This is a photo of me over the summer in 2015. I am sitting on the ground surrounded by the nineteen other members from my Baltimore cohort and the twenty Israeli’s we became close with over junior year. During my junior and senior years of high school I participated in a program called Diller. This national Jewish leadership program is designed to strengthen Jewish identity, while connecting Jews in the diaspora with those who live in Israel. Being a member of Diller gave me the opportunity to improve my leadership skills as I built upon friendships with those who grew up differently than me.

About Me

My name is Hallie Hurwitz and I am from Baltimore, Maryland. I am the middle child with one older sister, who goes to Michigan, and a brother in high school. Before college, I played on my school basketball team and danced outside of school. I loved being active and involving myself in anything I could to meet and experience as much as possible. In school, I was involved with student government for three years, volunteered in a community service program called TOGA, was a school representative for AIPAC, and tutored underclassman through NHS. Outside of school, I joined a teen giving initiative and Diller, which connects Jewish leaders in the diaspora with Jews in Israel. I hope I can continue my presence at AIPACs’ policy conference as a Ohio States’ representative this spring. In addition, while in college I wish to gain the ability to help more people in my new community of Columbus. Currently, my major is speech and hearing, but I also aspire to add either psychology or childhood education as another major or miner. Ohio State has the ability to make my next four years the best time of my life, and I cannot wait experience it.

This is an image of me at my graduation from Beth Tfiloh High School. I chose this picture because getting to my graduation was not as easy as one may imagine. When I was six, I was diagnosed with dyslexia; to me, read and writing comes as a challenge. The year after I found out why reading the ABCs was more difficult to me, I changed to a specialized school. Jemicy, a lower-middle school that helps children with dyslexia learn how to, in simple terms, make my brain understand, was the best decision my parents made for me. All through Jemicy, I was surrounded by other children with dyslexia and teachers who were there to help us as much as they could. After eighth grade, I main streamed, leaving my attention oriented school for a larger, more stand off student and faculty body. Even after going to Jemicy for eight years and learning all different tricks to help me understand what comes more naturally to others, high school was challenging. I had to learn how to advocate for myself since my teachers were not always as helpful as I needed. I learned how to explain in a simplistic fashion that I am dyslexic and would benefit from a different approach. With this, I also practiced being patient when teachers who did not understand that I would not “grow out” of being dyslexic nor will reading come easily. When I was younger, I vividly remember sitting at a table being laughed because I was unable to read the Ketch-up bottle.  Looking back I can use these experiences to help me with challenges adjusting to college. I now also have a more empathetic outlook to those with learning disabilities.
