Differential Diagnoses

Differential Diagnosis I

Uncontrolled Diabetes

Rationale:

Patient has a history of diabetes and came in for a follow-up. Headaches are a common symptom of high blood glucose. It could signal that blood sugar is out of its target range. Headaches are attributed to underlying health conditions or medical problems. Diabetes is one cause of secondary headaches ( McCance & Huether, 2019). This was ruled out since there was a decrease in E.A’s A1c level when compared to the previous data. E.A also denied any increase in thirst or changes in urination.

Differential Diagnosis II

Stroke

Rationale:

E.A presented with constant generalized headache with no relief. Patient’s blood pressure is high and he also has a family history of hypertension and diabetes in his dad and mom, respectively. Because strokes are common in those with diabetes and hypertension a FAST test was done, which was negative. Several manifestations of stroke include headache, tingling and numbness sensations ( McCance & Huether, 2019 ). Though E.A is at a higher risk for developing a stroke, this diagnosis was refuted since E.A’s FAST test was negative.

Differential Diagnosis III

Flu

Rationale:

Influenza, also known as “the flu” is an infectious disease of the respiratory tract. It is caused by the influenza virus. Some of the symptoms of flu are fever, cough, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, body ache and headache. The flu season can vary, but it is common between the months of October and May peaking between December and February. E.A presents during the flu season. Patient exhibits headache, fatigue and general malaise which are some of the clinical manifestations of Influenza (McCance & Huether, 2019). Could be the prodromal stages of the flu.  E.A complains of fatigue, muscle ache and headache which can all be due to the early stages of Influenza. However, the flu was ruled out because E.A was afebrile, denies any cough, sore throat, or nasal congestion and flu swab results was negative as well.
