I have a means of transportation, I would love to continue to volunteer my time at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
