Interview

I interviewed a friend’s uncle who works at Riverside Methodist Hospital as he is a head of the Neuroscience Center in Intervention Radiology. I asked him mostly about what his physician assistants and nurse practitioners contributed to his work and how he feels with his life dedicated to medicine as a physician. He spoke of how involved his life is with the procedures he does to alleviate stroke damage, and how he has missed a variety of family holidays while being on call in case an emergency did occur. He also detailed how his job would be impossible if it weren’t for the staff that supports him, and how is PA’s run everything that is behind the scenes and help him carry out his procedures smoothly. He explained how they all leave right around 5 PM and many have young families. He indicated they really have a balance between medicine and life, which is genuinely what I am looking for. Overall, it was great to here from someone who has been in the field for so long, as well as someone who has seen the rise of PA’s and their function. He knows how the field has changed because of them and he had great insight into the differences between a physician and the assistant. This all reaffirmed my decision to switch from pre-med to pre-PA, and gave me effective insight into the inner workings of it all.

Sophomore Service

I spent my semester volunteering for College Mentors for Kids, meeting with West Franklin Elementary once a week for 2 hours to spend time with my “little buddy” working on activities to promote higher education, community service, and cultural diversity. This service was wonderful as it allowed me to work closely with children as their role model and someone they can confide in – something I am very passionate about. I am all about exposure and demonstrating to kids what they’re capable of, and this program was such a perfect way to become intertwined in such an experience. I am continuing on with service into my junior year, this time as a General Manager, so that I may effectively continue to impact those who will become our future.
