G.O.A.L.S Reflection

I am very lucky to be able to attend OSU, and two people that I can’t thank enough for giving me such an opportunity are my parents. Since I was born, my parents have been trying to move to the United States or Canada from Ukraine in order to give me and my brother many possibilities. I have learned a lot about different cultures, and how they differ from what I was so used to. Coming to the US helped me realize how underappreciated diversity is in some of the countries. Knowing that many countries are not getting developed as fast because they don’t want to acknowledge other cultures and ideas or have gender discrimination made me realize how much our humanity is missing out on. I believe that diversity is what is supposed to help us solve many issues in the future, because it helps us look at a problem from many different perspectives and find the best solution. There are many difficulties that Third World countries face that we don’t know about, because we consider First World countries to “better”. Addressing this issue and trying to improve it is my professional goal. I have seen so many bright children in Ukraine that never got an opportunity to demonstrate and develop their possibilities. Helping them to get a chance would benefit not only them, but our world in general.

Another facet that I consider to be crucial in furthering my success is a Leadership Development. It is a tool that will help me with research projects. In order to start a project, one needs to be able to have a leadership abilities. It is important to know how to start a research, organize everything, manage time, find people if needed, etc. Because I want to get a PhD in math, I will need to do a research, and, therefore, would need to learn how to do all of the things listed above. Leadership Development would also help me with my Global Awareness goal. I have to be confident and committed. To improve my leadership skills I started an organization called Game of Thrones club. Being responsible for various activities, fundraisers, registration forms, etc. helped me learn how to arrange and coordinate the meetings and events. It also helped me work more on my time management in order to be able to be prepared for both, classes and different activities.

Even though I chose Global Awareness and Leadership Development to talk about, other facets are as important for me. However, I realized that my actions are directed towards something I want to accomplish and am passionate about rather than a specific category of G.O.A.L.S. I choose an action, not a letter from the abbreviation. My final goal is not going to change based on what facet I choose, because the result is what matters the most. The fact that I know that G stands for a Global awareness is not going to make me accomplish more. My effort, however, might. Therefore, I will continue trying to do my best in order to become successful and accomplished.

Artifact #2

It was important for me to get a job on campus in order to start saving money and get ready for adulthood. Ever since I got my first job sophomore year of high school, I started to hate asking my parents for money. They were already doing so much for me, and spending their money for something that I want, and not necessarily need, would make me feel spoiled. Therefore, this summer I applied for an Office Assistant position in the Math Advising Office. Few days after my interview, I received the job, and it made me feel extremely accomplished. It was a good way of starting to make some connections in the math department. After working there for few months, I realized how much I enjoy working in this office. I gained so much knowledge about the undergraduate program in math as well as other majors. Also, I have learned how to be more responsible and how to set personal goals when it comes to big projects at work. Getting this job helped me improve my resume, because it shows that besides being able to make sandwiches and look after kids, I can also work with big data and can be trusted to work on a big project. Now, I feel more confident in my abilities and more encouraged to apply for internships and undergraduate research position. Having some experience will give me a privilege over students who never got a practical knowledge.

Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

Hi! My name is Kat Husar, and I am a first year STEM EE Scholar at The Ohio State University. This eportfolio is going to be used to help me demonstrate my personal strengths and accomplishments. I will use it when applying for a job to show my professional and academic interests. This eportfolio is a great way of keeping track of participation in evens and programs that matter to me.

At the beginning of this school year, after the Involvement Fair, I felt so overwhelmed by all of the clubs offered at OSU. There were so many student organizations for academic, social, and spiritual purposes, but I was not sure which one I was actually feeling passionate about. I wanted to find something special that I would enjoy going to at any point of time. Being a math major felt exciting, but I did not want to forget about my other interests. So I decided to start my own student organization – Game of Thrones Club. It felt scary and unrealistic at first, because I wasn’t sure if anyone is going to take me seriously. However, I did not want to give up before I even stated, so I gave it a try. I submitted a proposal and went to a meeting hoping that this student organization is going to be approved. And it was! Knowing that the voice of first year student is actually being heard made me feel important.

But how is the Game of Thrones club is going to help me in the future? Even though it has nothing to do with academics or service work, it is going to be very helpful in the future. It helped me become more self-motivated. I think this is a great quality, because once I get a job, I need to be able to create projects myself and push myself to the limits rather than wait until someone assigns me work. Also, being a president of the student organization is a great way to learn how to manage time and develop leadership qualities. I am excited to see what the future holds for this club, and I really hope that students will become involved in it.

About Me

My name is Kat Husar and I am a first year student at The Ohio State University. I was born in Lviv, Ukraine, where I attended a Mathematics and Physics School. At the age of fourteen, my family and I moved to Brooklyn, New York. After ten months, we moved to Hilliard, Ohio. I attended Hilliard Bradley High School for three years, and I was involved in National Honor Society, math club, marching band, and winter guard. I was a TA in the AP Calculus AB class my junior and senior years. From that experience I decided to become a math major. I attended a class for future educators that allowed me to observe teachers in many different classroom setting, such as elementary school, middle school, high school, and special ed classrooms. This class also helped me get a job at Avery Elementary School Child Care Program as a High School Assistant. Working with students of various ages helped me realize that i want to minor in education and help people gain knowledge.

Currently I am a STEM EE Scholar at OSU. I hold a position of Office Assistant at math advising office. I am also working on starting a new student organization that will help students interested in Game of Thrones become involved on campus. My goal for this semester is to explore different tracks in math field and find the one that works best form me. I also want to help our community through service outreach programs.
